US Military's $19M, 4500HP, 6 Axis, Aircraft Motion Simulator: KRAKEN Disorientation Device

  • In this video, take a up-close look of Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton’s Disorientation Research Device, “The Kraken.”
    "At 245,000 pounds, 4,500 horsepower, simultaneous motion on six axis, sustained planetary motion of 3G, and horizontal travel to 16.5 feet, the Kraken will allow researchers to create the most realistic motion simulations never before imagined - except by perhaps one person - the pioneering physician, Navy Capt. Ashton Graybiel, who dared to imagine the physiologic impacts of motion and acceleration on the human body, said Navy Capt. Rees Lee, NMRU-D commanding officer.
    "The Disorientation Research Device, together with the human centrifuge and hyperbaric chamber at the 711th Human Performance Wing will set Wright-Patterson Air Force Base as the center of acceleration research in the nation," said Lee.
    The Kraken is a mystical creature from the deep whose tentacles twist and toss its victims until they don't know which way is up. Naval Medical Research Unit Dayton, stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is using its own Kraken not to destroy but to save lives.
    See how this monster from the depths is working to protect American aviators. Video Include footages of the device and military personnel who operate, maintain and program the device.

      This machine is meant to simulate the motion and feeling of a fighter jet moving around in the sky, and less of a full on simulator game. That plane is not in DCS, and from I have heard their SDK is not openly available. Meaning there is a very limited pool of people that develop for the platform. Making me think the only real way the platform would be picked is through connections to the members who made the choices for this project. Arguably the platform they choose they are running at minimal settings since x-plane (based off cockpit, terrain, airport "objects") did not have to look that bare in 2017. But for them, it looks like they went with a minimum viable product, and DCS is far from the minimum.

      It's not really meant to be a flight simulator, it's meant to get pilots used to spacial disorientation and getting knocked around in the cockpit.

      Frame rate of the camera vs. the monitors could be off, ever seen footage of helicopters flying where it looks like the rotors aren't spinning?

      @@KumaBean considering it is military tech, I would venture to bet that it is lag. We used a simulator for infantry fighting when I was in and it was horrible. The equipment was trash and the software's resolution/framerate and graphocs looked identical to this. Military grade = trash.

    That's really cool, I remember wondering if modern technology could reliably simulate the g-forces a fighter pilot experiences a while ago, I guess here's my answer.

      Ask an experienced pilot if it simulates real flight?

    • @ozbejsturm544
      @ozbejsturm544 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      and even though its not the perfect experience because of how it will make you feel the g force is utterly different. this thing has two axial movement on the cockpit as we see here although cockpit can turn 360 it doesnt make flying experience fully immersed with the motors where it ll drag you one point to another. when you get a g force it happens with the resultant of the vector of movement and gravity. and as you can see here in a enviroment like this whenever the g force you are willing to create isnt at the same level or plane surface area that is parallel to the axis of g force simulating motors, the force you ll create most likely going to be unreal experience than what you re trying to simulate. and i dont even count on the delay of the motors in lateral axis.

    It’s not a flight simulator per say.. it’s a physiology testing device. That price tag is actually surprising considering our non motion sims (with accurate controls and physics specific to aircraft model) run roughly 20-30 mil. The simulators have much better graphics and have the ability to mimic what you see in the aircraft. The controls are all the same as the aircraft you are flying right down to the tension in the throttle (there are some minor feel differences). This isn’t something they needed to make into a training simulator. Hence the use of an off the shelf game and stick and throttle.

    This is gonna be great for those unmanned fighter drones. Real g-load feedback etc., you won’t overstress the aircraft and still be able to fight. We can make fighters smaller and make way more of them. Make them more menacing. Or just make airframes that can handle 20gs and have zero force feedback for the pilot so they can do unreal maneuvers against our enemies.
    Imagine a fighter that doesn’t require life support systems and etc for pilot comfort, it’d be so much lighter and more maneuverable. Imagine a full honeycomb like internal structure. No OBOGS, no a/c or heater, none of those heavy systems.
    They definitely need to move to X-planes. MSFS is old news.

    19 million and they using graphics from 2004 😂da fuck , there so many amazing simulation worlds for flight simulators today. I dont understand why they dont use them. With 19 million dollars they still couldnt even afford not even 100$ of the software. Like cmon 😂 and it's not just this one. Many high tech million dollar simulators, with motions. Have graphics from 2005......or maybe they just waiting for Microsoft flight simulator 2020 like the rest of us 😂
