Long Table 189. Antony’s Cistophori in Asia Minor

Cistophori are denominations introduced by the Attalids, and their production was maintained by the Romans when the territory came under their control. Minor modifications were introduced, but it is only with Antony’s cistophori around 39 BC that significant changes can be observed when his portrait appears on the obverse, and accompanied by the portrait of his wife Octavia. The typology also puts forward Dionysus, the deity to whom Antony was compared. Barbara Hiltmann (Musée cantonal d’archéologie et d’histoire, Lausanne) will discuss publication Les cistophores de Marc Antoine: un monnayage hellénistique en contexte romain, the propaganda conveyed by the cistophori, and place the coins in the political, military, and socio-economic context of the Asiatic province at the end of the Roman Republic.
