  • 11 Days Hiking the North West and Southern Circuit tracks of Stewart Island/Rakiura.
    Stewart Island is the 3rd largest island of New Zealand and is located 30km South of the South Island, across the Foveaux Strait.
    The North West Circuit and Southern Circuit tracks provide for challenging tramping around the island's Northern coast. The weather on Stewart Island is unpredictable with rain falling on about 275 days of the year and strong winds can be frequent.
    More information on the island and its tracks can be found here: www.doc.govt.n...

    So excited to start watching this series. I lived on the Island when I was 5 and there was the old ferry - The Wairua - before the Catamaran they have now crossing the Strait - lucky you got a good trip over😃We also had a big diesel generator to power our house and a cold range for cooking - yes I’m that old 🤣 You walked by the beach I played on across from our house in Horseshoe Bay, it’s all bush there now. Epic video, stunning views - can’t wait for part 2 😃

      That's so cool! I bet it was amazing living there, it's such a beautiful and rugged area.
      The ferry back over was rougher, spent the trip outside getting soaked, it was great fun!
      I'm glad you enjoyed it TJ, it's gets way more epic!
      Cheers.

    Great walk so far. Question 1. Is the area 'shared use'? (you said there were hunters at one hut) and Question 2. Who manages the huts?

    • @BackcountryKiwi
      @BackcountryKiwi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks!
      Yeah so, it's a national park so anyone can use it pretty much. The hunting blocks are sectioned and balloted I think for the roar which was happening while I was on the island, also the reason why I have a bright pack cover.
      There are heaps of hunters huts, managed by the Rakiura Hunter camp Trust with input from DOC.
      The other huts are managed and maintained by DOC (Department of Conservation).
      I hope that answers your questions.
      Thanks for the comment 😀
      Cheers

      @@BackcountryKiwi Thanks for taking the time to answer. You must be stuffed by the end of the day so I appreciate it. It was great to see the huts, in prime locations, open to Everyone. In Tasmania, we are facing a barrage of developers wanting to construct luxury huts for rich tourists., inside national parks, complete with helicopter landing pads. Question 3. Are bikes or horses allowed on the track you are on ?

    • @BackcountryKiwi
      @BackcountryKiwi  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CitizenJane- No worries, I enjoy answering comments 😃.
      Yeah, I hope it doesn't ruin it for everyone else. We kind of have something like that with the great walks and the big fancy lodges that are on some of them. I avoid great walks though, I'd much rather be on a rough, hardly formed track than a nice wide, well formed track but each to their own.
      No, horses and bikes aren't allowed on these tracks, you might be able to bike a bit of the great walk track, I'm not sure. But otherwise it is too rough and unformed for them.
      Cheers

    Legend 👏 So jealous. How did you manage battery charge for 11 days?

    • @BackcountryKiwi
      @BackcountryKiwi  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Dave!
      I had an extra battery for my camera and a few spare for the go pro plus a 20000mah power bank. It was close though haha, my powerbank is a few years old and I don't think its charge is what it used to be but I managed. I would have loved to do a few more timelapses and stuff but they would have drained too much battery.
