  • Through trial and error I found a way to remove the decorative plaster that a previous owner had used to cover up bad drywall decisions!

    Thank you! I had a newbie plasterer leave behind clumps of dried plaster on my wall. I was able to follow this video to remove them. It looks like they were never there. Thank you!

    We're moving in 2 weeks and the house we're moving to has this in over half the house ..over the entire walls!!!!. How in the world does someone think this looks appealing?!
    I appreciate this! I was perplexed on what to do

    Thank you sooooooooo much for posting this! You saved my bathroom walls! The people who owned the house before us had a Venetian Plaster look gone terribly wrong in the main floor half bathroom. There were large sections of plaster that were at least an 8th of an inch thick! Then they spray painted it silver and rubbed in the black paste to accent the plaster crevices. Not only did they do it on the walls, but on the ceiling too!!! We don't know what the heck they were thinking but I would love to drag their sorry butts back here to fix it. After we tried sanding it and it didn't work, I watched your video and you seriously saved us from having to gut the whole bathroom. Since we had already sanded down parts of it to get through the paint, we took a wet rag, just like you showed in your video, wiped down a section at a time and scraped it off with a heavy duty paint scraper. After that, any plaster still left on the wall just wiped off with a wet rag. I feel bad you had to go through all that trial and error, but I am so glad you posted your video about it! You saved us a ton of time, effort and money. Thank you!!!

      Krazy Mom Productions you need to be very careful with artex. If it was done in the 80s it contains asbestos and it should never be sanded. It is actually illegal to use power tools on asbestos walls. The dust created contain asbestos fibres which are a very toxic carcinogen if it enters the lungs. There are very strict guidelines on how to remove it and dispose of it. If the artexing was done after 2002 then it is likely it does not contain asbestos, but if it was before that then you have to be extremely careful not to breath any of the dust particles created when removing it.

    for all the scraping, I saw somebody actually use a wide putty knife duct taped to a shop vac hose. So all the debris from scraping get instantly sucked up. No mess afterwards! :)

    Don't bother with a damp rag, just use a spray bottle on the mist setting and get it nice and we. Let it sit for 10 to 20 minutes and it will peel off like soft butter.

    Just be careful as depending on when it was applied to the wall, it may contain asbestos.

    Wow!!
    I have nearly an entire apartment covered with this stuff, that I'd love to completely remove in order to do a fresh skim coat on the plaster walls. Misting and scraping was one method suggested, but with years of paint covering it.....needless to say, even with this method, I still have a huge job ahead of me.

    • @doconnor1354
      @doconnor1354 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      How did you eventually remove it and get it smooth? I have spackle build up on my plaster ceiling--about a 1/4" thick. The previous owner had a problem and fixed the crack but the amount of spackle and paint is a definite rise in the ceiling. I discovered this while removing cracked paint areas and discovered--I have a 1950's plaster ceiling--which is fine with me, but the owners did not prep the ceiling correctly and, ergo, it wouldn't accept any more paint. I stripped the ceiling and most paint came off easily but as Murphy's Law applies, the last 1/4 of the ceiling I grunted and groaned in harsh labor. The stubborn spot I tried using scrapers of varying length and CHISELS. This baby doesn't seem to want to move. If I sand the spot, it will take me a whole day. If that's what it takes then that's what I'll do. Any suggestions???
      DESPARATE.

      You could try and sand down a bit just to even the texture and then skim coat 1-2 times to get a even wall . That’s what I’m doing currently . If there is a easier way I’d love to know .

    • @jeadra
      @jeadra 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Cmikhailaa lol 4 years later, I'm still doing exactly that to smooth out the walls in our place. Scraping and sanding down the texture, then skim coating several times over it. It may not be the quickest way, but I'm seeing decent results from it. All the walls look so much better,and the house is nearly done.

    Thank you sooo much for posting this. I have been facing a wall that had a few largish holes from a teenage daughter. While I researched my husband would sneak in and said he could do it himself. Well today he said we need new drywall to make a new wall that covers the other one. I have a tone of joint compound and various forms of tape and patches to remove but I have hope now that I can save my wall.

    • @susanwalker8539
      @susanwalker8539 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      btw, my first husband did the same thing as your previous homeowner did. Started with a really bad job at drywall finish and then made a concoction that he used to cover all the walls. It was our first home and we had it build...all except the second floor which was our job to take finishing the drywall. Thats all we had to do and nope. couldnt be done.

      Bro just apply skin coat plaster by hand couple times then sand it with a sander no need to do all that and what they did on vedio, with a skin coat of plaster it Evans it abit making the texture lighter to sand

    Our house has this except its SUPER thick and you can literally see where they just took their fingers and smeared it through the plaster. My roommates and i have been calling it cakewall but I'm not sure if the style has a name

    I’m wondering if using a steam wallpaper stripper might do the job to moisten the artex sufficiently to allow it to be scraped off.

  • @clarewalkercjw
    @clarewalkercjw 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    After that first scrape if you cover the old artex with wallpaper paste (it allows the moisture to remain on the wall) and after a while - keep testing a smaill area until its easy, then scrape off. Very messy but if you have floors etc covered and a large bucket to collect the gooey scrapings.

    Makes sense. Sand the tips to expose the stucco for better water absorption and to soften it, then scrape away.
    How much area do you figure you remove in an hour?

    • @UknxwnSci
      @UknxwnSci 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the majority of that they have done with the sander, I would say estimated each layer removal is 3 minutes per 20cm so roughly you would have about 400cm within one hour. Though the timings can vary differently depending on how much exactly you're going to do all at once. But from the video it seems recommended to do a minimal amount each time

  • @Robin-sc1lf

    I'm not sure where you're from Canada/USA but here in the UK artex walls and ceilings have asbestos in them. You need to be uber careful with that stuff. I'm hoping and preying it didn't have asbestos in yours coz you were creating a lot of dust from sanding the artex. Here in the UK they made it illegal to add asbestos to artex in the early 90s. As long as it's not an old house or artex you should be fine.

    These artex removal videos are very irresponsible - probably just because the makers don’t understand the risk. Whether you call it artex or popcorn finish, you should test it for asbestos before removal. The tests are relatively inexpensive these days - particularly compared to the medical costs to be incurred if you or a family member contract an asbestos related illness! How much is your life worth?!
