This particular student might have been unfortunate to have suffered discrimination. But, two points stand out. Shakespeare is such a well-researched topic, let me add, around the world--it is like choosing Ramayana or Mahabharata for a PhD thesis in a Hindi Lang Dept. That too, you want to do this England and in Oxford! Coming up with some new, fresh ideas would be very hard. The PhD topic has to be chosen very carefully. Secondly, in 2023, 23% of Oxford undergrads were international, and 67% of its graduate students were international. If discrimination were rampant, such a high enrolment rate of the international students won't be feasible.
The epics you mention as points of comparison constitute a part of Sanskrit classicism, not Hindi literature unless we're speaking of translations or folk and oral literature renditions of the same . Although the analogy makes sense , perhaps you need to do a lot more learning yourself in light of the very basic error you committed 😅
Also, the best place to conduct research on canonical English literature ( as is her area of interest) would be Oxford and England, so I don't think she erred in making that choice
I came across a gofund me page to help her seek justice. Tough task against Oxford. It is not rare for academic institutions to do such unjustice to students. The plagiarism of researchers' work is also not uncommon, even in premier institutes. I hope she wins, and this improves such situations in the future for other students as well. She's been brave enough to have spoken up. She should be supported.
Print degrades itself by giving platform to this nonsense. More than half in oxford are international students with 30% made of Asians. If we are so concerned about discrimination let's look at the rampant discrimination of minorities in India.
Not just the minority the racism against other indians too like Biharis, north eastern people, dalit, south indians and the list goes on. Indians are really good at crying racism abroad. Any kind of disagreement in the west is seen as racism. So much inferiority complex we have despite having 5000 years old culture is laughable 😂😂😂
She is talking about a particular case where she feels she is a victim, and you didn't live her life, whereas, what you are stating is a general issue. Stop linking some general issue to a particular case. With you le dumb argument. Would it be right to say a Muslim in Pakistan forcefully converts christians, so Muslims in India should not talk about discrimination? Isn't it a lame argument like yours.
Why do people like you set up these false dichotomies between looking at racial discrimination and focusing on minority experiences in India? So if minorities are in fact discriminated against in India, does that make her case false, and how will unfairness to her benefit minorities... Dimwit
People confuse privilege and intellect. Oxford is a place for the privileged as perfectly captured by the term "Oxford man". The term is not a reflecting of the intellect, but the privilege (social, political, financial), race and gender. I wish students with the intellect pursue further education in institutes with a focus on academic excellence and integrity.
You cannot escape Raciality or Caste-ism in academia, be it in England or India. Difficult to come across an academic who is free from all these biases. As it is in the court now , let's see what happens.
It appears there is a clear instance of politics being played here. One of the assessors seems to have attempted to discredit her work after failing her and then allegedly tried to claim it as their own. Such allegations are unfortunately not new; history is replete with similar accusations, even in the field of scientific discoveries, many of which have proven to be true. I stand in full support of her, as this scenario is entirely plausible and, sadly, not uncommon. A similar incident happened with my sister during an international conference. She delivered a speech of remarkable quality, which gained significant attention. However, the organizer requested her documents, subsequently incorporated her work into his book, and failed to give her any credit for it. It’s worth mentioning that my sister went on to win second prize at that seminar, further affirming the value of her contribution.
Meeting artists and philosophers at Oxford University? Bloomsbury? Somerset Maugham handles this obsession in his novel “of Human Bondage.” The setting is Paris. V.S. Naipaul called for closing down all the departments of Liberal Arts. He was being polite. Joseph Conrad never accepted Knighthood for his contribution to Literature. Perhaps the cure for any temptation is to succumb to it, according to Oscar Wilde.
Yaar first and foremost if racism is a problem why are 46 percent of the students are international in Oxford Secondly she got into PhD by paying into a course probably with very few takers so relatively 1000 s of students study there , do you think all of them pass ? If they pass everyone how will they be a premier institute? You might be a bright cookie in madurai bur when you are studying in the top 10 university in the world you are nothing special all the other students are equally or smarter than you
Did you listen to the entire interview? Did you pay attention to its content? If you can't support people, don't make unnecessary comments to put them down.
@@vibhu7421 it seems you have not seen the entire interview , I am sorry that I wasted my time watching it Anyway you will never go to Oxford so keep saying sour grapes
This is not an undergraduate course - the fact she was accepted in to the PhD must mean the academic staff deemed she was capable. Also if during the program her supervisor thought her thesis was not up to standard, it is their job to guide and advise how to improve it - you can't just fail the course.
@@IrfanAli-qp1gm thesis is not evaluated by your own teachers, they guide you when you do it but the final decision is with independent evaluation You can definitely can “get rejected” if it’s not upto the mark
Oxford is for privileged students, and why study English literature anyway when you are not english. Bcoz those guys would be able to articulate English literature much better. If you want a decent job or respect go foreign to master sciences and you could study Indian literature. Plz don’t go foreign for these bogus degrees.
I believe her. As an Indian academic, lecturer, and researcher in English Studies myself, both my experience in the domain and my gut instinct , upon hearing her narrative, tell me that her complaint and story are ABSOLUTELY CREDIBLE. I'm just worried that taking on an institution like Oxford University will not be smooth sailing at all. It's the institution of institutions, and if this matter goes your way in court Lakshmi, it will be a precedent setting case for future generations enrolling at Oxford .
A committee of subject experts independent of assessers should be appointed to investigate the things and do justice

😂 Her whole project was quite fresh actually, did you even hear her explain her proposal?
Research on Shakespeare cannot be said to have been exhausted if its true that there are supervisors all ready to plagiarize students' research

The discrimination could be more to the fore in the Dept. she was accepted in - it does seem a very niche subject.

I don’t think It's racial. It’s must for her low quality work. So she was considered for a better reasearch in Masters
No, I'm from the field. She's really quite good!
