Which non-fiction books should we add to our TBR?
"oh Simone" by Julia Korbik (available in French and German, but I'm not sure if there has been an English translation yet), it's an introduction about Simone de Beauvoir, feminist icon, philosopher, writer
Currently reading 'The Power of Women: A Doctor's Journey of Hope and Healing' by Dr. Denis Mukwege. It is incredible and frustrating at the same time. The author is an OB/GYN in Congo. He talks about how he became involved in treating women, particularly those who have suffered from se-xual violence. In the later chapters, he discusses how society view and treat women on a global scale. Some of the stuff pertaining to the US in particular is unbelievable. I've read Invisible Women and am currently listening to Radium Girls based of your recs. I've loved them. I think you'd like this one based off of your recs!

Love this list! Nonfiction is not really talked about on booktube aside from the bro-y self help books like "poor dad rich dad", so I'm really glad to see all these interesting nonfiction books! I added a few to my TBR and I'm definitely prioritizing the ones already in my physical tbr such as Come as You Are and Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents
Yes! I'm really glad I'm going out of my way to read more because they can be so much fun but it can be hard to know what's out there!
I’d highly recommend watching Olive from A Book Olive’s channel. She’s mostly nonfiction, specializing in science, nature, and memoir. She and Emily are my go to non fiction channels.
No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us by Rachel Louise Snyder blew me away. This not only focuses on victims of domestic violence but also what it does to law enforcement officers, carers, social workers, and even the abusers themselves. It made me think, broke my heart, and also helped me shift my views. Believe me, it does in depth with the “why didn’t she just leave?” question. 10/10 recommend.
Know My Name stands out among all those titles - one of the best books I read last year. A hugely important and powerful memoir.
Know My Name is such a good and important book! I listened to it as an audiobook and a few times had to sit still while listening to some sections of it. Disclaimer: I think it's the only autobiography I've read, so idk about comparisons to others.
I'm a fiend for memoirs, and it's the best I've read!
Awesome list!! Just a quick note that Lessons in Chemistry is fiction! I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on these books- in particular I’d really recommend Empire of Pain, What my Bones Know and Braiding Sweetgrass! One that’s not on your list that I LOVED was Being Mortal- easily one of my favorite nonfiction books ever.
Quackery was really informative and entertaining/horrifying. Hope you enjoy it!
I enjoyed Lessons in Chemistry…which is a fiction. It’s a fizzy, snappy book, but don’t let the cover trick you - there are some serious topics on page (SA and death as I recall, but there could be more).

Come as You Are was fantastic. I learned so much - there are way more misconceptions of female sexuality than I realized (stuff I've been buying into my whole life). The author does the narration and I felt enhanced the experience. She was included on a Netflix doc called Principles of Pleasure which I'd also recommend (it seemed to have wonderful representation and I learned even more). Good stuff.
I'm also hoping to up my non-fiction this year, and my books of choice are organizing, productivity, and nature. :)
About Harari: I enjoyed sapiens when first reading it but I learned afterwards that there are lots of scientific inaccuracies and even misinformation in the book. Some have called it populist science. So now I am hesitant to read anything else by him. His storytelling is great but if the content isn't correct that's not what I'm looking for in a non-fiction book...
Braiding Sweetgrass is one of my favorite books of all time and I’ve been re-reading it every spring. Would highly recommend the audiobook - RWK narrates it herself and has one of the most soothing voices you’ll ever hear ❤

Haven't listened to Braiding sweetgrass yet (it's on my February TBR) but recently had her other book gathering moss out from the library, highly recommend as well

3:34 I can’t commit to highlighting books (I might donate or resell them in the future!) so I use highlighter tapes, these super thin sticky notes like thing and a clear post it to annotate books with.
I think the author of Homo Deus is fairly controversial in the historian community. Several issues with his claims apparently
Come As You Are and Wordslut were fantastic! Know My Name was literally life changing, you should absolutely prioritize it

Salt is great! I am currently reading Empire of Pain. It's a slow to medium read but it's interesting and the writing is very visual. Happy reading 📚 😊
Currently I’m reading “Debt. The first 5,000 years”. It’s an anthropologist take on debt. I am in the middle of it, and so far so good, very interesting. I learned things I never knew about or neven even heard of.

