Also the title of this album “Things fall apart” is the name of a book by a Nigerian author Chinua Echebe and is widely regarded as the paramount of English language African literature. A must read.
I found that book lying on the street in New York on my way to work one day and I read it. At the time I didn't know the title was from the book but immediately made the connection when I picked the book up from off the curb.😊What a lucky find.
I would love for y’all to dig more into Erykah badu,Jill Scott and lauryn hill! Won’t be disappointed! These ladies are incredible and so is their body of work
Funny thing about Bobby Caldwell, his first album covers, and many of them in general, never had a picture of him; and i heard it was because many folks thought he was black and people were loving his music so he didn't want to "come out" as white and possibly lose a bunch of fans/support/sales so he didn't lie or anything, but just didn't blatantly put his face or race on the album.
There’s 2 versions of this actually one with Jill Scott and one with Erykah singing the hook. The Roots along with Jill are all from Philly making this even more special. I love both of them.
Your dad is a great example how people that usually would not listen to Hip Hop actually can appreciate it. If people would just be open for it and listen to the actually art form, instead of a prejudiced POV. I grew up with Hip Hop since late 80's. Peace and respect to you for going back to the best days Hip Hop has ever known !
Yes, thank you for this. The idea that all rap is the same is so offensive to me. And just because there are offensive words doesn't mean that the song is bad. Thanks again.
As an adult with a young kid, I hope my relationship with my kid is as good as yours is. I love that you both want to learn more about each other through music. Thank you.
The Roots are the band for Jimmy Fallon's late night talk show. Also Scott Storch who is a legendary producer started off playing keyboard for The Roots!
Gotta do Erykah Badu NOW lol her discography has soooooo many classics. Bag lady, on and on, window seat, apple tree, another lifetime, Tyrone, didn’t cha know etc.
Dude I’m hooked on your channel.! To bring new music to someone and to watch them digest it all, is intoxicating! I love his openness and the way he absorbs it. Good work!!
The drumming at the end of the song is a similar pattern to what would more typically be found in the UK genre of drum and bass. Not only did moving to London help The Roots' fanbase grow, but also the diversity of their sound. OutKast used a similar drum pattern on 'Bombs Over Baghdad' a few years later.
Scott Storch joined the band in 1995 and although he had left the group by 1999 he produced this track and played the keys. This is their 4th album, their first with MCA, after Do You Want More? and Illadelph Halflife on Geffen Records, both of which saw moderate success. Malik B has a solo song on the album, he was with the band from 1992 to 2001. He recently passed away, may he rest in peace.
As a reprise, it would be awesome to see your Dad hear the live version of this song, from their album Come Alive, which really showcases them as a real band, and features Jill Scott, who originally wrote the hook.

I have to say that 90's R&B and Hip-Hop literally kept me out of trouble. I would sit in my room for hours listening to music. Every paycheck went to a music store! The 90's is and will always be my favorite decade because of the music! I wish my mom was this open but this genre of music is not her thing, she's all gospel so just imagine how much I got yelled at for the music I listened to! 🤣😅 It's all God and I respect her for it but she never kept me away from the music I love! Dude, I love your channel. You guys are so freaking wholesome. I love that you are both so open minded and that your dad genuinely wants to understand, and learn about a genre he’s not familiar with. It’s pretty dope the way you do your best to give him information as well. Keep it up! Putting in a request for Erykah Badu On & On, Times Wastin are good intro songs that you could probably have a good discussion about. Also some Outkast like something from ATLiens or their first album.

I truly enjoy this chanel with you and your father. Such great reactions on great hits. Look into Scarface, "when a man dies". Great song. The song was released in 1994. It talks about the struggles on mental health in the black community. Scarface is iconic. Great storyteller. Great music 🥰

This one of my all time favorite songs! It changes my mood no matter where I'm at or what I'm doing I can't help but stop and just fall in the vibe of the song...
Duuuude, this channel is dope. You should show your pops some classic Kanye, "Family Business" and "Heard 'em Say" come to mind, proper heart-string tuggers. I'd love a reaction to Jedi Mind Tricks, "I Who Have Nothing" and Nas "If I Ruled the World", I bet he'll appreciate the depth in JMT's song and the samples, Nas's lyrics and Lauryn Hill's vocals.
Keep the reaction videos coming!
I love you & your father discussing & exploring music together
We need some Erykah Badu and some Jill Scott. Please . Love from the U.K
Song was written by the former piano player and early 2000’s super producer Scott Storch and the roots female vocalist Jill Scott
This channel deserves 10 million subs...
Thanks for your kind words. We’re having a blast.
Those drums at the end are pure 🔥 Great choice
Loveddd the discussion about this song!! Should definitely do The Roots - Break You Off (feat. Musiq Soulchild)!!!! Would love to see your reactions to it!! :))
I look forward to these videos, so nice getting another perspective...awesome;)
He should hear the one featured Jill Scott also. Beautiful vocals 💫💕💫
One of my all time fav songs... the end gives me chills EVERY TIME! Great choice to have your Dad listen to. Loving this channel
SALUTE TO THE SON FOR THE WAY HE BREAKS DOWN THE FEELING OF THIS SONG. SUBSCRIBING NOW!
This song is one of my favorite songs ever made.
I truly enjoy this chanel with you and your father. Such great reactions on great hits. Look into Scarface, "when a man dies". Great song. The song was released in 1994. It talks about the struggles on mental health in the black community. Scarface is iconic. Great storyteller. Great music 🥰
Love both of you guys, I'm 39 and educate my son (14) every day about lyrics from real rap. Respect to you kid. I'm from the Bronx and truly admire how you respect the art. Play nas "one mic" for your dad.
I think dance with the devil by immortal technique, really think this would be a great one for you guys to react to! Love your stuff keep it up!
Classic
For the shock factor
Good one 👌🏽
This song takes me back in time...as a college student in the late 90's figuring out who I was and feeling the rush and thrill of new love.
When is your dad going to get to pick some songs? I'm really curious about his taste in music.
Love how they’re both tapping their feet to the diff Rythms of the drums & love this song 🎶❤️
Erykah Badu is amazing. Her song Orange Moon he might love, if you wanna show him on his own time since it might be too relaxed for a reaction
Yes that is my favorite song from her!!!
I'm loving all of your song selections and I'm very impressed that you are so knowledgeable about music before your time. I'm 41 so many of these songs are during my coming of age. 😊
