    I live 85 miles from the Canadian border and have this Tecsun loop aerial. At 1 am eastern time I took my tiny Sangean am fm portable and started tuning around using the Tecsun loop. For a year or so I have been hearing a Spanish speaking station on 530 khz on my Icom and Yaesu rigs and the 75 meter coaxial fed windom so, just to find out if it would be there with the tiny Sangean and the Tecsun loop I tuned the radio to 530khz and peaked the loop and it was there. No US or Canadian stations are there so as I rotated it the north south orientation nailed it. The signal was the best I had ever heard it! It was Cuba and they were playing some great music. The signal was so good I listened to the music for about 90 minutes or so with hardly any QSB at all. On or about that frequency at the east west orientation there was another station there. The loop had nulled out Cuba almost completely so now I want to eventually nail that other station which is due east somewhere towards Europe. You guys should try 530 khz and listen for Cuba and then for that station due east. Probably Europe but until I can get a World Radio TV Handbook I will have to keep guessing!

      Hi! Pointing to Europe, and close to 530kHz? It's 540kHz, isn't it? If so, you are receiving the station MR1 Radio Kossuth of the Hungarian National Radio network. This is our last remaining AM broadcast frequency, transmitting with 2MW. The transmitter has been completely replaced recently, the new transimitter is in service since 11.27.2017. It replaced a 40 years old 2MW Soviet tube transmitter, the new one is a solid-state Canadian Nautel with five 400kW units. They also kept the old tube transmitter, as a spare for the new one, it can be re-utilized in minutes, if necessary.

    I recently bought one of these Tecsun Loop antennas and it performs far above my expectations. I use it plugged into the Hi Z input on an SDRplay RSP2 through SDRuno software on a laptop. The feature I really appreciate is the filtering of interference outside of the tuned frequency range. It is really fun for pulling in distant or low-power signals by turning the knob and physically moving the loop.

    I have recently purchased the AN100 model which is electrically identical and it is surprisingly effective for its size. I have built 2ft square loop antenna which works very well but is too large and unwieldy to use inside the house. My Degen DE1103 radio is capable of receiving Transatlantic BC band DX at my home in southern UK, using only its ferrite antenna around sunrise when conditions are right, but the AN100 can boost things a little more. Received WTNI on 1640 from Mississippi on 2 mornings a few days ago.

    Thanks Larry, found a "Terk Advantage" loop off of Ebay and gave it a try on the AM band with the Satellite 800.
    They do work and a S/N ratio goes way up like your demonstration shows. I like your the vintage Zenith radio! 73s

    When I was a teenager, I would take my 6 transistor radio outside and stand beneath the nearby high tension lines. I could pick up east coast stations from northern California. The same principal. Different scale.

    I have 2 of these loops and they really work great! You can take 2 of these loops and set them in a straight line with each other close to a am radio and they will work better also, you just have to experiment with the distance between the first and second loop for best reception.

    I am just writing this to let you know how good your presentation style is. You don't try to be a comedian (whilst failing miserably) like some other presenters, your are not boring like so many (surprisingly) popular others, you don't feel that you have to use all the tricks your video software can do and your delivery is fluid without loads of "ums" and "ahhs". Plus you actually seem to know what you are talking about. This video was am absolute pleasure to watch so naturally, I have subscribed to this channel.

    I haven’t used my loop in a few years. It does not look like yours but it works great. I hook it up to my Onkyo stereo receiver. I never used it on my communications receiver because of the noise. I’m so glad I sold that thing. Well anyway, I got some great DX in the month of November right after the time change. These were daytime stations in the south in the central time zone an hour before they go off the air. I still have my log book. Another great thing about my loop is by tuning, turning or both, I can nullify stations. One time I nullified WIP in Philadelphia and got WIOD in Miami! I’m going to hook my antenna tonight just to see what’s out there. It will be a clear, cold night; perfect conditions for DXing the AM band. During the summer it’s a waste of time. Keep up the great job with your videos.

      Thanks, yes, this is about the best time of year for AM band DX. I have been tuning around and hearing stations I have not heard in a long time. That is what I like about the loops, you can zero in on the station and get rid of some of the noise many times also..

    thank for the reply radioguy..im also very impressed how it picks signals simply without any external power input..it impressed thomas henry morray as well who went on to make history building controversial energy devices in the 1930s ..please link it up to a led and see if it can light up any simple led with the right capacitance resonance with relation to the coil winding

    Again, very dependent on the radio used. I've found that very small radios benefit the most. The small ferrite bar needs a boost. I own two, and the improvement is quite impressive. Great video!

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I just bought the Tecsun antenna and it didn't really do anything for my reception. What I am wondering is if I could make one that is better .... meaning if you increase the number of loops does it work better? What kind of wire did you use? How many turns. Where did you get the capacitor and what range is it. Personally, I like you home made version of this better than the Tecsun, it looks cool.

      Supposedly you should be able to get one of these to work on lw by adding capacitance

    This looks really useful. Would it work with the NOAA weather radios too? I have a KA500.

      This would not work for NOAA weather broadcasts on the VHF band, this loop is only designed for the AM radio band but for that it works very well.

    they didn't connect any cable how possible?🤔

    I have an 80ft external long wire, do have any thoughts on how these small passive loop antennas compare?

      Many times they work better since you can null out noise sources and point them in the direction of the station also.

    Hi,
    I'm a bit confused regarding the orientation of the antenna towards the station.
    If the station is directly south of me, should the 'open' ends of the loop facing S-N or should they be facing E-W?
    Thank you!

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The open ends should face E-W. The loop picks the signal up from the wire ends if that makes sense. So if you were to put a yardstick along side of the loop touching both ends you would be pointing the the right direction, however, it is the same off of both ends, bi-directional. Hope that helps? I know, it used to be confusing for me so let me know if this helps.

      @@RadioHamGuy That helps alot. I understand now. Thanks again! 🙂

    Does it also work for shortwave?

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The ones you see here will only work for the AM broadcast band. There are others that are larger that can work for shortwave however.

    does this work for SW too?

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This one only works for the AM band

  • @BobJones-dq9mx
    @BobJones-dq9mx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can be used for SW?

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      These will only work across the AM broadcast band, they can be built for SW bands however but different dimensions than this.

    Hi. Very cool. Do you know if this will boost an old tube radio that has an internal loop already? I see you tested a tube radio in this clip.

      I have tried it on a few radios I have like you are talking about and found that it does still help in that situation also.

    If the loop antenna larger, would it pull in more stations?

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A larger size loop does generally work better, it would probably require less turns of wire also.

    could i make one with no dial?

    • @RadioHamGuy
      @RadioHamGuy  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Connor Baker You would need the tuning capacitor to change the frequency but as for the dial itself, it would not have to be on there, it is just a way to tune the capacitor and have a relative indication. By dial I am talking the knob itself.