Funnily enough I have also been thinking of reading more non-fiction books this year; last year I read 99 books but barely any non-fiction. This year I've already read 2 memoirs and am working on a third. Time to go binge all the videos on this channel!!!

I'm currently reading toxic positivity the one u mentioned in one of ur videos and so far it's pretty good
Chasing the scream is great. It is a very interesting book about the war on drugs and the numerous problems it has created.
Also A short history of nearly everything by Bill Bryson, which is my favorite non-fiction book.
It is a history of different scientific subjects such as Astronomy, physics, chemistry, and paleontology.
The book is written in a very entertaining way with a lot of wit and humor.
Chris Hadfield‘s non-fiction book was great! Really funny and informative. It has lead me to buy and read many more nonfiction books about space. Men Who Hate Women is on my TBR as well but still pushing it off for a bit because I know it‘ll leave me in a bad state. 🙈
Reading Non-fiction is my priority this year after, with my ever growing TBR, need to read them instead of collecting dust ... I've read Sapiens back in 2018 and might read Homo Deus in the near future ... Quackery, WordSl*t and Library have me intrigued ... have fun with the challenge ♥️

Some faves that i think you might enjoy are "the new odyssey" "working stiff" and "the psychopath test"
I read empire of pain last year and it was one of the best books I read last year. I tried the audiobook at first and couldn’t get into it, so I switched to the physical book and started flying through it. At my American high school we read In cold blood in the tenth grade. I remember enjoying it, but it is pretty dark.

Ah I'm trying to work through my accumulated physical and kindle tbr of non fiction too this year. Because I love to buy them and but then grab just fiction. So many of yours are on my tbr as well. I've actually read the astronauts guide a couple of years ago and thought it was really preachy. Really curious to see what you think. Good luck with them all!

I read Chris Hadfield's An Astronost's guide to life of earth years ago and I remember it made a huge impression on me. It was not what I expected but I loved it.
I love non-fiction and clicked on this video so fast when I saw it. Quackery and Empire of Pain is on my TBR.
Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker immediately comes to mind as a book I would recommend.
And I can’t wait to hear your thoughts on Know My Name. It will infuriate you (but in a good way) and should be required reading for everyone.

Men Who Hate Women was amazing! So glad you're going to read it.
I read a lot of nonfiction.
The topics are usually cookbooks, history, science, and homesteading/gardening books (in fact, I had three articles published in a national homesteading magazine last year).
Before I retired, I also read a lot of teacher/education books (I also wrote a book for elementary school teachers about Math tips, tricks, and techniques to make Math more interesting and fun for the kids, but it's not been published yet).
I also tend to enjoy audio for nonfiction and classics! I recently read The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben. It was actually really interesting but a little bit too long for me. I'm really intrigued by Quackery and I'm adding that to my March TBR! I'm eager to hear your thought on All the Living and the Dead - I may add that one if you like it!
Good idea I might try out some of these too if my library has them as well. I also want to read more about autism.

Confessions of a Yakuza was a great look at 1920s Tokyo! Really enjoyed that one.

Braiding Sweetgrass is fantastic - worth the hype 100% and amazing on audio and physical forms. I read Homo Deus a few years ago and really enjoyed it. Sapiens was still slightly better for me but it's a solid follow-up. I'm curious to know how it's aged since publication though...

I've found that graphic novels actually tell non-fiction really beautifully. My latest favourites were "Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands" by Kate Beaton (which I've mentioned in a comment section before) and "Grass" by Keum Suk Gendry-Kim (primarily tells the story of a Korean woman who was forced into s*xual slavery in the Second World War).
I've added many to my own list because of your videos, though. 😅
Angela Davis is one of my favourite authors and Are Prisons Obsolete? is my second favourite of her work. I came into it sceptical but I think she does a good job in explaining the naturalisation of prisons and how they actually exacerbate the effects of social issues rather than addressing the root cause of crime. I also loved Women, Race & Class and I think you would really like it too because it is one of the seminal texts on intersectionality (even before that term existed) !!
listened to Home Deus on audiobook and loved it! Be prepared to worry about the future! :)

