Republic Services Recycling Cart Removal Program - Fremont, CA

  • Hey y'all! I said a little while ago that I would have something a bit different for you guys. Little backstory though.
I was in Fremont for the second week in a row, trying to find one of the city's Leach Crocodiles. I decided on a whim that I would head to a different neighborhood. As I was heading there, I noticed a pickup truck with its' trailer completely full of brand new carts. I remembered my aunt had her carts replaced a couple of weeks prior, so I thought there was probably a rollout in the neighborhood I was in. Sure enough, after passing a crew distributing brand new green carts, I stumbled upon this crew in a cul de sac.
All of the BFI carts you see were from the original rollout they did in 2003-2004, back when they had McNeilus Automators roaming the streets. Over the course of 15+ years, many had survived the test of time, as evident from the sheer number of BFI carts being removed. I'm not sure why the city decided that Republic Services had to do a new rollout considering many of these bins would have been good for another 5-8+ years easily. They did cite many carts being "faded" and "mismatched color coding" as reasons, which I find RS/the city to be at fault for that, but I digress.
WasteRec was the company that was doing this for Republic Services. They mostly ran a crew of 2-4 per truck & trailer. The recycling rollback guys had it pretty easy in my opinion, since all they had to do for the most part was whack the wheel off, and since most carts were the same size, they stayed pretty organized. Some of the other rollback crews looked pretty messy, considering that they had to pick the wheels with awls to remove them, and the different sizes of the carts made stacking a bit difficult.
This crew was pretty chill, and they let me take a cart, so kuddos to them for working pretty damn hard and quick. I will be uploading another video of the ROLLOUT crew. That was even more fun lol.
    Anyways, enjoy the video!

All these carts are like a timeline chronicling Republic’s history and lineage.

rollout wasn't needed imo. at least 75% of these carts would have been perfectly fine for another 10+ years. last time i was in fremont, there were cracked bodies and broken lids everywhere on the new carts

That’s real sad all these carts are getting recycled. Most of them were in great condition and easily could’ve lasted longer. Shame on you for not getting more carts lol
