I am so happy to have discovered more Steve Marriott fans. I love your reactions and have just subscribed. And thank you to James for recommending this tune. It is my 3rd favorite Pie performance behind "I Wonder" and "I Know You're So Good for Me" both very soulfully performed yet so different from each other. To answer your specific questions - When Humble Pie first formed, they were Steve Marriott, former guitarist & lead singer from the wonderful Small Faces; Peter Frampton, a teen idol from the popular band Herd,: Greg Ridley from the lesser known but respected band Spooky Tooth, and lastly a 16 yr drummer, Jerry Shirley, whom Steve had discovered at 14 and mentored. All the music newspapers of the time were hailing them as the new "SuperGroup". This horrified the band as they worried expectations would be too high, so Steve came up with the name HUMBLE PIE so that it would show that THEY didn't think they were a supergroup. How does one know they can sing like that? In Steve's case, it appears to be a God given gift. His mother writes of sending 6/7 yr old Steve off to an early matinee movie of "Wizard of Oz". By evening, he hadn't returned, they found him all alone, on his way home belting out every word from every song in the movie, which he learned from watching it over and over! His father ( a pub pianist) gave 8/9 yr old Steve a harmonica and a ukelele which he learned and went aroud the streets earning pennies singing. At 13, he was one of the children hired to play the Artful Dodger in the London stage production of "Oliver". From there he went to a prestigious theater school and got parts in movies, TV and stage productions. At 15, he fronted a band "The Moments" which released several singles, then at 17 he met Ronnie Lane and Kenney Jones with whom he formed the Small Faces. The SMALL FACES were a brilliant band who produced hit after hit and tore up the clubs with scorching live performances. Steve was HIGHLY respected by his peers -Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were huge fans and Steve was the first person Jimmy asked to be vocalist for Zep (he said no thank you), Both Roger Daltry (Who) and David Bowie have called Steve the best soul/rock singer Britain ever produced. Many more accolades from critics and other musicians. After 3 years, Steve wanted to rock and quit to form HUMBLE PIE. The PIE were together about 5 years, the fell apart due to exhaustion from constant touring and drug abuse on everyones part. Steve's life after was a slow downward spiral success wise, and he spent his last years playing small venues and pubs, which he claimed to enjoy more than playing huge venues with hundreds of thousands of fans. Sadly he died in 1991 at aged 44 in an accidental house fire. Rest his soul.... Sorry for the legnthy post, I'm just a passionare fan ✌
More pie please. These guys were my favorite band back in my college days. I think most people would agree that they are among the very best of the British Blues era. They didn’t get much radio play here in the states, but music lovers found them.
Back in the 70s these guys were stadium kings. They opened once for mega stars Grand Funk and some people thought the Pie wiped the floor with the headliners. They came from several UK bands, Steve Marriott was in the Small Faces, Peter Frampton (original line up) was in The Herd, Greg Ridley was in Spooky Tooth, Clem Clempson was in Colosseum, Jerry Shirley played drums on a Syd Barrett album but basically started with Humble Pie. When you can wail like Marriott his size only makes it more incredible. More slices of the Pie please !
Yes, under-rated and under-appreciated, but many of us loved them. Glad that you appreciate them! As others have mentioned, you will love "I Don't Need No Doctor" and "Thirty Days In The Hole". Steve Marriott was beyond compare
I went to my first concert at 14yo..... It was Foghat, Humble Pie, and Boz Scags. Humble Pie was the highlight and who I really wanted to see. I'm 66yo now and still love Humble Pie.
Steve was a child actor in the musical Olivier, going onto a theatre arts school, working consistently in film, television and radio, but tired of acting and went back to his musical roots as a founding member of Small Faces (they were all short men) and then starting Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. In theatre you need to project your voice so everyone can hear, no doubt helping his ability of being up front with his vocals, you can't miss him. April 20th 1991 he was overcome with smoke inhalation due to a fire (believed to be started by a cigarette) in his home. It was a crushing loss to his family & fans. R.I.P. Steve, thanks for the recorded trail you left.
Good observation regarding his theater training and voice projection. Here is another odd factoid I stumbles upon that might have something to due with his musical abilities: In a Mojo magazine (I think) article, Jerry Shirley said that one day Steve motioned him over and said "Look at this". He had Jerry look down his open mouth and Jerry said he was shocked to see that the area between the back of his throat and tounge was cavernous, much larger than other peoples throats. I am not musically trained, but I wonder if this might have contributed to his "bullhorn voice" ?!? Of course he also had amazing control and range.
Great story, thanks for sharing. I turned down buying tickets for NYC venue when I was in college (1971 supporting their Rock On album tour), truly my loss. I believe their Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore album is one the best live albums, at least in the top ten Live albums ever.@@cindyfalstrom7231