It’s my goal to read at least 1 non-fiction of any genre per month. And so far I have kept to the goal. 😊 I read What my bones know and that book affected me so much. I had a trouble childhood and never grew up with my parents. So I related so much with this book. It made me realise that I am still traumatised by my childhood experiences. The next non-fiction book is Know my name. I have heard great reviews and I can’t wait to get into it.
I'm reading "A crack in creation : gene editing and the unthinkable power to control evolution" soon, it's on hold now. You might like it since you like sci fi.
Empire of Pain - Engrossing and tragic. Very revelatory and one of the most thoroughly researched books. 5 huge ⭐️ for me.
All the Living and the Dead - Fascinating and more emotional than I expected it would be. Another 5 ⭐️ read I highly recommend. “Will My Cat Eat My Eyeballs” by Caitlin Doughty is in a similar vein, very interesting, and accessible… plus, the author narrates the audiobook well.

Adult children of emotionally immature parents is on my physical copies wishlist... as the target audience for this book, it's really excellent! 10/10 would recommend :D
I also read Men who hate women as an ARC last year (If I remember correctly) and yeah, the topic is really heavy and quite depressing as a woman, but it's super well researched and developed!

'Men who hate women" is also the he original title(in Swedish) of'The girl with the dragon tattoo', the first book in the millennium trilogy. Just s tangential piece of info

Best non-fiction I read last year was "The Facemaker" bei Lindsey Fitzharris - it's about Harold Gillies who more or less birthed the plastic surgery we know today during World War 1. It's a bit on the darker side, but so worth the read.
Have you read The King’s Shadow about the lost city of Alexandria? It sounds great.
I listened to The Pain Gap yesterday and i totally agree that it's very surface level but still feel like people should read it

I loved Different by Frans de Waal. Its about gender from the viewpoint of a primatologist.
Homo Deus is not as good as Sapiens (which is such an elite book), but it’s better than 21 Lessons, so you should enjoy it!
I have 3 non-fiction novels that I really want to read this year. Word by Word: The Secret Life of Dictionaries by Kory Stamper, The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s Shining Women by Kate Moore & The Facemaker: A Visionary Surgeon's Battle to Mend the Disfigured Soldiers of World War I by Lindsey Fitzharris.
Word by word has definitely been added to my TBR
I've just begun "When Women Ruled the World - the Six Queens of Egypt" by Kara Cooney. It is looking promising.

Adult children of emotionally immature parents is on my to buy list this year. Probably won't get to read it until next year though
"In Cold Blood" is kind of fictional, because it´s based on Capote´s interviews with the murderers but he filled gaps with his own imagination - the story behind the novel is really fascinating, there are two movie versions about it, one with Sandra Bullock as his best friend, the other with Philip Seymour Hoffman as Capote (he won an Oscar for his role, I´d watch that one).
But you said you´d like to read more French - so I have a suggestion that you could file under non-fiction (feminist) or classics ;) Simone de Beauvoir´s "The Second Sex" is one of the foundational feminist books - and it was first published in French! I only read sections for a uni paper years back but want to reread it soon - so that´s a movie and a book suggestion for you :)
Have you read The Code Breaker: Jennifer Doudna, Gene Editing, and the Future of the Human Race, by Walter Isaacson? Highly recommend.

I'm currently reading How To Stand Up To A Dictator by Maria Ressa. She's a journalist in the Philippines/winner of the 2021 Nobel Peace prize. It's part biography, part activist manifesto. It's supposed to have good advice on dealing with social media and populist dictators. Which feels more and more relevant in Canada.

I actually just listened to They Were Her Property, and it was really good. It was brutal, but it truly felt like a history of white feminism.
I'm also hoping to clear off some unread books on my physical nonfiction TBR, including a couple of biographies of historical European queens (Catherine the Great and Eleanor of Aquitaine), a couple of memoirs (Lauren Graham and Tom Felton), and What We Owe to Each Other by TM Scanlon because it was referenced in The Good Place, haha.

also Men Who Hate Women was amazing and frustrating and so intense, i annotated the shit out of it. But please only read like a chapter at a time because it’s super upsetting and taxing

I read the book by Chris Hadfield last year after owning it for a while, as well. I thought it would be a 4 or 5 stars, because I love space and astronomy & I liked what I had seen and heard about Chris Hadfield. Unfortunately, I could not finish it and DNFed at about 80%. It was so dry and poorly written and his privilege was dripping from the pages and drowning me. I got so mad everytime I picked it up 🙈 Super interested what you think about it!
