    I have a set of these, because I love weird crap. It's worth trying them mounted underneath the levers rather than behind them. Depending on your setup and hands, this can make them more accessible and/or accessible from more hand positions. Also I find they work better with brake housing than shifter housing -- they have a ton of leverage, and I've actually ruptured shifter housing with them. They're hard to recommend simply because of their price, but they're very natural and convenient to use once set up to suit.

    It's cool that they made a groove for your thumb to go through while on the hoods, but I'd be concerned about getting my thumb stuck in there during a fall. Also, it'd be cool if they made rubber grips to go on the shifter levers. Overall, they look really cool and like a good, simple solution for shifting. Friction shifting is always nice and smooth. Another great video, Russ!

    I just use an old Deore DX thumb shifter in friction mode. With a longer bolt, the steel band can be expanded to fit around the 23.8 drop bar and the shifter has enough throw to accommodate my 1x9 setup. Oh, and it didn't cost $212 like the Dia Compe Ene wing shifters!

    I have a set of orginal ones from the 91 and they're great. Shifting with the thumb and then with the index finger is so easy. Kept them when I sold the bike and forgot about them until I saw your post on Insta and didn't even think to put them on bike with modern rear derailleur, I'm going to give them a try on my Cannondale XS800 build with Easton EA70AX bars,

  • @chris1275cc
    @chris1275cc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Suntour did something like that in the 90's called command shifters but they looked more modern and the levers were longer so you could mount them under the brake leaver clamp, and kind of partly under the rubber of the hood. The only issue is they were Suntour indexed (no friction mode) and only went to 7 speed, but you could dismantle them and remove the indexing ball bearings to give you full friction mode.

    • @piltrid1
      @piltrid1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They did an 8 speed indexed version (which could be switched to friction whilst riding). Have a set on my Superbe Pro bike from 1993, which I'm currently refreshing.
      (Also have a 7 speed indexed set, which I think also has the friction option)

      @@chris1275cc Good call! Went to garage to check. 7 speed: Indexed or "soft indexed". 8 speed: Indexed or "very soft indexed!" 8 speed is closer to friction then indexed, but is something there. Different to the 7 speed.

      I rode with them for several years, until a mounting band (spot welded, flat steel) broke. The mount held the shifter beside the brake body & that was key. Otherwise a mtb indexed thumbshifter with an extra wing. In the same period Burley was shipping tandems with indexed thumbshifters installed on the center of drop bars, next to the stem clamp, so instead of reaching down to a barend you moved your hand over - worked a treat on pavement, not so steady/accessible on trail.

    I just bought these for a gravel bike conversion similar to in the video. Bars with short reach and under tape cable housing is a struggle. I'm sure these work better with cable out the top old style brake levers on standard zero to little flair drop bars. They're interesting. I'm going to run them a while before I decide to do something more conventional. They're different. Most people will have no idea what they are. The cool factor is a 10! Function? We'll see.

    There is a ton of shifters like this. The base of course is pure down tube shifters but with their own clamp. There is ones on the quill stems, on the handlebars (been refereed as thumb shifters), bar ends and now this. I'm sure that there is more of them. There are ones purely with friction, there is indexed with anything from 6 to 11 sp and for different systems and combined of course.

    Proper blingy and somewhat intriguing. That thumb positioning I am not too keen on, though. Its one of the big conundrums for me that there are not at this day and age proper shifters for MTB groups for "racing" bars. Am running a mix and match lot of derailleurs, with a road front and a MTB back, both on friction with the Retroshifters triple ring Sugino front and 9 speed cassett in the back on the LHT. Trying to wind my head round 10X and 2 by 20 and such, but choose to go for the triple ring back when I built up the LHT 8 years ago, after a quick ponder of the 2 ring alternative. Seemed the reasonable thing to do, for a "one bike" set-up, which was what I was aiming for then.

I've seen a similar design that fits on the tops of the bars near the stem, rocking fore-aft -- so you can use your thumb to push the front wing forward/down over the front edge of the bar, or the back wing backwards/down over the backside

      @@PathLessPedaledTV They're poorly adapted to housing routed under the bartape (ie any lever from the last three decades or so) and are hard to squeeze on short-reach bars. And as another commenter said, if that thumbhole isn't outright uncomfortable while you ride, it's certainly an injury hazard in a crash. Tough sell.
      It's just really hard to give them credit for bringing back a component that's an awkward fit even for us retrogrouches. I'm always happy for more diversity in the component market, but this doesn't make a very strong case for itself.

    I suggest a new name for these. “Thumb breakers”.

    I have been lookingvat these with interest, but I have tektro brakes on my bike. I agree it would be nice to have a more suitable modern version.
