I'm old enough to remember Gillette dumped on their entire male audience to pander to a group of people that are known not to even have basic hygiene, let alone shave (feminists)
i shaved with my current 10 times and i feel it can go 3 or 4 more recently came back to wet shaving, talk to my dad back at home about it and when i said to him guys today talk on the internet they shave 2-3 times and thow the blade away (gilette platinum) he replied : haaa i use a gillette platinum daily for around a month (25-30 times) that opened my eyes a bit
A colleague who worked at Gillette told me that the blades are coated in a film which prevents the blade from oxidation, after the first shave oxidation starts, so it’s a factor of time as well as the number of shaves. If you store the shaver in shaving oil you can get the blade to last longer, I tried and it seems to work
They are so dirt cheap and I let it grow for 2-3 days at a time usually so a pack of a 100 blades will last me like 1 1/2 - 2 years. Yeah that's a blade a shave for me
The highest number of shaves I ever got from one double-edge blade was over 25. By shave six the extra pull became noticeable, but powering through that - it didn't really have another drop-off point. So the brand I use has variations of blade quality even within the same package of (I don't know - do they come in packs of ten?). So first and foremost for that experiment was to only do it with a blade that was smooth on both edges out of the wrapper (not all of them are, and once in a while I can't really use either new edge without scraping my skin). That was back in the mid 20-teens. IIRC, those were Derby blades. I've been using Dorco for the last few years.
Good video👍 My experience: -low quality blades get 1 use, I don't buy them, if I have some low cutting blades I use them in shavettes -good quality blades produce 3 good shaves, with confort -maximum quality blades get 4 shaves (Feather, best Personna lots, Kai...) I always disinfect the blades and razor before each use. Irritations most of the time are caused by a not proper disinfection of blade and razor. My straight razors get stropped after each shave but they are completely different than a DE razor, different blade geometries and cutting action, a DE razor can still cut cleanly with a slightly consumed blade. Of course a professional barber must use always a new blade, for safety and maximum performance.
I always keep two active blades hung by a magnet. When I expect a big day or hot date, I blade bank the one with the most uses and open a new blade. Next day I have two blades to chose from, sharper or dullimg. I use more dull one for my legs, and sharper for more sensitive areas.
This is probably hard to believe but I safely get ten two pass shaves out of the Derby. They just work well for me even though many consider them inferior. I tried the Voskhod's and even though they are sharper to begin with, did not last as long.
I use ladas yellow stainless,I shave everyday I get 14 shave out of one blade I think preparation is key to longevity for me wash face rinse slightest of pre shave lather up let it sit on the face around 2 minutes re wet slightly bring lather back up ,like a knife through hot butter I know everyone is different but works for me.
Same, I have short hair and I shave quite often and I know the blades are cheap but I can't just blow through a bunch because I don't have much money so I have to put my money towards more important things in life.
Why not hey it's what work for you. Ive recently used a feather blade and it got less aggressive after a few uses. Im gonna try to get more uses out of blades, I think it's unnecessary to chuck so soon. But guess it may be a personal preference ..how tough your beard is and quality of the blades...
@Jeremo Brown youre paying way too much. I get 100 of mine for 7 or 8 bucks and get a few shaves from them before I notice any degradation in performance.
I have been told by several sources that on a Slant Razor, you should only use the blade for less uses than a normal razor. Based on this theory Con, would you use a blade on a slant razor less than three times?
I just use and discard blades after 4 shaves. And I mainly (alternately) use blades on the sharper end of the spectrum: Feather, Kai, Perma-Sharp, Gillette Silver Blue. The only moderately sharp blade I often use is the Astra (green) brand.
Too True. Feather blades tend to go off a little quicker than Astra SP's in my opinion I get 3 nice shaves out of a feather but can stretch an Astra to 4 3 pass shaves. Thing is , the feather is fantastic for all three uses where as Astra's are a bit rough on the first shave. I guess that line balls them for longevity in a sense but then again, Astra's are heaps cheaper.
Actually, sharpness and deterioration can be independent. A razor can be both sharp (i.e., thin) and last for a long time if the material is hard enough. I have a kitchen knife that I have been using for the past 36 years, and it's still sharp as day one, precisely because the material is hard, and I don't misuse it.
I used to do three per blade but I would always get a little burn on that third time. I think I'm going to drop it to two, life's too short and the blades are to cheap
There is a shaving reviewer on youtube that used a Feather blade over 50 times, putting little dots on the wrapper to keep a record of it. I don't see how that is possible , even if you have peach fuzz.
You should definitely get a sample pack! YMMV, but I can guarantee you there are much better blades for you out there, especially being that *Derby/Parker* are at the lower end of the scale. Never tried Bolzano but even if you’re trying to get the cheapest price point… Voshkod, Permasharp, Astra Green, Nacet etc. are all cheaper but, still a good range of balanced blades from comfortable to comfortable and sharp. I’m currently using Wizamet Super Iridium’s, Gillette Silver Blue, Voshkod and the occasional more expensive Feather or Kai (generally for the Feather AS-D2 razor) if it’s been more than 3 days growth. When starting out it helps balancing the DE blades you use with the aggressiveness of the DE razor you’re using that day. For example a mild razor like Merkur 34C or DE89 let’s you choose blade sharpness range between like a very comfortable smooth Voshkod blade, or the sharpest blades, which would be a Feather or Kai DE blade. That lets you get a feel for how (while all are razor sharp) different DE blades can yield such different results in the same razor and how you react and favor certain blades. Also, knowing how the coating put on sine DE blades from the factory can make it seem dull or tug on the first few strokes and then smooth out, but also knowing that it can make it that much more comfortable especially if you’re using an aggressive razor. It’s about finding the right razor/blade combination for you. All DE blades will cut… it’s finding the one that does it the best for you. While many wet shavers can generally agree on certain specifics on blades and general performance… there is always one person that is on the opposite end of the spectrum. *Bottom line* it’s trial and error and you’ll find as you gain experience and skill your blade/razor preferences will change. You might hate a blade that you loved or come back to a blade that you thought you hated and it could change because many times beginners form biased opinions and blame the equipment when it’s user error… we’ve all done it. Good luck on your shaving career

NavySturmGewehr Throw away de blade after each shave? It's only money. I have given blind shaving test to 20 people and none of them could differentiate shaving with a new blade vs a blade that has been used 300 times. The key is to clean the de blade after each shave. Many people don't bother to clean the de blade after each shave, and when the shave gel/cream dries up, it sticks to the de blade and makes the blade appear to be thicker and duller. Interesting, I must have very very soft facial hair. I shave about every other day and can get more than a month out of a blade. In fact I bought all of my wet shaving gear over a year ago with a 10 pack of Merkur platinum blades and I'm still on that original pack. I can tell a difference as I use one, in a few weeks I go from 2 passes to 4 to get everything smooth but that isn't a big problem for me. I don't get nicks or anything from them and a few times I've changed blades more or less because I felt guilty about it.
