KANE STAYS IN HOCKEYTOWN & YZERMAN'S QUIET FREE AGENCY - Winged Wheel Podcast - July 2nd, 2024

  • The NHL's Free Agent Frenzy was mayhem and Steve Yzerman was...relatively quiet for the Detroit Red Wings (after bringing Showtime back to Hockeytown, of course).
Tune in as we start by discussing the re-signing of Patrick Kane in Detroit, including how the deal came to be, how the bonus structure affects the cap, what this means for the Red Wings forwards including Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat, & others, & lots more (5:30).
Next, an overview on some of the massive deals across the NHL (including Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, Chandler Stephenson, Jake DeBrusk, Chris Tanev, Brandon Mantour, & so many more) before discussing Detroit's own signings: Cam Talbot, Jack Campbell, Erik Gustafsson, William Lagesson, Christian Fischer, Tyler Motte, & other small deals (11:50). How do they affect the team, replace the offense lost by Shayne Gostisbehere, David Perron, Daniel Sprong, and Jake Walman?
After that, an overall view of "The Yzerplan", Steve Yzerman's path for the team, how the cap space can be used for Lucas Raymond & Moritz Seider contracts or trades for players like Zegras or Necas, & more (50:30).
Then, an update on the Jacob Trouba situation and the trade that may not materialize (1:08:05), Pavel Datsyuk at Red Wings Development camp with the likes of Brandsegg-Nygard, Danielson, Sandin Pellikka, Augustine & others (1:19:56) before we take your questions and comments during our Overtime segment (1:22:00) - enjoy!

My issue with Yzerman right now is how his philosophy has changed. If he wanted to be patient why did he step on the gas so hard heading into the bedard draft? We could’ve gotten a top 5 pick and landed an elite level prospect. He stepped on the gas, now he’s slowing down and wants to be patient and land another top 10 pick? I would’ve just sucked continuously and slowly built than the quick jumps and already stuck in the middle

    • @DTA555.

I agree but he has to play the future that show they are ready. They need the experience and it’s time to see what they can do with real talent and not be playing for GR because SY wants to wait until they are Out of waivers and then sign them for cheap contracts like he’s been doing except for Raymond and Seider. Raymond in his first 3 seasons has more points than Larkin had in his first 3. So it’s fair to pay him and Seider who if is not on the First power play fans should be upset.

My guess would be the owners asked him to try and make the playoffs and now that the off season has been a fail and other teams getting better we’ll be back to being a higher end bottom 10 team and if we start getting injuries to Kane and someone of bigger impact even lower

Prior to any signings they were already to good to realistically be bottom 5.
They would have had to trade larkin and seider to be bad enough to compete for Bedard.
Further, for development and confidence, another season getting kicked in every night would be horrible for seider and raymond.

In the moment during live stream you dismissed it pretty quickly. Pavel's return makes you realize just how the 2008 & 2009 rosters were a one in a million miraculous example of late round drafting including Datsyuk and Zetterberg HOF. The perfect storm. Holland hit the marks with Helm, Filppula, Franzen, Hudler, Abdelkader, Ericsson, and to a degree Kronwall who was a late 1st round overaged pick. Even Dallas Drake who they let go years before and he returned. Add in holdovers from the 1990s Holmstrom, Osgood. McCarty, Maltby, and Draper.

The only thing I'm confused about is trading Walman with a sweetener. Other than that I have been in lockstep with "the Yzerplan". Once Hronek and Bertuzzi are traded, you refocus on the next realistic timeline where Raymond and Seider will be young vets welcoming in the next wave. Everything until then was about killing time and fixing the culture of the Org. None of the "bad contracts" like Chiarot will be around by that time. We saw what happened last year signing too many FAs blocks the talent that's ready to come up, now they have a path

But in the grand scheme no real loss.
I'm not upset about losing walman, no biggie.
The circumstances are concerning, it was bad asset management.
Yzerman added draft capital to move a serviceable player on a reasonable contract.
Alot of people certainly over value walman, because of two partial seasons with pretty good play paired with Mo.
But even recognizing he was over rated by many in the fan base, there is no way he is a negative asset that need a pick attached to move. A team certainly would have given a late round pick for him, but yzerman didnt do his due diligence ( so the reports say anyway )

Even Ras/Copp and Veleno should be waived if they can’t compete with a Prospect I don’t care what they are making these kids need to be looked at with Talented players during Preseason and not prospects playing against NHL players when the NHL players on the roster play the C team of the AHL players who are not even going to get to the NHL.

