I had that when I was born and had the surgery to fix it. My mother didn’t have the money to pay for it. After going to many hospitals, she finally found a doctor who would do the surgery for free. I was born weighing 8lbs 12 ozs, less than 2 months later, I weighed only 2 lbs 3 ozs...The doctor was a Pastor at a local church as well. Thank God for that man who saved my life

The surgery done to rectify this is THE most gratifying procedure you can imagine - the infant responds immediately and the vomiting stops. My son had this - a thickening the band surrounding the space where the stomach connects to the intestine. It causes everything to come back up.

My daughter had surgery for this at 12 days old. She started vomiting at 7 days old and by 11 days old she didn't have a pee diaper for 12 hours. Her ped thought it was an allergy to formula or breast milk. Can't blame her it was a weird case. I just hope providers and students keep this in mind.

My first born daughter actually had this at 2 weeks old. I took her to the doctor the next day after her projectile vomiting started, and luckily it was immediately found. This was almost 20 years ago. It was traced back to my father's side of the family, and I passed that gene along. My second born child, boy, had no issues. Both of my kids know that they could possibly pass this to their kids. Sad this little boy went 3 weeks:(

So glad you had this! I am on a peds rotation and thought a newborn had this but attending said he was too old. U/S didnt show stenosis, so I am glad you had one here for me to see! I think the step 2 answer was get a chem 7 concerned for metabolic alkalosis and hypochloremia so this was PERFECT! Thanks again Dr Mellick.

I was born in 1958 down on the Ohio River ( just over the hill from our house)!
I had pyloric stenosis & the docs all said I was too small for surgery or didn’t’ do that back then! My poor folks spent a month listening to me scream & projectile vomiting (sorry). The lady across the street was a nurse,so when my folks couldn’t take it anymore, she’d come over & watch me! My folks went all over and finally at the Wheeling Hospital, they gave me a baby dose of phenobarbital and it relaxed my stomach enough to get the food down! I still have trouble with my stomach when I’m anxious! I thank God babies can get the surgery now!! 🩷

Im 55 & was born with it in ‘66. Growing up in a very rural area, it took 3 months before it was diagnosed & that’s because my parents were told the hometown doctors could do nothing else. Luckily, the city children’s hospital knew as soon as they saw me. Got a nice scar across my stomach. Makes a nice conversation piece at the pool/beach. Plus, cool side note, the doctor who did my surgery (Dr Judson Randolph) appeared on a short lived medical docu-drama in the mid 70s on NBC.

Went through that w/our daughter 28 1/2 yrs ago. Projectile vomiting started at approx 1-week old within seconds after each feeding. Went to the doctor (pedetrician) 6 times in 6-weeks, seeing 3 different doctors in the process. At that time, they weren't looking for Pyloric Stenosis because it was so very rare to appear in a female. Wasn't until we saw the same doctor that I had seen as a child that the correct diagnosis was found. She had corrective surgery the very next day, with no looking back.

I found this video really interesting.23 years ago my daughter was finally diagnosed with pyloric stenosis after 7 terrible weeks of backwards and forwards to the drs,it wasn’t picked up on barium swallow it was from an ultrasound and she had ramstadt procedure that day.our daughter was our 3 rd child so that made it difficult to find and she’s female, our first born son never had it.we always knew she wasn’t ever right but no one could tell what exactly it was,she projectile vomited every feed and had reflux too and hardly gained any weight.and now 23 years later she has had a healthy baby boy of her own 💙

I had pyloric stenosis. I underwent surgery at 8 weeks of age. By that time I was less than birth weight and had developed a tumor. I was not expected to survive but thrived after surgery. My son had the most severe form of Hirschprung's. His treatment was removal of his complete colon and six inches of the small intestine and creation of a j-pouch. I have read that there is some indication that if one of these conditions exist in the family the other is more likely to occur.

I just ran across my post below while researching new GI health issues I'm facing. After my surgery, as an infant, my mother was told to expect that I would continue to have GI problems during my lifetime and I have. I've recently been diagnosed with Barret's Esophagus and Chronic Gastritis and a tumor discovered in my pyloric antrum. It makes me wonder if there truly is a connection to the pyloric stenosis.

My daughter is almost 9 and she almost died from that, it is very seriouse. If any child is vomiting after they drink their bottle or eat and if yiu tryed soy and lactose free milk or formula and the symptoms do not go away, the sever vomiting will cause severe dehydration leading to death in your infant or child, got to the hospital asap and ask for a MRI scan, its not in the intestines it's the valve opening and closing your stomach to your digestive system!

Very interesting. My father had HPS, he was the first born male. He had his surgery back in 1929. I am the fifth of five daughters, and had my HPS surgery at five weeks old in 1968. My dads scar looks like a huge bellybutton…like six inches diameter. He told people it was a bayonet wound from the Korean War. 🤣 My sisters tell stories about me puking all the way across the room. 😬

  • @67lomeli

These cases are are often misdiagnosed, often as reflux esophagitis, which begins at birth, not at 2 to 3 weeks. If a baby's weight is less than the birth's weight at 4 weeks, something serious is going on. Vomiting causes the expulsion of HCl, thus the hypochloremia (low chloride). Thanks for posting.
