Back in the 1990.s, when this song was big on MTV, girls asked me for translation from english to serbian. And...They "stayed with me". ❤ So, i have really good teenager's memorys on this song.😏 Anyway, i love your reaction and hello from Serbia 🇷🇸!💓💓💓
This is such an amazing song. It spent eight weeks at the top of the UK charts from February to April 1992 and was also number 1 in Ireland and a top 5 hit in at least a dozen other countries including the USA. I always like to see reactions to the moment Siobhan Fahey enters as the Devil or Death! Her vocals may not be as impressive as Marcella Detroit's but are still good, and her personality oozes character. She has a great and varied history from the girl group Bananarama and her own projects, including from working with Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame) who co-wrote this with them, and who she was married to around this time. Sadly, the duo of Fahey and Detroit split acrimoniously not long after this hit and didn't speak for years, but they made up in 2018 and have performed and recorded again together since.
Hi Polo, thank you so much for playing my request. I thought you might like the video as well as the song, as it's a bit quirky. The two ladies in the video are Siobhan Fahey (ex-singer from the girl group Bananarama) and Marcella Detroit. Siobhan is Irish and Marcella is American. This Song was released in 1992. Apparently, Siobhan Fahey (the lady who comes on later in the video) drank a bottle of Vodka whilst waiting to come on and sing her part. I guess that partly explains her "manic" expressions! Loved your reaction, thumbs up from me and thanks again.
Well back then females (and males) had talent and there was an industry, though it was waning considerably by 1992, now it's just a black hole and cesspit of shite for pointless slaves to the mass-produced garbage spewing out of corporate factories instead of where talent should come from.
If memory serves me, they had another really good song called "Hello (turn your Radio on)". Thank you very much, I always enjoy your reactions and thoughts. Have a great day!
No, they had loads of good and great ones from their debut album BEFORE 'Stay' and the follow-ups were done. 'Goodbye Cruel World' the ignored 1st single from album 2 is especially good. 'Hello' is simply another class one and there was more to come, on the album, as B-sides and ongoing albums, even though Marcella "had to leave", though they are now back together finally.
It's a great additional wit in a great video for a song that's all been lacking wholeheartedly in the long dead industry. That's the 80s dying for you and the ongoing horror of slagdonna, S/A/W, c/rap and everything rotten happening ever since.
"Common People" from Pulp is another 90's gem that many people in the States may not be familiar with. Definitely worth a reaction. I highly recommend the full length album version and not the shortened, censored, music video... though the video is definitely cheesy.
Oh this was fun. I loved that you paused it (unknowingly) just before the serious weirdness kicks in and said, "Well, the video's kind of weird" and I was laughing, thinking, "Oh, just wait..." LOL! Say, if you ever want to hear a bright, beautiful 80s hit that's kind of a One Hit Wonder, check out Steve Forbert "Romeo's Tune." The piano is gorgeous, his voice is kind of weird and smokey, and it's my favorite song of all time (Well, tied with Manfred Mann's "For You."
This is such a beautiful song, and a surprise for everyone who sees the video for the first time, when death comes in. It has that 90's cheese layer that doesn't diminish the beauty or the power of the music, and everything combined makes for a music video that is hard to forget.
haha loved this song, the "weird" one was Siobhan a member of the girl group Banarama - and those women could drink haha (that was back in the 80s) 😂🎉🎶🇬🇧
Rounding the circle, Siabhan (Death) was married to Dave Stewart, who was part of the Pop Duo The Tourists, who became The Eurythmics. Annie Lenox (who you have Reacted to) was the other half of the Duo with Dave. Siabhan was part of Bananarama. And the guy on the table was boyfriend of one of the other members of Bananarama.
@@PacificJoe that's right. And Dave's collaboration with Terry Hall on "She" (with Charles Aznavour's cameo in video) had me in tears first time I saw it, with Terry's delivery. (Felt like one of those sad clown inputs in Operettas). Dave was far reaching at that time.
"Shakespeare In Love" (1998) is a romantic comedy starring Joseph Fiennes and Gwyneth Paltrow and won 7 Academy Awards including Best Picture, so is a must see if Polo hasn't yet seen it.
Siobhan Fahey She was from the girl group call Bananarama as a pop dance song and she out to be herself with Marcella Detroit who was work with Eric Clapton, Siobhan she open her as a duo with a huge different styled as before.