You folks are the greatest! Y’all turned me on to music I was surprised by! I’m sick because I was born in ‘66 …. Should have known this! Thank you ! 😎🥰🥰👍🏼
Other rippin rockers by them are Four Day Creep, Stone Cold Fever, Up Our Sleeves, The Fixer, Sweet Peace and Time, Live With Me, Silver Tongue and of course I Don't Need No Doctor from Live at the Fillmore. They just tear the place apart.
Steve was lead singer and lead guitarist of The Small Faces and wanted to bring in Peter Frampton to share the lead roles, but the rest of the band refused. After Steve left the band, they asked Peter Frampton to join, but he joined up with Marriot in Humble Pie instead. Meanwhile, The Small Faces recruited a singer (Rod Stewart) and a lead guitarist (Ronnie Wood) and became The Faces as Rod and Ronnie were taller!!
Humble Pie is very underrated. Growing up in the Washington DC area in the 80s, they got some play on classic rock radio, so I'm glad I got hear them to explore their discography further. Steve Marriott was a one of a kind. Small Faces is just as legendary. RIP
Biggest hit was "I Don't Need No Doctor" the "live" version. Peter Frampton was on lead guitar. This I believe is also a Ray Charles tune. You guys are great and a lot of fun!!! Cheers!
That's the way it is in music,. There are great artists and bands who are mainly known by adoring fans. Most people just knew the songs played on the radio but music fans bought the albums. RUSH wasn't an airplay band for years but had a very large fan base. Iron Maiden pretty much became one of the most revered bands in the world simply through albums and touring, UFO is another band that had little airplay but a major fan base. Many of the bands that are widely known now, had major fan bases who felt betrayed when the bands produced hit albums with songs that made them accessible to the mainstream audience. Metallica is one of the best examples. Hardcore fans don't want to share their bands with the masses. 😂 The band and the music is the real fans private treasure. Some of my favorite Humble Pie songs are on On To Victory which is virtually unknown and I like it that way. One of the benefits of great artists not being mainstream is being able to see them in smaller venues during their prime. I saw Judas Priest open for UFO in a 2000 seat auditorium before Judas Priest hit it big. That concert was legend. 🙂
Can i suggest Going back to where it all started with "the small faces"...all or nothing ...tin soldier ... Itchycoo park ...lazy sunday afternoon ....all four members of the band were genuinely great musicians...and damn they had style....so cool !!!!...you really stumbled on gold when you found Steve Marriott
& Yes you are correct they seem to be underrated cuz like ya said i just recently started to get to know **MyCutieBallOEnergy&RawTalentStevieMariottBabe** like bout a year or so ago i had heard of the name **Humble Pie** but ONLY from the movie **Almost Famous** & once i found them then i find that he is also the Lead in **Small Faces** OMG just ALL of it **Unbelievable** his **Charisma** his **Voice** his **Guitar** **Genius** i will forever more **Cherish** him like i do **MyBelovedOtherWorldlyLedZeppelin** **ForeverInfinity&Beyond** indeed! **Thank YOU**
We knew about Stevie in the UK in all his bands but just like Nightwish they were never as well known in the USA so didn't reach large parts of the World.
OH & from a documentary i watched on **Small Faces** i am pretty it was they said that over in the UK **SteveMarriott** was so BIG they were selling **Wigs** of his **Hairstyle** back in the day! How freakin **Wild** is THAT!!! sooo He did have a **Huge** impact over in the UK for sure back then so YAY!!! OH & also i think i said this in my last post to **Black Coffee** reaction that he was one of the Artists being considered for being the Lead Singer for **MyBelovedOtherWorldlyLedZeppelin** before they found **MyBelovedRobertPlant** so very wild to think bout THAT as well heh smh
In 1966, Steve Marriott with his former band The Small Faces released a single called "You Need Loving" - th-cam.com/video/tp0jZ4BGuDw/w-d-xo.html Listen to that, then go listen again to Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" from three years later, and tell me who Robert Plant was learning his chops from back in the day.
My two favoite songs are also on this album - "I Wonder" & "You're So Good For Me". Two different styles, yet both brilliant - hell, the whole album is brilliant....
👍 RIP Stevie. Thank You. "It's blues time ... I'm talkin' about those $15.95 'Come See Me At Midnight' Stockings..." ZZ TOP - Fool For Your Stockings & Nasty Dogs and Funky Kings th-cam.com/video/wT3Kh-GgMbU/w-d-xo.html
Humble Pie should have been better known. Their manager was accused of taking Humble Pie's money and using it to advance Peter Frampton's solo career. There was lots of shady band managers during this time. Steve and the other members never really earned what they should have being the amazing live band they were.
Here's a performance by The Small Faces. I believe Steve had more commercial success with this band as they did have 1 major international hit called Itchycoo Park. This is Tin Soldier and you get to see classic Steve Marriott moves. th-cam.com/video/6vWTtx_PxPo/w-d-xo.html
One more... their huge international hit. I remember at 14, hearing this on the AM radio about once an hour! Loved it. It was our first real experience with Steve's talent. Itchycoo Park th-cam.com/video/GDgqIyprGLM/w-d-xo.html

