  • In this video, I'm repotting my only cymbidium.
    Please note that there is no mention of the 'F' word in the title. You can choose which 'F' word I'm referring to after you've watched the video - who knows, you may think of more than one?
    Also, for those waiting for the 'Plant Give-Away Draw', I'm hoping to film that tomorrow (Sunday).

    I just bought several LARGE potted Cyms at an estate sale. I told her i would take good care of her mother's orchids.... she sold them to me for a steal $5! Going back for more. Getting educated on them, i can't wait.
    Thank you for the great advice.

    Despite the serious content there were still moments for a good laugh. Thanks Roger.
    I hope your daughter watches this video. She might not be surprised to see what you do for her but certainly touched by the gesture of her loving father.
    Have a nice Sunday !

      If you search on ebay for 'deep plastic pots' you should find some.

    Cymbidiums are my absolute favorite orchid. Alas, I don't have any as they are too big for me right now with my current situation of moving back and forth between homes. If I ever see the minis another viewer spoke of, I may change my mind. Good luck. I hope it lives and blooms once more.

      Some of the mini-cymbidiums still have quite large blooms and often have a lot more of them per spike. They still have the range of colours too.

    Thanks for sharing Roger! Very considerate of you to keep it, sorry about the previous owner.
    I remember it one time in the past you were telling quite enthusiastically, you don't grow them, they are just too big for you. And I just saw yesterday a very nice bunch of Holland Cymbis at one of my favorite flower retailers which were quite small compared to the general ones. Some Sharry Babies are bigger than those were. The thought cross my mind, well, even Roger could grow these minis, they are really windowsill sized. And look at the title, you reporting a Cymbidium. I honestly wondered you went and bought one of these Holland mini ones.
    ( Liked the glass you after-sterilized your tools in :):)
    Have a nice one, looking forward to the next update and the announcement of the happy winners!
    BR,
    Maria

      I don't think this one will get too big so for obvious reasons it's worth a try.

    Sad story about your daughter's neighbour. Keep my fingers crossed for that Cymbidium, I am sure he would have liked that. And the blooms are so nice, so it is really worth a try.

    Oh no. The dreaded F word! I hope the cymbidium rallies, Roger. Cymbidius really are tough cookies so I hope it does well for you. I notice you have the same problem as me - when repotting I never quite mix enough bark! Thanks for sharing.

      PS How is that ebay cymbidium that you sold do in the end?

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I normally get some left over but that was a 'big' pot! The guy that cymbidium came from kept his orchids in different rooms and always took them to the sink/drainer to water (not shared water) so I think this one has had the 'F' stuff for some time and is still growing a new growth and roots so it may 'push through it' - with the help of the systemic fungicide it's getting every chance.

    • @GardeningatDouentza
      @GardeningatDouentza 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As you know, your experience with cymbidiums is not unusual. They can survive all sorts, even heavy frost, and they are vigorous growers. It's the getting them to reflower that often defeats.

      If it does, it will probably be in about 1 year's time. Getting it back to full health is the main thing.

    Hi. Could you tell me which type of active ingredient is in the fungicide you're using to control the fusarium please? I've just chucked a newly bought orchid with fusarium (that was annoying, don't expect it in a new plant) and I have a few malingering orchids I've been nursing that now I feel like spraying just as a precaution as perhaps the fusarium may be the cause of the malingering (phals, so can't cut rhizome) Thanks, Jennifer

      The label says "A ready to use aqueous formulation containing 0.125g/l trifloxystrobin and 0.125g/l tebuconazole" if that makes any sense? It also says "Contains 5-chloro-2-methyl-isothiazol-3-one/2-methyl-isothiazol-3-one" which makes even less sense? They can be googled to get more info. They 'can' be dangerous to both 'us' and the environment so MUST be used and disposed of with extreme care. The actual product is Bayer Fungus Fighter Plus.

    • @finflwr
      @finflwr 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, it does. I've got one with one of those ingredients. Did you find any confirmation those ingredients will target fusarium specifically? Thanks : )

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but it took ages and loads of reading. The details were in papers dealing mainly with 'crops' rather than specifically about orchids. They did have 'risks' and were classed as 'medium' in the low/medium/high categories for environmental damage.

      I still have the Cymbidium - it lives outside in the warmer weather. It has bloomed every year during the Winter when it is in the growroom.

    fifififiusarium lol, are you going to mention me on every repotting video? I hope the plant will do well, even is infected I see no signs of slowing down because of that, the root system was bigger than the plant itself and you will have new growths too.

    Cimbidiums will not bloom if kept indoors all year...must go through cold spell. I bring indoors or garage when temps get down to close 40 Fahrenheit..no need to sterilize, as they will grow in dirt...easiest orchid to grow..

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There are many types of Cymbidiums including some warm growers - they still need a drop in temp but not a 'chill' - there are even some that are epiphytes. This is my only one and it will go outside in the Spring and get watered/fed very well through until the cold nights start. The room it's in at the moment is unheated, and it's on a south facing window sill so bright light and cool temps. As it's got fusarium, it's not getting anywhere near any of my other orchids.

      It's about to 'come in' for the Winter so I'll film it in the next couple of days - it just gets 'forgotten' as it spends a lot of it's time outside. It either has two spikes, a spike and a new growth or 2 new growths - not sure which yet. I'll have a closer look when I bring it inside for the Winter.

    I didn't notice, did you spray it with fungicide?

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to take it out in the back garden as it's quite a strong chemical but the whole plant got sprayed including the roots for maximum effect. I'll have to spray it twice more - in a week and then two weeks after that.

    • @marygorchidsmore2058
      @marygorchidsmore2058 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      So is it doing OK? hopefully you'll do a follow up?

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Far too early to tell - it'll need a couple of months with no set-backs and the new growth pushing on continuously. I'll do a follow-up in the spring if it's not under the hedge.

    Is this a plastic or clay pot? Does it matter with these?

    • @GrowingOrchidswithRoger
      @GrowingOrchidswithRoger  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know very little about Cymbidiums - I don't really want to grow these but was asked to look after this one for 'sentimental reasons'. It's a plastic deep pot - I do know that they prefer a deeper narrow pot.

      And imo this sterile ultra-clean world people live in is EXACTLY why their immune systems don't work anymore and there is so much illness around. The expression is 'eat more dirt' - I don't think it's supposed to be taken literally though. My way of life, my choice of fresh food and plenty of fresh air means I don't get colds, I've only had flu once when I was about 20, I don't get headaches, I don't get anything. I like it that way. Our immune system needs work - it needs something to do a bit like a muscle otherwise when it's really needed it doesn't do the job - that's how vaccinations work. So no pills, no processed food, and stay mobile - we will see who lives longest? I was careful to wash-up after handling that orchid and it is separate from the others - I was also VERY careful with the fungicide. I have been fine the way I work and still am - I don't own any gloves and have no plans on getting any. Thanks.
