Genre analysis is a way of examining a type or style of writing in order to better understand the conventions, expectations, purpose, and target audience for that genre.
Genre, as you might guess from the way it sounds, comes straight from French, a language based on Latin. It's closely related to genus, a word you may have encountered in biology class.
Genres also provide the writer with general organizational patterns that can help them arrange what they say and when they say it. For readers, genres help organize information so that they can more easily make sense of what they are about to read.
a category of artistic, musical, or literary composition characterized by a particular style, form, or content.
genre analysis involves picking apart and noting the various features of a particular text in order to figure out what they mean (i.e., why they are significant) for the people who use that genre.Genre refers to categories of texts that share the same features: they are organised and worded in a similar way for the same audience and with the same purpose. Poems, news articles and lab reports are all different genres of writing. Genres are not limited to written texts.
A corpus analysis shows specific stages in the genre: Descriptive stages (in turn, Subject Matter, Plot, Characters, and Background) and an obligatory Evaluation stage. Each stage is described in detail, in particular its characteristics and placement in the texts. The genre-based corpora and corpus analysis can help obtain sufficiently valid information about the linguistic features of the texts and how texts with such features are processed by test-takers. Using that information, one may be able to manipulate the processing/performance demands on the text/task.This dissertation is an analytical approach that seeks to unravel the writing conventions in the concluding chapter of thirty Master dissertations