And of course, Peter Frampton in the original lineup.
Thank you for reminding me and repairing my memory leak ! @@jeffjohnson9911
GOOD LORD!! Could you imagine being at that performance?! ❤❤ Much love for you two! 😁
Adored but sadly often forgotten. Great to see them reintroduced to a younger audience ☮️

You know good music when you hear it just like a lot of us older people did, that's all that matters.
I read that Bill Graham, the famous concert promoter back in the 70'a, said he loved Humble Pie because they left everything on the stage.
I went to my first concert at 14yo..... It was Foghat, Humble Pie, and Boz Scags. Humble Pie was the highlight and who I really wanted to see. I'm 66yo now and still love Humble Pie.
Five Long Years with Steve Marriott and the Packet of Three live 1985 showcase's Marriott s guitar ability and Vocals

🇬🇧 Sheesh! What a voice! Incredible ❤🎶🎼🎙️
Steve Marriot was the GREATEST white British soul singer ever!
You folks are the greatest! Y’all turned me on to music I was surprised by! I’m sick because I was born in ‘66 …. Should have known this! Thank you ! 😎🥰🥰👍🏼
SO SO MANY BANDS FROM THIS ERA WERE UNDERRATED. I KNOW BECAUSE I WAS BROUGHT UP WITH THIS STYLE OF MUSIC

Steve Marriott was in The Small Faces around 1965, a great band!

(TO EAT HUMBLE PIE) MEANS TO GIVE IN AND EXCEPT DEFEAT
Biggest hit was "I Don't Need No Doctor" the "live" version. Peter Frampton was on lead guitar. This I believe is also a Ray Charles tune. You guys are great and a lot of fun!!! Cheers!
🇬🇧 Another great reaction guys. ❤🎼🎶
THE NAME OF THE BAND (HUMBLE PIE) CAME FROM AN ENGLISH SAYING, (TO EAT HUMBLE PIE) MEANING TO GIVE IN TO THE OTHÉR PERSON FROM A FALLING OUT
I saw Humble Pie in 1973 in Amsterdam. I remember it was raining the whole day😢
Steve Marriott was the singer in a band called small faces. Fantastic songs....lazy sunday afternoon. Itchookoo park. Great listens.
I am greatful I got to see Humble Pie at Cobo Arena Detroit Michigan
a dark tune. yet played with soul. it is what it is. another great review.
THE ONE YOU REALLY NEED TO PLAY BY (HUMBLE PIE) IS "NATURAL BORN BOOGIE"
Great stuff!!!❤❤❤❤
I should ad that it's specifically the "live" version from the Fillmore venue that was the hit.
My favorite Humble pie tune was BECKTON DUMPS. It's a rocker.
OhMyGosh!!! YAY!!! YESSS!!! More of **MyCutieSteveMarriottBabe** Weeeeee SO **Luvin It** Thank **YOU** ever so!!! **PixieHugz&LuvzALL** **RockON!!!**

I loved Humble Pie. Saw them in 1971 at Hyde Park.
