    • @falcon664
      @falcon664 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@jackstoffels5045 The Marlin was based on the Classic platform, too big for a pony car. The show car Tarpon, on which the Marlin was based, was on the American platform. The Tarpon had much better proportions and may have been more successful. But at that time, the American was limited to 6 cylinder engines only. The 65 Marlin was marketed more as a personal luxury car, was loaded with standard equipment. The Tarpon design was ruined in the transition to the larger platform and by the requirement for more headroom in the rear.

      @@sherw7635 I live in Michigan and used to live in the Metro Detroit area. I had a friend from High school who landed a job working for Chrysler in the engine dyno test area in the early 1970s he had a 1970 Cuda in jet black with a 426 Hemi. Chrysler was starting to get out of high performance just after the 1973 fuel embargo and they were literally tossing out their experimental Hemi performance parts which he picked up and put on his car. Literally when he nailed the gas you could not lean forward in the seat! That was the most impressive car I ever rode in. I bought a 2019 Hemi R/T Challenger to remind me of those days.

      @@robc8468 If the MC era had continued - next-Gen performance was in development by all. Like Pontiac’s RamAir V experimental hemi - the dark period of performance lasted until 1982 when the Mustang GT returned- the core problem of low technology made everything low-performance until the mid-80s when turbocharging began to show light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel - from Chrysler, Buick, Mustang.
      All it took to turn my Omni GLH into a fire-breather was a steel-head gasket to strengthen that weak-spot and a lot more boost by tricking the computer. The manufacturers took years to do what took us a few hours - they had to be very cautious or people would have been blowing their engines. Boost without knock sensors & higher octane have bad results - but it was clear that the performance draught was ending.

      The 1st Generation Barracuda WAS a lazy effort, with front fenders and grille interchangeable with a Valiant. It was heavier than the Valiant with that massive rear window, and actually slower than the Valiant if both were equipped with the 273 Commando engine. However the 1967 MY was a completely different car with unique sheetmetal, available in a notchback, fastback, and convertible. I think if this design had appeared in '64 it would have been a huge success. The 273 V8 "LA" (mopar small block) was an OK engine but not really competitive with the Chevy 327. In 1968 this was fixed by boring and stroking the 273 to 340 CI with huge improvements in the cylinder heads and a bigger camshaft. The 340 would easily rev to 6000 RPM and was underrated at 275 gross HP. Numerous people have dyno'd stock 340s with power production of 315-325 HP. I owned a '68 Notchback Barracuda with a 340, 4-speed, 3.55 sure-grip (I.e. limited slip) rear axle, and the Formula S package with disk brakes and fast-ratio steering. This was a truly great car that did everything well. In 1970 it evolved into the E-body 'Cuda that had a wide enough engine compartment to accept the 426 hemi. However the car gained a lot of weight, and I think in retrospect that the '68-69 340 Barracudas (the 'Cuda name first appeared in '69) were better overall cars. The 383 big block engine was also available in the '67-69 cars but was a tight fit and initially was not available with power steering. The exhaust system was quite restrictive and the 383's in these cars made only 280-300 HP, as opposed to the same engine in the Road Runners with 335 HP. In mid '69 a few 'Cudas were built with the 440 Super Commando GTX engine. These were really over-the-top and wih all that weight in the front end, no PS or PB (wouldn't fit), and automatic transmission only; they reportedly were difficult to drive at low speeds and murder to parallel park!
      For all that the big block cars were only marginally quicker than the 340 cars in stock tune and really needed a set of fenderwell headers to let the bigger engines breathe. Unfortunately the fenderwell headers had very tight ground clearance and their installation required cutting away a significant part of the inner fenders, which reduced the stiffness of the front end and exacerbated the nose-heavy poor handling of the big block cars.
      I balanced and blueprinted the 340 in my Barracuda and installed forged pistons with a true 10.3:1 compression ratio, a Chrysler "Purple Shaft" hemi grind cam, ported the heads, and installed an Edelbrock LD 340 intake with a Holley 750 carb (all per the factory racing manual) and recurved distributor. With this combination I lost a little low end torque, but the engine would rev to 6800 RPM in an instant and the car was a true big block killer, showing its taillights to many a GTO or SS 396 Chevy (and 440 Magnum Chargers!). It was an even better car than with the stock engine; mild enough to daily drive and with a quick carb change (I kept the alternate carb in the trunk and could change it in 10 minutes) back to the original Carter AVS would get 20-21 MPG on the highway. I have owned lots of different cars from the ponycar/musclecar era and overall this one was one of the best, and I have very fond memories of it.

