    My friend and I begun to make a VN. I write, he draws and we both program.
    And you have no clue how much we love these channel. Since we decided to use RenPy, your tutorials have been a huge help.
    Not only they are really well explained, but also there's a example for everything you say and it makes it so easy to follow.
    Thank you so much for making these videos.
    We're really looking forward to the next one. Be it a tutorial or some idea from other game, to take into account.

      Thank you! That means a lot! I'll still be doing tutorial videos for a while, but I'm gonna start sprinkling in some "soft skill" tutorials in the coming months. I have a longer video planned on writing next week, so 🤞 hopefully that will be a help!

    Twine is my go to. It makes my writing easy. I asked you awhile back if you had ever used twine and you said no that you use google docs for your writing. I'm so happy that you made a video about this. So many people don't know about twine

    I'm curious how complex it would be to make a game like original Myst with this setup. I don't think Twine would let you import a top-down map to use as a frame of reference for character positions.

    • @vimi
      @vimi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a very complex question!
      Personally, I think if you were making a Myst-esque game, this setup would work really well for initial design (each of the perspectives I would probably treat as different "rooms" in the same block), but if you're trying to integrate this as a step between "map designed" and "integrate into renpy", you might have an easier time using a spreadsheet instead!

    • @vimi

    • @vimi
      @vimi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Pino1536 That's a lot harder than you'd think it is!
      If you're converting a game from Python to HTML5, you have to rewrite all of the code and architecture, because both of them work so differently!
      During the depreciation of Flash, for instance, tons of companies made BANK providing HTML5 conversion processes for older games; even with automating tools, it's a very laborious process, and animations had to be converted to frame-by-frame sprites, or reanimated entirely!

    how do you you make the comic bubbles for the text box?

    • @vimi
      @vimi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would size and place the word balloons individually for each line of dialogue, and the text I would put in unique spots on screen by using the "show text" tag (which displays text like an image, so I could use the action editor to custom place it.)
      It was very labor intensive, and I would not recommend doing it for an entire VN like I did, but for certain scenes or lines of dialogue, it has some interesting utility.

    It's usually "IF crowd" who recommends me Twine. But for some reason I need to learn RenPy instead. The question is... how many "IF alike" tools RenPy has? I mean, stuff that uses text input by player such as keywords or commands, that you type.

    • @vimi
      @vimi  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Text input is very doable:
      www.renpy.org/doc/html/input.html
      That being said, evaluating text commands is always a hassle, which is why a bunch of games tend to default to menus, but there are effective ways to have an always-on menu screen so you can always have certain player commands available as buttons.

    This is so incredibly useful, thank you for making me discover this! I'm more of an artist and writer than a programmer, so keeping track and being able to manage a whole game on renpy was becoming a bit too stressful and complicated. Now I can finally keep track of everything easily! (and can put all the cgs, backgrounds and sprites I made to good use lol)
    Oh, anyway! Apparently the converter updated and supports characters definitions and variables now, that's even better! :D

    Would you recommend an app or something if one were to design a whole visual novel in it?

    • @vimi
      @vimi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I would not recommend any all-in-one production tools for visual novel development.
      During game production, you're going to use a lot of different, specialized tools for different tasks; even in robust game engines like Unity, there's a degree of integration to be expected with other programs, and big game companies often design their own internal, proprietary tools that work with that particular organization's workflow.
      Game writing is no different - sometimes, a simple fullscreen text editor works best, or a spreadsheet, or flowchart software like Twine. Different tools for different tasks.
      Find tools that feel fun, useful, or put you in a good state of mind, and then find ways to integrate them into your workflow!

      This tool has been getting a lot of updates recently, but at this stage, I wouldn't advise using it except in small, discrete circumstances, like I've mentioned in this video.
      If the tool eventually grows into something more robust, then maybe I'll do another spotlight on it, but for now, I think making a ren'py game in twine outside VERY specific situations makes programming way more complicated!