Siobhan Fahey (don't make me swear I'm spelling her name right) was definitely eccentric. This is the only song featuring (can't remember her first name) Detroit as lead singer. The band was originally just lady death there, trying to get away from her image as a singer in Bananarama. Useless facts inserted. I actually really liked this album.
Great reaction Polo!! I LOVED this song when it came out (and 1992 was the year, so good call! Yes - cheese was ALL over the videos - and we ate it all up!) The character of 'death' is Siobhan Fahey, an original founding member of the 80's group Bananarama - where you might have heard Cruel Summer, or their cover of Venus. Cheers!!
Loved this song back in 1992, love it just as much today. The band Ghost did a cover (featuring actor Patrick Wilson) for the soundtrack to the new Insidious movie. Great stuff!
Makes me sad, thinking of my "baby" brother who we lost end of January this year. He was bathed by his partner in his final days and hours. Also he loved this song and had the album.
for some reason this reminded me of a really great performance/song called 'fake monk' by hua chenyu. Its just him and a piano playing live, but he gets right into a character and puts the old shivers up the spine :)
Don't you dare, there's a million things from the 80s, and a few from the 90s to do before this thing even considered, even though it's by far his best one, not that that gets it far.
If you listen to the first few lines it seems to be about a suicide attempt - if this world is wearing thin, and your thinking of escape - (please seek help in your area if you're experiencing those feelings) and he's on a life support machine and death comes for him as he wanted to die and his love (life) and death fight over him to keep him in there 'world', and he's wakes choosing life...
At the time, it was crazy that Siobhan went from Bananarama to this. Incidentally, at the time, you could buy pre-mixed bananarama cocktails from the off-licence. They were great! 🤪🍸
They were a great group. Check out 'I don't care'.. and in thier 2019 reunion, they do a spoof song of this song. Soon after this song (stay) the band split up, but the girls got back together again for a reunion album in 2019.
The second one "a great performer" was famously extremely drunk, she'd been waiting around all day whilst the first lady did her takes and got bored and ended up with many a vodka but the director went with it and thank god he did, this music video wouldnt have half the impact without this performance, meant to be lol
Please watch the short documentary of shakespears sister take on their work of the music video 'stay' and what the video means. Very intresting, highlighting the characters and who they are... Aliens known as catwomen from the moon. Give it a watch
The year before i went to the army, girlfriends aplenty, puppy love, fighting, drinking, partying, freedom. Incredible time. I was waiting for life to start, and there i was in the prime of it.
Sorry if you've done it already, but take a look at "This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush. All of her stuff is great but that really tugs on the heart strings. It's written from the perspective of a man anxious about his partner giving birth. It's powerful storytelling, much like all of her stuff. Also do "Wuthering Heights". Also, "Running Up That Hill". God, just do Kate Bush 😅
Think it's to do with good Vs evil and love and trust me Manson is in a league of his own the girl with black hair walking down the stairs she really normal in real life and the girl with short back hair is a trained classic singer
If you're gonna go down a cool 90's female rabbit hole, please please please listen to "Heal it up" by Concrete Blonde! Johnette Napolitano is my favorite female voice of all time!
Siobhan (death) was in Bananarama ❤ Marcella, the lead on this, took part in an U.K. show Popstar to Opera Star. She’s incredible. It was the 90s. Videos are cheesy lol
It's actually a rather psychotic form of love that keeps you chained. "You can only think of me". I love the song, but since I've been with a narcissist my view changed
Except the woman that wants you to stay is scary controlling if you go back to the lyrics only. I feel Siobhain is really there to save that poor mf.😅 Hugs from Sweden.
I can never get sick of this song and watching folks reactions to it feeds my soul
The anticipation, knowing what’s coming in the song and getting to see someone experiencing it for the first time is 🤌🏼❤️🤌🏼
This song was HUGE in the UK in 1992. Number one for 8 weeks. It also won the Brit Award for Best video.
It was huge in the US as well.
@@TacomaGirl Well they have to get something right now and again, God knows its so little.
I love when the second vocalist comes in and you're like "oh, this is a whole movie now."
I was a high school boy when this came out and not afraid to say it still is one of my favorite tracks of that time.
came here to say the same ;)

