Clapping is an essential part of sufi music. It is a process of enabling everyone to sync together. The sufi music's main theme is surrender to God and a big part of music is to praise God. Even this song talks about the almighty God and a urge/desire to merge yourself with God. The clap usually elevates the state of mind. This usually results in a meditative effect...

And important to remember that, that 'god' is shapeless, form less, a universal soul per ce, distributed equally in exact same concentration throughout the universe, and one's soul could be merged with it through intense devotion and expression!

This is a nice version but Nothing Tops the original.
Trio - AR Rehman, Javed Ali and Mohit Chauhan made this truly masterpiece.
I repeat.. Every song in RockStar deserves reaction and analysis.
Mohit Chauhan was choosen as voice for the lead actor, so whenever you see the main guy singing it's his voice.
Other singers voices are used as background.

Glad you said it. The real video and the composition from Rockstar can only do any kind of justice to the words and music. This is honestly, really bad from Berklee - I felt no connectivity, no flow, zero emotions, they are doing whatever. Jiya Jale from them was also bad. Don't know why their AR Rahman redos are so watched. I mean they might all be amazing musicians, but a composition, when it comes to Indian songs, need to have words and emotions in sync with vocal tones and music. I'd always suggest people new to Indian music to watch original compositions first. Our music directors really know how to compose a piece.

  • @adityaagarkar1378
    @adityaagarkar1378 3 ปีที่แล้ว +72

Regarding the topic of finding the subtle notes, efra hit it on the nail that the Raag decides the notes that you can hit.
Watch more Indian music theory. Watch a 45-60 min classical video by Shubha Mudgal, Kaushiki Chakroborty, Pt Bhimsen Joshi. In those videos you will be able to see the complete exploration that these musicians do with the Raag.
How it starts really slow with the most core notes and the amount of permutations and combinations of those notes which bring out the beauty of the raag itself. It will then speed up where they will start to fit in phrases using the notes of the Raag and then the fast combos while keeping perfect tempo.

The magic of Indian music is embedded in its spiritual roots. Millenia of spiritual accomplishment flows through the very core of Indians, the language, it's scared geography and cultural practices that includes music. It should not be surprising that the music is transcendental and always manages to tug those emotions that no other music is capable of. To start understanding the music, it is important to understand the people and its ancient history. If music is your poison then start with "Natyashastra", its the foundational text for all Indian performing arts. The best thing to do is immerse yourself in India by visiting the place. A formal course at an institute like Berklee will apply the western scientific standards of attempting to explain something by decomposing it but is never successful at explaining the holistic magic. Go beyond the science...

This is one of my most favorite songs in the world. You must listen to the original movie version. I think it’s a lot of magical than this one. And god the lyrics. I wish you guys could understand hindi/urdu. It’s such a beautiful language and English translation doesn’t even do any justice. The feeling of catharsis you get from this song can only be fully realized with its lyrics. (And that’s one of the things that differentiates hindi songs from English you know??) The language in itself is SO RICH AND POETIC!! I personally find English very basic. It’s good for speeches but falls so flat when it comes to poetry in comparison. Just my thoughts!!!

India has this gift of nature, anyone coming in contact with Indian culture becomes great. So India was most invaded .. we have a history of thousands of years may be million of years of continuous existence .. yes the language is most scientifically designed on the planet. Sanskrit is the mother of all world Languages .. music in India is since atleast ever.. actually sanskrit is so melodic that talking without rythem is not even possible.. all our million of thousands old texts are in poetry form. But the special thing is ,yes it's very complex but it's very easy to adopt aswell ..you just need to connect to the land and culture.. surely it's a place to be there to explore

Great discussion and analysis, it's illuminating for me coming from Indian music as well to know how you guys think. Regarding the question of whether or not they're improvising, in this case, with the large number of singers and instruments, everything is probably precomposed -- even the individual bits. But in a smaller concert, there may be a lot of improvisation on the same basic song.

    "Be, and it is"
this is what "Kun, Faya Kun" literally means...
When Allah says in the Quran that Whatever/Whenever He( Allah is neither He nor She, it is because of limitations of human languages and the 'He' here is used for ease of purpose) wishes to create something He just commands it to be and it is, hence "Kun Faya Kun".
Allah is the Ultimate Creator, everything and everyone else is a creation (His creation) and thus we, who usually refer to our endeavours as creativity, are just discoverers at best in every art form.
This is the crux on which this edifice stands, these melodies revolve around.

Just in case you guys didn't realise, the violinist who sang is actually an Iranian artist, and he was basically singing in Arabic, even though he only sang two words "Ya Ali" which I believe is a Muslim term used to invoke the nephew of Prophet Muhammad, Ali Ibn Abu Talib. Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
EDIT: Ali was not himself a prophet but the nephew of Prophet Muhammad.
