Malaysia interprets it differently they said that the Sultan of Sulu already sold it to the Brits. The catch is, for decades, Malaysia paid the heirs of the Sulu sultanate RM5,300 or around $1,200, based on the 1878 agreement. For the Philippines, that Malaysia is paying rent means Sabah was only leased to the British. Malaysia, on the other hand, considers the RM5,300 as payment for the cession of Sabah. Malaysia said they stopped paying rent to the Sultan heir since 2013 and refused to give it back to the rightful owner
