    1. Style of photography (candid documentary, traditional/posed, natural light)
    2. Look at their portfolio to see their style/editing
    3. Does the photographer offer an engagement shoot? (Photos for invitation/save the dates BUT an opportunity to work before the wedding day and get to know how they work)
    4. Look through their body of work. (Instagram/social media)
    5. Has the photographer that you’re interested in worked at the venue that you’re getting married at? (would they be willing to do a site visit before the wedding day?)
    6. Do they have insurance and back up in case something fails?
    7. How long will they be working for on the day? (5 to 8 hrs is common. Arrive as you’re getting ready and leave after the first dance)
    8. It’s nice to provide food but a lot require a HOT meal in their contract.
    9. Will they have a second shooter on the day and are they included in the fee? If you want an extra shooter can they add one?
    10. Do they need you to put together a shot list? (A list of who you want photograph together)
    11. How will you receive your photographs? (USB stick, CD, online portal to access them, JPEG)
    12. Is an album included?
    13. Does your photographer edit photos?
    14. Who has the rights to the photos? (Personally only work with the ones that offer you the rights so you can print as many as you want for any reason)

As a long time photographer, including weddings, I agree with most of your questions but I don't agree with question #14. As a photographer, I make my money selling photos, and as a photographer I automatically own the copyright to every image I make. I've never in my career given rights to anyone so they can print as many of my images as they want. That to me is what has helped the decline of prices in wedding photography--people willing to give away all the images to the bride and groom (along with a lot of people who are not skilled enough to shoot professionally). I offer several packages, some include an album or albums others do not. Some include an engagement shoot, others do not. All my contracts include the amount of photos my clients will receive and all the photos they receive are post processed--they do not get a CD, online portal, or thumb drive. None of my contracts include giving a client the right to my photos. If they want rights to images other wedding photographers may provide them with those rights--not me. To me it's like a store giving away merchandise--they sell their merchandise in order to stay in business. Now, in fairness, this will most likely limit your clients to more high end clients, but it's ok, if you do good work you'll keep busy and not give away your work. I've had a couple of local photo labs call me and tell me they had a customer there with an image they wanted copied, but the lab realized it was a professional image and wanted to know if I knew the person and was it my image. In both cases, it was my image and I said it was okay for them to make one copy. In both cases the lab wanted me to fax them the permission to do that on my letterhead with my signature, which I did. I'm sure other labs weren't as ethical but to me my copyright on an image says that I own that image. I also register the images I give my clients with the U.S. Copyright Office--you can register them in batches for a set fee. My contract also stipulates that they cannot publish any of my images in any publication without my written consent. They may put my images on line, if they include my studio name. I would recommend all wedding photographers do this--this used to be standard operating procedures until everyone became a wedding photographer.

Hi Lauren I came across this video on my TH-cam feed. My wife and I are wedding photographers and are doing all of what you’re suggesting couples should ask.
This is great advice for any couples planning their future wedding day.

I am very curious what photographers use SIM cards
Also: if you need to ask your photog if he has insurance and backup gear, you hired an amateur. These are things EVERY professional puts on their website. Also: avoid the stuck up snobs that call their price "your investment" and don't even mention the amount. You're hiring someone to come take pictures. Not Rembrandt to do the dining room wall for you. Beware of the snobs, the arrogant dickheads and the wanna-be's.

Visiting the wedding location is completely unnecessary for a good wedding photographer. Begin looking at the portfolio, if you like the style, make an appointment.

I 100% agree. I get asked this by brides and they think it’s a deal breaker. Just ask your wedding photographer for examples of their work. Having a barn wedding, ask for examples of barn weddings. Getting married in a Manor House in autumn, as for examples. It’s also good ask what the photographer does to familiarise themselves with the venue. When I arrive at a wedding, I always say hello to the wedding co-ordinator. I compare their timetable to the one which was provided for me by the client and I walk around the grounds for my own inspiration for photos.

what is the etiquette around family/friends who are v good amateur photographers and you’d like them to take a few documentary style snaps on the big day as well as a professional? Would it put a lot of professional photographers “noses out of joint”? Is it rude or common place? Thanks as ever for the fab advice xx

Stomach Kind. Having some extra semi professional shots is always an added bonus. However I would just advice that they don’t get in the way of your paid professional. 📸

Is it rude to ask to see all the photos? And pic out which ones are edited rather than let them choose which ones to edit?
