    Hey everyone! I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look of my first few days of the game jam.
    Thank you all for watching and participating in the game jam, I can't wait to see what everyone develops.

      Matthew, where you create your materials? In Blender and export as fbx or literally in UE4?

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So when testing I use materials in UE4. When I'm moving into proper development I like to use a texture atlas so everything takes color from one material reducing the amount of set pass calls in the scene.

      Matthew Palaje I have a question about how 2 fix the templates on unreal engine 4. Whenever I open a template where the details and world settings tabs should be, they aren't there and whenever I click on an object in the world outline it just zooms in on it rather than open its details. This problem doesn't happen whenever I open a blank project so I'm not sure how to fix this
      (Edit): BTW love u r vids they've been very helpful

      You'll get one down in no time! Still have weeks before the jam ends :)
      It was a top priority for this project but usually I spend time prototyping before art.

    Quality! Really love this behind the scenes, painted a very clear picture of your workflow and tools. I love seeing that facet for any given art.
    Thanks for sharing! And I hope this game jam goes well for everyone. :)

    Great advice Matthew! Thank you for the video.
    My thought process is pretty similar to yours. I did 'steal' your micro design document template, since my documents are always tooooo long and yours just seemed so simple and 'to the point' lol. Thank you!
    I haven't done any of my models yet though. Still working on my prototype with basic geometry. I should have it done by this weekend though. Then I'll move on to modelling next week!

    I used to use Sourcetree (with Bitbucket) for my version control but found GitKraken (with Git) much nicer to use. I always found stashes and merge conflicts awkward in Sourcetree which resorted in my going to the command line a lot.
    Loving the art style you've got so far, can't wait to see how your project turns out.

    Man!!! this looks great. I decided to try my best and join in the jam this month. (never really completed anything) its pretty intimidating if i'm to be honest. though it is very cool to watch everyone's progress updates. Hope i can produce something at least playable! :D

      That's great Vincent! You're already ahead of a lot of people. So many people only think about joining but you've already started.

    You should make the light effect that Tunic (fox game) has.
    That game looks amazing.
    Yours is going on the right direction, it looks cool.
    Why is it that on this day and age, we look at low poly graphics and find them cool. So simple and so cool.

  • @AlvaroBelmonte
    @AlvaroBelmonte 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Bitbucket is not used to work with a crew as long as two guys can work on the same file at the same time. The best repository to work with ue4 is perforce as long as you can lock the files you are working on and nobody can edit those files until you unlock them.

  • @Norbingel
    @Norbingel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I love the look of your games Matthew. They're in a style I really like and they remind me how crappy the graphics in my own game attempts are

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That comment went from really awesome to sad haha. Just continue to experiment and play around with art assets. It took me a while to figure out how to use lighting/ post processing to make art assets look really nice.
      If you can get some free assets, make a mini scene and try make it look good with lighting/post processing. Make another scene, try again and continue doing this for a while. You'll get really good :)

    • @Norbingel
      @Norbingel 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol. Thank you for the kind words. Yeah I plan to look up lighting and post processing when I progress enough into the current game I'm making. But while I do do some drawing, color has never been my strong suit.

    • @PixelBlight

      Blue Shard Games I would recommended learning basic git first, just grasp the concept at the very least :) then using the ui will be so much easier to use.
      There are plenty of git tutorials out there. It's not the most fun thing but if you ever gonna work with software it's a must

    • @blueshardgames4941
      @blueshardgames4941 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I will definitely look into it for my next project :)

    • @Ti133700N
      @Ti133700N 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Git is amazing but it's meant to be used for text-based files and not binaries (although if you can setup LFS it might not be as bad). For game creation, using Git for the game source code is a great idea. For storing assets, you might want to use another source control software such as Perforce. If you are just messing around and making a game prototype with small assets and you want to learn how to use Git and SourceTree, then go ahead and use it for everything, it will work just fine. Just be aware that the repo could grow quickly and trying to merge commits might be more difficult if you are working with multiple people and large assets.

    Our group is making a game that really just has the building blocks, when should we have a prototype out???

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So usually you want the prototype up straight away. Once you have a macro design figured out and what core features are required you make a prototype.
      Rami Ismail has a great rule which is the 4:44 rule, I discussed it in this video here: th-cam.com/video/cBPYCmjDNkM/w-d-xo.html

    Awesome dev log, learned a few new things, looking forward to your udemy course. If your celshader turns out to be successful, please share the creation process with us, I find your method of teaching easy to understand and can follow. I've dabbled in udk and ue4 when it comes to celshading, but could never archive what I was going for. It'll be interesting to see if your shader will be material based or post process based, looking forward to that too.

    Hi Matthew, I really enjoyed the video! If you could do another one on making a character in blender like you showed that would be awesome! or a video on post processing, because that's what makes a game look beautiful right? If you already have videos on this i'll check but if not here's some requests xp, thx

      I released a series of simple character creation videos last weekend :)

  • @old8768
    @old8768 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The fox game is Secrets and Legends, the creator uses The unity engine and uses an assets they created called Probuilder, there is free version to his as well as a paid one. I use the free one, which is great for prototyping maps but also to build them. A lot easier than blender if you not use to modeling enviorments (i.e walls, stairs, rocks, paths, and more).
    Not trying to sound like and ads men but you get my gest. He made me laugh when he said the little fox that runs around so I had to let y'all know what it was!!!

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ahh thank you haha for some reason I really struggle remembering the name of the game but I never forget the character. So whenever I google search for it I type in "Unity Zelda game with fox" haha.

