  • One of the most common grammar mistakes that my English students make is confusing the articles “a” and “the”. In this video I will provide many examples of how the articles used can really change the sentence's meaning and I will teach you the rules for saying the correct article. Use these tips to improve your grammar and become a fluent English speaker.

    Thank you so much! A very informative explanation! But maybe -- in the beginning of the video it's a little confusing (00:30) -- "a" is an indefinite article, and we don't really know what we're talking about. .. I didn't know about Starbucks, like "the venti coffee" :)
    But also -- you know -- don't we add "the" to the adjectives to make collective nouns? -- Like, the rich and the poor -- I agree with this..
    But shouldn't we just say "children need lots of fresh air" rather than "the children"? Because children is originally a noun, so in my opinion, we don't need to add the.

    Thanks a whole lot for your awesome videos!
    Keep up the good work!
    We kind of wish you would include more US idioms and slang expressions in your teaching materials, though, so we could communicate with native speakers of American English on an entirely new level.

    Another example that we omit articles is that when we are manifesting the fact(not American so hope this makes sense) like I’m going to school now, it seems wordy to add a “the” here

    Around 5:20 of the video, I heard a very vague "the" when Kayla says, "It's most natural to say Can you pick up ??? milk from the store?" When she clearly teaches us to drop the "the". 😃

      I think she's gotten confused in the part of the video. At 5:34 also she says "Can you get me water, please?" But the image reads "Can you get me the water, please?"

    Could I get to know why American is using as follows?
    'take a nap'
    Is 'nap' countable numb ?🤔
    I'm beginner with english😷

    • @rauldiaz2518
      @rauldiaz2518 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is countable but I don't think someone would say: I'm going to take two naps. It is also countable in spanish: Una siesta but people never say: dos, tres, etc. siestas.

    • @Englishwithkayla
      @Englishwithkayla  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you could say "I took two naps today" therefore it's important to say I took a nap

    • @Englishwithkayla
      @Englishwithkayla  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, it's countable but uncommon to say more than one nap, unless you're really tired 🤣

    Super confusing!! crazy.

    • @saeid9800
      @saeid9800 ปีที่แล้ว

      😂😂😂 It's easy. When you're talking about something general, use a : Could you give me a pen? It means ANY pen. When you're talking about something specific, use the: Could you give me the pen? Here you are referring to a SPECIFIC pen; for example, the pen on the table. There are also some rules you need to memorize.

    Sorry, for both “a” and “the”you used “Definite” article. Could you clarify?
    Also, it is correct if I say”Can you hand me the pencil?” Why did you say I should only say some pencils.

    • @Englishwithkayla
      @Englishwithkayla  ปีที่แล้ว

      the is the definte article. "Can you hand me the pencil?" is correct, if you are referring to more than one (plural) then you can say "can you hand me those pencils?" or if it's indefinite you can say "can you hand me some pencils?"
