Well it was because Bette and Tina had an unbalanced relationship. Bette was shouldering a lot of responsibility, feeling very pressured to not be vulnerable, and Candace brought that out of Bette in a sexual way, created an outlet that Bette was not aware that she needed, and did not know how to create being met in her relationship with Tina. Not Tina's fault. Pretty simple and basic.
Bette was vulnerable and very insecure and scared of her relationship with Tina. It was like a safety blanket for Bette. Don’t agree with her decision but that’s a character flaw in Bette. Jennifer was not at happy with this infidelity and had trouble communicating with the star playing Candice
I read in some article that Jennifer Beals didn't want that storyline to happen that she had a hard time to play with the actress who played Candace, the carpenter.
I don't think Jennifer would ever say that about a coworker, that's just not who she is. But perhaps someone else who witnessed their process might have said it. Well, that actress is no Laurel, we know that much haha

@zenlife28 you really beleive that? not , the Miscarriage, stress at work , use to always being in control and felt she was loosing control of her life and tina was taken on her own thing to try and deal with the Miscarriage and all this put together lead bette to her distructive behavioral