    This was very inspiring. However, I am still not able to start working on my project due to procrastination. :(

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      So if I'm having a day where I get side tracked or procrastinate a lot I use a timer technique.
      Before I start I put on a long playlist of music so I'm not focused on changing songs etc.. I close any messaging services [Discord, Facebook etc] and I use an online timer. I set it for 2 hours and i focus on the task at hand.
      Hope that helps!

    Very interesting video. Personally I prefer using TortoiseSVN and a RaspberryPi that allow me to check out and commit and do all that stuff in ue4.
    if you manage to make work the cell-shading functionality, did you plan a tuto on how to recreate one ?
    In the last game jam, you did in your first prototype a portal. Do you have some link I could check to try to recreate mine ?

    i love watching matthew's videos, but tbh i still just as much as i did 3 week ago which is next to nothing. i HAVE the programs and tools, i have the drive, but i honestly have no idea what it is i'm doing. i love watching the videos, cause the inspire me and others, but i'm soooo lost and lack the proper fundamentals to truly understand what it is that i need to do to even begin. If anyone knows a teacher, that could go step-by-step on how to understand just the basics (i mostly just want to make assests in blender, but i have zero understanding on how to even make anything) i'd be willing to pay. I would prefer if Matthew was my teacher, but i rather he focus on his work and videos, cause we need him :)

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting. I think a mentor would be useful but I think there is another problem here.
      You said you have no idea what you're doing. I believe it's because you don't have a goal so you can't possibly know what you're doing.
      Without a goal you have no plan, without a plan you'll be stuck for another 3 weeks or longer haha.
      I'd recommend figuring out a goal so you know where you're headed. I'm assuming you are starting out now, if I was starting out I would do a game a week challenge. Really simple you just say I'm going to make a really small game every week. This will force you to get familiar with your tools.
      If you can do that for a while you'll get better at coming up with ideas, using tools, you'll be more disciplined and you'll build more confidence.
      From there you can start making a game a month and one day work on a bigger project.
      Don't over think anything and watch this video one day:
      th-cam.com/video/V2PP3p4_4R8/w-d-xo.html
      One other thing. Just start, if you don't start no amount of 1 on 1 teaching or mentors or motivation will help you. Also no one knows what they are doing when they start, just look at the start of my TH-cam channel haha. Only recently have I figured out a direction for this channel.
      Good luck with everything :)

      Matthew youre so cool dude, thank you for always supporting and pushing newcomers. youre right that i dont have a goal, i just have all these ideas and dreams, but every advice you give i take to heart and use it to just try. i promise i will have something by the end of this game jam, even if i dont win, i will give my all

  • @JoshuaDuff
    @JoshuaDuff 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    HI Matthew! Just wondering, why UE4? Any reason you choose it for this project? I've often though Unity is better for simple graphics and UE4 for photo realism but I'm wanting to create a game with a low poly art style. Which would you recommend? (I have used both engines)

    • @LegendaryWizardPS
      @LegendaryWizardPS 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right there, Unity is definitely better for low graphics and fictional graphics, while UE4 is mainly used for graphics like in games like GTA V, Rise Of The Tomb Raider etc.

    I need to try out that project management software, just maybe not for this jam. I really like trello so I'll stick with it for now. Is anyone else finding the 30 second theme really hard? My plan to work with it is that levels reset after 30 seconds if you don't complete them but you slowly discover things through each play-through that you'll need to complete it in 30 seconds.

      Hey Pscyborg! I developed a video discussing this topic. I hope you find it useful :)
      th-cam.com/video/3IW3kAGcLM0/w-d-xo.html
      Some extra advice.
      If you're starting out focus on creating things that you want to make. So say you want to create a first person shooter. Don't think of it as you're making a game like Counter Strike or Call Of Duty. Break it down and make something really small. A simple wave based first person shooter.
      Then if you want to have skills in multiple areas you can make a model in blender and make that the enemy for your game :)
      I hope this was useful!

      You could also go for 2D which is also a great choice.
      I made a video here on how to use MagicaVoxel, hope this helps!

    Hey Matthew, only been watching your videos for a day but absolutely love the content.I'm just curious. I've entered the competition (With Low Experience). I have watched the video, however I am still confused on what you mean by 30 Second Quest. Appreciate if you responded soon 👌

      You have 30 seconds to complete a task, you can be creative and twist the theme.

    Your character has a Hyper Light Drifter look. Not a rip off but it looks like an accidental convergent design

    +Matthew Palaje, your vids are awesome. I started to create a game, but me and my teammates couldn't get the meaning of the theme "30-second quest". Could you or someone please help us : ) Thank you in advance

      Marshal Iftee it means that a player has to solve a Quest within 30 seconds. so a game Task that lasts 30 seconds. destroy all Blocks in the level max time 30sec

      Are you sure brother? Cause a bit ago asked this to the host CrowdForge and they said that game duration doesn't matter

    • @marshaliftee9009
      @marshaliftee9009 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They also said that "You can do whatever game you want as long as it's related to the theme some way."

    • @MatthewPalaje
      @MatthewPalaje  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So there is no "meaning" haha.
      A game jam theme is meant to be interpreted anyway you want. Brain storm a bunch of ideas that revolve around the theme or even try incorporate the theme as the main mechanic. I'd recommend watching this video on how to come up with creative ideas: th-cam.com/video/L1kbrlZRDvU/w-d-xo.html

    Instead of going through LUT's why don't you make your own in for example Photoshop?!
