After watching your interviews I always feel that I have learned something. On the subject of being a better informed voter the thing that I find most frustrating is the way that Politicians refuse to answer the difficult questions asked by the media. Rather they pivot their response and reply with meaningless platitudes on subjects that may or may not be related to the specific question asked. This is done by all Canadian Politicians regardless of Party - so I don’t blame them. What I don’t understand is why the press is not more insistent on having them answer the specific question directly. Doing this would help us voters decide. I would be interested in David’s views on the subject of media coverage of the political process.

Increasingly of the opinion that Trump should be prosecuted for all his crimes large or small. The message has to be sent that eventually anyone committing such crimes will be held accountable. This is an important principle to reaffirm in a major democracy but more important it sends a clear message to others who might try the same playbook that at the very least they will be mired in legal jeopardy for years to come. Also the enablers who surrounded him should him should face jail time.

I'm revolted by Pompeo, DeSantis, and Haley. They believe what Trump believes. So what's the difference? The problem is that even responsible conservatism is a losing proposition for our future. I think the progressive effort to level the economic playing field and eliminate the huge discrepancy in income and wealth is essential if our democracy is going to survive.

The Manhattan indictment will look like a curious sideshow when the more serious deluge of charges comes raining down in Georgia and from the DOJ within the next few weeks. In the meantime, the Manhattan DOJ is doing his damn job, which is something I was not expecting. Frum promoting criminal activity is sad. He hasn’t a clue what the DA has in addition to the 34 charges but he opines that hey this sleazy guy isn’t worth the effort. In other words he is above the law. You can do better David.

Frum reminds me of all the Marxist intellectuals who suddenly, in the early 1990s, had to deal with the obvious fact that the Communist regimes that they had encouraged and promoted were monstrous tyrannies rejected by the populations they ruled ---- something which decent people knew from the beginning, but which the intellectuals had wilfully blinded themselves to. Frum's Conservatism is a virtual clone of Communism. It appeals to the same type of intellectual and commits the same crimes. Like the academic Marxists, he struggles desperately to preserve the crackpot economic theories that led him to supporting monsters. He will not self-examine. He will not own up to the crimes he was complicit with in the past. Is he saying "Hey, I was totally wrong when I worshipped Reagan when he supported bloodthirsty religious fanatic dictators and helped them slaughter peasants, and wrong to support the crackpot economic theories that destroyed America's middle class prosperity, and wrong when I helped billionaires undermine and sabotage democracy." Nope. You find his type all over the universities of Europe. Intellectuals exactly like Frum did everything in their power to support Communist tyrannies, then, when the horrors could not longer be covered up or excused, cluck-clucked and tut-tutted their way into a pretense that they had nothing to do with them and "always" had opposed them. The Conservative movement that Frum dedicated his life to is exactly the same thing as the Communist movement that it always envied and mimicked. Frum was perfectly happy when the Republican-backed dictator Efraín Ríos Montt declared that he would rule "with a Bible in one hand and a machine gun in the other" and slaughtered helpless peasants by the thousand (while Reagan declared him a saint). He was perfectly happy when Conservatives made bribery and corruption the foundation of American politics. He is not someone we should be looking to in order to overcome Trump and his sick totalitarian cult.

Purple prose and pompous straw-manning. The Cold War wasn't tiddlywinks, it was a maximum-stakes grinding contest over whether or not the Soviets would be able to conquer the world, either one bit at a time, or eventually (having achieved military dominance) all at once via ultimatum or attack. The task of a statesman or ordinary citizen is to see who or what is the biggest and most immediate threat, then isolate that threat from as many other power centers as possible (resources, allies) while connecting yourself to as many power centers as possible. When that threat is then neutralized or sufficiently reduced, re-calibrate to see what the biggest most immediate threat is at that point and act accordingly. Lather rinse repeat.
What you're doing is like getting all elaborately judgy over America having allied with the Sicilian Mob and the British Empire and the Soviet Union in the death-struggle with the Axis. Oh no, the Mob were crooks and the British did this and that objectionable bad thing to crush independence movements. Stalin was a mass murdering monster. All true, but the proper evaluation is not to compare to saintly purity but TO THE ALTERNATIVE. Stalin was a monster but Hitler was WORSE. Stalin did not actually intend to exterminate entire nations. He actually believed his crackpottery would lead to more prosperity and happiness, while Hitler INTENDED slavery and death forever to outgroups he subjugated and invaded. This is why we allied with Stalin against Hitler. Once Hitler was beaten, then it was appropriate to re-evaluate the world in its new situation and see Stalin as the remaining big threat. That's not a character flaw, not moral evasiveness evading accountability, for the "crime" of having helped Stalin's regime during the war. It's remaining true to the same principles while being pragmatic and applying them a new to new situations.
Yes various tinpot dictators in the Cold War were bad men and compared to saintly virtue were horrible. But compared to the nightmare of that country becoming another gulag regime let alone a North Korea, they were preferable, especially because they were local rather than part of some global scheme of conquest.
Looking at the world through a soda straw, not seeing the broader picture, is either ignorant or deceptive.

@@IrishCarney As someone who was intimately familiar and involved with the struggle against Communist tyranny in Eastern Europe in the 1980's, I have a lifetime of familiarity with this kind of pompous, nonsensical "realpolitik" sophistry. It's always trotted out to support any corrupt or obviously evil action. Communists spout exactly the same nonsense when attempting to justify their intimate alliance with the Nazis.
Republican support for brutal dictators like Ríos Montt had NOTHING to do with fighting against Communism, and EVERYTHING to do with fattening the coffers of their corporate friends. Supporting democracy in Latin America would have done infinitely more to combat the Communist threat than murdering peasants to make bananas cheaper.