At some point you just have to bring in quality players to move the needle. Last year was a step in that direction (DeBrincat and Kane). So far, this year is a definite step backwards notwithstanding a future blockbuster trade. Based on a simple goal production analysis, which does have a corollary to points, they have lost net 50 goals, which will drop them back down to a bottom 10 team. I get the bad cost and term on players like Stamkos, Marchessault and Stephenson, but one of those guys would have offset the goal loss and kept us in the hunt at the end of the season. Again, at some point, you have to pay for progress which then creates momentum to draw even better players. You cannot economize your way into becoming a top 10 team ... just ask the Wild.

The Copp, Chairot, Holl deals anchored us from taking a chance on Marchessault and Stamkos, we also lost Ghost in the process. Bring up the new guys oh but the team sucks and we need a 50 goal scorer, sign the big contract oh but what about the rookies..I want the low risk contracts with my favorite players oh but we haven't filled every hole in the lineup..dobwe look to free agents Brad? Nahhh I don't like the way they spell their name..holy fck dude are your shorts cutting off the circulation to your head or do you not want to take a side in debate support?

Stamkos at that money and term wouldve been fine. He wouldve done well for us for a couple years, then we wouldve burried him in LTIR. We went into the offseason with 32 mil in cap space, and so far, we are worse than last year. If we are scared of giving guys money or term, we are never going to get a top-level free agent. Outside of a couple big trades, this will be a failure of an offseason. It will be another season where we miss the playoffs. Fun!!

Stamkos new contract is no way near fine! You want 8 mil a year wrapped up in two-four years when we are signing our younger guys and potentially someone else in free agency? Hell no. You wanna end stammers career on LTIR? Very classy. He chased a bag and by all means I’m glad he did. He isn’t worth more than 5-6 mil and that just for next season. He’ll fall off and be where he should’ve signed at 3-4 mil player after next year.

So according to what I'm hearing here. We shouldnt sign free agents close to or over 30 for anything other than 2 years or for anything more than a couple million? Seeing as most free agents are close to 30 and will want some money and term, I guess you guys dont want any free agents because, I hate to tell ya, this is what the market is and it wont change. If we arent going to adjust, we'll be sitting on our hands "waiting for the kids" for another 10 years. How mamy more years of missing the playoffs will be acceptable for you?

That walman trade keeps looking better and better 😂. Yzerman will say he got rid of it to create room for the kids and then goes and signs gustafsson. Also was on the hunt for Trouba and that’s going nowhere so that extra cap space he got as well is for nothing.
We could have drafted Lukas Fischer with that 2nd or finally gotten rid of Justin Holl or used it in a meaningful deal but it is what it is it’s a fail by Yzerman this off season.
Been calling to play the kids for a while now so that’s what we’ll finally get to see which is a good thing but with the moves Yzerman made this off season and other teams getting better wings will definitely be a bottom 10 team unless a kasper , danielson come out of the gate and are 50-60 pt guys

To me, it sounds like you are very bad losers over what other teams have managed to do during free agency. If you are very biased towards S.Y and that he never does wrong e.i as D-mac, then these are the kind of excuses I expect to hear. I'm not saying you three are like D-mac, but starting to sound more like it.
Many fans including myself are disappointed as we don't see any impact players being added. A lot of Tuber's keep up the hope that it must mean that something else big is on, so it must be when we have S.Y right.
Okay what has S.Y managed to do?
We got Kane back for a year. Is it because he will again have shelter time in RW this year too or? I'm not completely against giving him that as this year (off season), he can return to preparing like any other season on paper. But for 25/26 then what? Unknown factors create a basis for further speculation only.
S.Y sign some goalies and some defenders who at BEST are (1) a small upgrade on paper, then what? We also see Fischer again and we also have the eternity machine in Motte today, then what?
So far under free agent, this is looking more and more like watching the movie Moneyball with an upgraded crew of RW front office in it. Will the movie be better with these new faces! I say no, since a very good film (my 2 cents) has then been turned into an extremely bad comedy.
As a Fan, I find it extremely difficult to see how a rebuilding team can have a cap problem WITHOUT having a minimum of (4) elite players in their lineup, RW had 0 ELIT players in their lineup today.
RW has a few very good players e.i Kane and Larks. RW is forced to rely heavily on youngsters like MO & Raz and new faces from GR to carry the team forward. I maintain that S.Y is asking for a bridge too much here and I have a hard time seeing RW being able to maintain Q status for next season.
The facts remain that S.Y has signed stupid contracts without thinking long-term and he is holding on to the assets he managed to scrape together in order not to lose face publicly. For example, a buyout of Holl or trade ANY of those bad contracts we have. PLD succeeds annually with the trick of being traded, not by S.Y tho.
What we see live today is a rebuild of the rebuild (Moneyball) and feel free to listen again to Gustafsson's interview about being a RW for the next two years. Does Gustafsson exude any positive body language about being a RW, I say no as a Swede. From Rags to RW its a downgrade for sure.
As a fan, I choose to criticize the person who signs the contracts, not the player. Otherwise a good show as usual, keep it up.