Married to Dave Stewart.
The freaky deaky early 90s. Honestly, female singers had some bangers back in the day.
Well back then females (and males) had talent and there was an industry, though it was waning considerably by 1992, now it's just a black hole and cesspit of shite for pointless slaves to the mass-produced garbage spewing out of corporate factories instead of where talent should come from.
I can't express just how much Shakespears Sister helped me through my late teenage years. Please react to more of their music.
If memory serves me, they had another really good song called "Hello (turn your Radio on)".
Thank you very much, I always enjoy your reactions and thoughts. Have a great day!
Still have the CD, I’m gonna have to put it on the boombox. I bought the CD after my cassette melted.
@@jeanine6328I have it too. Hormonally Yours I believe it's called

The eye roll from Death was like “fine, you can have him…but I’ll still win in the end.”
It's a great additional wit in a great video for a song that's all been lacking wholeheartedly in the long dead industry. That's the 80s dying for you and the ongoing horror of slagdonna, S/A/W, c/rap and everything rotten happening ever since.
@@kyachdistent1301this was 1992
@@kaijuk I know that but they are an 80s act! My whole point. This kind of thing is not usual for something being of the 90s. Do be sure what I mean!
Showed the video to my 5 year old granddaughter. It was her favorite song for about 6 months. She liked the death's angel character.
Love this song and the performances are outstanding!
Ah, me as a little goth teen in the 90's singing about a love I hadn't experienced yet.
"Common People" from Pulp is another 90's gem that many people in the States may not be familiar with. Definitely worth a reaction. I highly recommend the full length album version and not the shortened, censored, music video... though the video is definitely cheesy.
Siobhan, who plays death, famously got pretty trashed waiting to film her part in this video. 😂
That's hilarious. The crotch thrust kills me every time.
Yup, she hit the Vodka. She credits it as producing her ',full deranged splendour', as she put it.😁
I first heard this song when I was like 12 years old. It always stuck with me and I revisit it every 5 or so years for the last 30 years.

My mum listened to this all the time when I was growing up 😂 always loved it
Saw Prince in Glasgow early 90s and they were the support 👍
This song has also been stuck in my head from when I first heard it …a random hit that sticks with you!
"You're History" & "I Don't Care" are also 🔥
This song means a lot to me. It’s extremely evocative and it touches me deeply.
Fun fact about this video is that Siobhan (who plays Death) was absolutely off her rocker to put it lightly after spending the day drinking Vodka
The second girl was quite drunk when she did this. There was so much waiting around she had a tipple or two😅😅😅
I am struggling to believe it, but marcella detroit was 40 years old in this video !
(She's 72 now)

First time I heard this was right now. Both excellent singers. This song is deep and bit creepy. Weird as that is, I really like it.
Wow, I remembered loving this song in the early 90s.
Never heard another peep from them.
There album Hormonally yours is one of my all time favourite it’s a must listen highly recommended 👍🏽
I was 19 when this released and I've always had a soft spot for it.
The guy who "orchestrated" this piece is the same guy who pioneered Annie Lenox (The Eurythmics). He could certainly put together some real bangers!
Siobhan fahey was drunk I believe in this video and was generally mad as a box of frogs.
You would love "Come Back and Stay" by Paul Young

Siobhan Fahey walking down those steps to that piano refrain as Death...honestly, it pisses on anything Manson has ever done. Easily.
Im assuming youve done Sinead O'connor Nothing Compares to you. It will blow your mind
The song was great. Wish i'd heard it without the video . The goofy video kind of killed it for me.
It took a few bottles of tequila for the vibe
It was vodka! 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
