I was an 11 year old awestruck kid. My dad got me a pit pass, I was in heaven. Getting autographs, stickers, posters. What a time to be alive. Edmonton hosted some legends. Hulme, Donahue, Siffert, Oliver, Revson, Cevert, Stewart and so so many more. F5000, Trans Am, such awesome memories. Gr8 Video, thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I was at that race. The original Edmonton Speedway, it was a world class venue. People lined the 2.5 mile track. I think over 200,000 attended the event. Sadly the track no longer exists. My Brother raced his Lotus 23b there for years. It was quite a challenging track.
    Sure miss those days.

It is the 1972 Can Am. Team McLaren did not contest the 1973 season. Denny Hulme #5 Gulf McLaren M20 Chevy lead first 37 laps, finished 2nd to Mark Donohue # 6 L&M Penske Porsche 917-10 Turbo. This is an amazing upload! To read about a race in Can Am histories and then to actually see it is wonderful. A very competitive late 1972 Can Am season race! Penske Porsche locked out the front row Mark Donohue (1972 Indy 500 Winner) and George Follmer (1972 Can Am Champion) , with Denis Hulme (2nd 1972 Can Am Season 3rd 1972 F1 Season) and Peter Revson Team McLaren (5th 1972 F1 Season 6th 1972 Can Am Season) occupying the second row.

I went to many CanAms - anywhere within a day's drive of Toronto. These films are exciting, but nothing can replace being somewhere like corner 2 at Mosport when a pack went by. It is hard to explain rationally, but it was a physical experience - adrenalin + noise + speed + colour + cheering crowds. I've been to many F1 races, and while they're great there isn't anything near the sheer brutality of the CanAms. They remain, to me anyway, the best series ever.

Edmonton speedway at the bridge turn.. those monsters accelerating out of green bank turn and coming right at you. The acceleration was mind blowing. Then how late they brake!!.. next second they have made the hairpin and on the gas as the back end fights for grip and that big block blasts it’s exhaust at you. The 917s were slightly quieter than the Chevy big blocks, but man did they belch flame when down shifting.

That commentator at the start sounds like he's really not sure what to say haha. This is awesome though!

Perhaps they handed him a script and told him "just wing it...they can't hear you over the roar of the engines" Ha Ha