      I remember the gas crisis and emission controls. Not to mention the idiotic enormous bumpers! Still haven't figured out what was so "safe" about them. I'm still bitter about what they did to our cars. Had a 1967 Camero SS when they first were introduced. 4-speed. Took off like a rocket. Rubber going into 2nd and a tweak into third. Mine had "heavy duty" brakes and suspension so it could corner pretty good and stop too. Loved that car. Then got married and had a kid, so had to trade it in for a big Caprice.

    Oh, and if some young dude still wanted more choices back in 64 your forgetting a big one Pontiac GTO!.

    • @AtomicReverend
      @AtomicReverend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      GTO although really cool was a Mid size car not a pony car, It competed with the Fairlane, Chevelle, Marlin, Belvedere (1965 a year late) and the Coronet (also 1965).
      What makes a pony car is it is based on the really light weight compact car chassis The Plymouth Barracuda really was the only real competitor to the Mustang just as he said in the video they (Plymouth) just misadvertised it but it checked all the boxes,
      the "commando" 273 V8 made about 300 horsepower in 1964 and just like the Mustang you could also get a weaker V8 or a couple of different 6 cylinders and it was based on the Valiant compact just like Mustang was actually a Falcon. Big difference was the Mustang didn't look anything like the mundane falcon and you could get it in a convertible coupe or fastback, the Barracuda came in a fastback only if you wanted a convertible or a coupe you had to buy a Valiant Signet which was a nice car but kind of boring looking by comparison.
      Don't quote me on this but I believe Chrysler corporation was almost bankrupt because of their screw up on full size cars in 63 making them smaller (and ulgy) so they just modified an existing Valiant to look really cool instead of retooling for a different car completely.
      Personally I think the Barracuda is a cooler looking car (especially when it is on Americans [mag wheels] and is stanced on big and littles) but almost everyone else thinks the Mustang is cooler. In 1966 AMC trying to get in on the new pony car segment made the Rambler Rebel (cool pony car but only sold as a coupe and it looked to much like the AMC American) and In 1967 pony car war was in full swing but the Camaro came out only in a coupe or 'vert, the Barracuda became its own car but neither of them offered a fastback and I can't lie a 67 Mustang fastback is killer looking compared to a Camaro or Barracuda regardless of performance numbers especially in a fastback. GM Chrysler and AMC were all asleep in the mid-1960s and it was like 1969 or 70 before they caught on.

      @AtomicReverend 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did forget to mention the cougar (I actually have had an XR7 years ago) and the firebird but they both came out in 67 also and were definitely pony cars. And I think the javelin might be considered a pony car although it might be a midsize like a Chevelle I am not sure. AMC always took a slightly different path than Detroit making sure to get that niche market sell. Occasionally it would pay off for them and sometimes they would really screw up
      The AMX, AMC claimed was a competitor to a Corvette but I couldn't imagine too many people that were in the market for a plastic vette buying a AMX bit its prics was way to high for a pony car regardless even though it is the coolest of cool rides that are almost forgotten about.

Second you metioned the Rebel from American Motors it came out as a top of the line 1966 Rambler classic and was AMCS entry into the mid sized car ranks for 67. A couple of things missing from this video. For starters, the AMC Javelin was also a pony car. Also (and while not wanting to make the video uncomfortably long is understandable), the Plymouth Barracuda actually evolved. In 1967, it (along with the Valiant) was redesigned, and the Barracuda received body-specific sheetmetal, presumably as an attempt to be more competitive with the Ford Mustang, and in 1970 (with the introduction of the Dodge Challenger) the Barracuda became the 'Cuda. Speaking of the Dodge Challenger, I've heard that many people would consider the Challenger more comparable to the Mercury Cougar and Pontiac Firebird, while the Plymouth 'Cuda was actually the Chrysler equivalent to the Ford Mustang and Chevy Camaro. The Wikipedia article for Dodge Challenger even mentions the first gen Challenger as being a competitor to the Cougar and Firebird.

