As a bit of a history buff, I will never, ever, EVER understand how the French got this recent reputation as being weak when it comes to warfare. Have we forgotten the Norman Conquest of Britain, Bonaparte or the fact that they are the United States of America’s oldest ally?
It stemmed from the French forces surrendering to Germany during WWII and has been blown out of proportion ever since. The effectiveness of the French Resistance more than made up for that, but thanks to EVERYONE claiming to have been a part of the Resistance kinda took the wind out of that sail!
Not sure why you don't understand. France did not even attempt to resist the Germans in 1940. American boys lost their lives liberating Europe and east Asia because the countries/people living in those areas didn't have the strength/money/resources/capability ... and in the case of France, it seems like they did not even want to try to resist. Without American intervention, could the allies have won in Europe? Without American intervention, could anybody else have defeated the Japanese Empire? The US military and their equipment saved the day. It follows that the Americans would be very proud of their world-dominant military and would feel contempt for Allies who did not fight. Wouldn't you lose respect for an ally who was not doing their share of the work? Especially when it's life and death situations. Ask a first responder or anybody in the military. I don't belong to any of these regions nor USA so here's another perspective: Maybe the leaders of France were realists who figured that Germany was much better equipped and had more numbers. If they thought they would be defeated anyway, might as well accept the invasion without taking damage to the cities and countryside, and without sending their young men into hopeless battle and death. France had hosted most of World War I and had taken massive amounts of damage as well as casualties. As for the historical instances of French military prowess you provided, you are not wrong. But people are likely to take the most recent incident as being the most relevant. And I'm not saying that individual French people are at fault. These were decisions made by the political and military leaders in France. As for the Americans, not not only did the military secure victory, they also set up conditions for the free world to prosper after WW II. The way the US treated the defeated Germans and Japanese is unprecedented in its generosity, goodwill and foresight. The US wrote the constitutions for Germany and Japan which set up both countries with a democratic political system designed to ensure individual rights, representation and stability, and to hope to have these countries as allies in the future. Hopefully that begins to explain it! Thank you for reading this far! 🙏
I think that when France became a corporation instead of a country the people themselves were seen as weak and innefective. Perhaps France should be called "New Algeria" As a Canadian though, it has been explained to me by French that when the Americas were lost the French ego never recovered and going from "we are number one" to second class losers is why the French here are the way they are. Fortunately, as long as you don't let the French into your life you don't have to share in these weird narcissistic passive agressive problems.
Seriously, you don't understand why nobody cares about something that happened a thousand years ago? Even Napoleon's last victory was over 200 hundred years ago. Everyone else gets it 🤣
Legionnaire deserves more credit. It was supposed to be a film about the French, yet not a single man groped another man in this movie! Furthermore, even after watching the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics, this movie almost convinced me that the French could be masculine badass studs. Then oh hell, I realized that none of the director and actors was French.
I never drink, eat or hold anything in my hands when I watch him with ready nearby floor patch ready to drop on and rofl the toilet is also on close stand by if I chocke 😂
Glad to see this movie get the recognition it deserves! I remember being a kid and riding my bike to go rent the VHS, it was one of my favorites. The movie is still a classic today.
I don't get the military strategy. Marching a group of men that qualify as more of a squad than an actual regiment, ON FOOT, under a scorching sun, while completely open to hit and run attacks by men on horseback, only to go man an almost destroyed fort in the middle of the desert against a much more numerous force of men on horseback?! That's so incredibly stupid that I can only surmise that no military advisor was involved in the writing of this script. Also JCVD pretty much killed that guy who fell of exhaustion, he was no military material in the first place and would have been weeded out during boot camp had JCVD not covered up for him.