    Mustang has evolved into a huge, expensive car. My father (a Chrysler exec) had two Barracuda's, both of which my brother rapped around trees. Chrysler got tired of replacing company cars and probably my father as he left in 1969. He bought a Camaro in 1978, which he eventually gave to me. Nice except that it became a rust bucket and was taken out with a hail storm.

Of course, as I was only 12 at the time, I didn't get to drive it,(which was disappointing. I was wondering... this one was a 289, but wasn't the standard V8 in 64 1/2 a 260? I believe so, but icbr... I also dug the AMX, which, as a concept car, sported a rumble seat, a 20's throwback, but Uncle Sam wouldn't allow it, citing safety concerns.. Therefore, it was the only 2 seater pony car. But it was lighter, with a respectable horsepower to weight. ratio...

My mom rode around in one when she was a teenager, and as she was born in 1914 , she woulda been 16 in July 1930..So yeah, it woulda been the 20's for rumble seats (whatever that's got to do with pony cars, apart from the AMX concept)...

    GM chickening out on the Corvair in favor of the Camaro, right when the Corvair was showing its potential as a first-class driver's car, had to be one of the worst moves ever. The sport sedan market started taking off in 1968-69, with BMW leading the way and the humble Datsun 510 caught in the updraft as "the poor man's Beemer." GM could have had a piece of that action. As it was, the Z-28s and Trans Ams became joke material while GM could have been in the sector that bred the Audi Fox and the Subaru WRX.

    Excellent, informative, and spot on video as always. One bit of information is I thought I saw somewhere that the first time Ford introduced the mustang was in the TV show Hazel, no hype just showed her arriving home in a white/blue 64 1/2 mustang. Seems like Ford might have been a little apprehensive about hype after the Edsel, keeping it low key.. Which reminds me one suggestion maybe a lot of viewers of your excellent videos might share is to do a show on product placement of cars in TV shows mainly from the late 50s on. Always loved seeing new cars promoted on TV shows. Examples being Ward cleaver driving ford's/Plymouths, the Andy Griffith police ford's showing a new one every year, the Studebaker's on Mr Ed, a couple episodes even had an Avanti in it, and the Pontiacs always used in My 3 sons/I dream of Jeannie, showing major nelson in other Pontiacs and eventually the new firebird. And if you haven't seen this already look up the Video of the cast of bewitched/bonanza driving new 1965 Chevrolets down the set of bonanza. There are many more of these placement cars on other shows as well. Of course, and this was a good move, the higher the job title on every show the nicer ride they drove. IMHO would make a great subject for a future video.

    I dont remember James Bond actually driving a mustang until the 1971 body style (where he drove it on 2 wheels in Viva las vegas) but he did have an early production model (I believe even before their public release) in one of his movies where he cut the side open and flattened a tire with the extending spinner of his Austen Martin.

    The Mustang is similar to E type Jag they sold well at the start yet over time lost sales, The E type was replaced by the XJS. The Mustang like XJS got load of luxury items which with the emissions test, made them heaver, slower and more expensive. Which ruined the spirit of the cheap basic sport car.

    The word Camaro does not appear in standard French dictionaries as it is an old word from the French Languedoc regional dialect meaning literally " Companion for the road". The German word "Weggefährter" or the Dutch "metgezel" would be close translations, there being so single word in English.

    Good video like all the others but, you forgot to include that insurance premiums and safety standards also killed the muscle car era; not as much as emissions and the oil crisis but still a factor. I note that this is adequately covered in Episode 6, but hey, I'm watching this in sequence! Lastly, at 11:09, some examples (photos) of how the pony cars grew in size would have been great to end with!

    I love your videos, Edward, but I think that your dismissal of the Plymouth Barracuda was unfair. True, it didn't sell as well as the Mustang, but it was first. It shouldn't be disparaged because it was derived from the Valliant. The first-generation Mustang, after all, was derived from the Falcon. Design-wise, many of us think that the Barracuda, with its stunningly beautiful rear glass, did a fastback much better than the Mustang. The Dodge Charger was indeed late to the party, but it now outsells both Mustang and Camaro! Furthermore, Stellantis is rumored to revive a Barracuda soon.

I loved 'em, but definitely not a family friendly car by any stretch of imagination.
