Although fry bread has been around awhile, it is not Native food. They were rations of flour so “generously” given to the Natives by their colonizers

Im from long island ny. I only ever have fry bread at home, or at a pow wow. Its totally awesome to see on a food truck.
Back in 2009 a group of my friends from the UK visited Seattle and the reservations around Olympic peninsula; we visited with the Makah, Quileute, Jamestown S’Klallam and Suquamish Nations. I was introduced to fry bread on the Makah Reservation, when we had a cookout on the beach and some of the community cooked for us. I had my first Indian Taco whilst attending the Tribal Canoe Journey on Suquamish Reservation. They tasted awesome. And don’t get me started on huckleberries... the jam is soooo good. On my last visit to Seattle last year I brought some home. I didn’t bring enough!

Okay, some of the Hungarians in the comments who can’t seem to grasp the concept of different cultures having similar foods, we get it you have a version of fried bread too.
Nice! That's my opinion too. If a food is easy to make and delicious than all cultures have a name for it. And who cares if Americans named Lángos to Fried Bread. So what? Even Gulash is present in many countrys menus. But the Hungarian Gulash, is the Hungarian Gulash, so the Hungarian fried bread are Lángos. (Man i'm hungry i think i'll get some Fried Bread i mean Lángos in the morning :D) And i'm hungarian, and i'm not butthurt (like the other Hungarian commenters in here :D ) if another country make a similar food than the ones in my country. :D

When I worked out on the street in Seattle a few years back doing ticket sales the guys from this truck used to hook me up with fry bread all the time - some seriously cool dudes!

I am half Native American, and fry bread is a must! We never lived on the tribe’s reservation, but when we do go back one of my aunts already has the dough ready to fry some bread because she knows we want some. We try to make it at home, but it isn’t the same like my aunt does it. It does something to you when you eat it. It is like it connects to your soul, and we eat it up. As far as I can remember, I have been eating fry bread. From the time a baby can eat solid food, fry bread is given to a Native American child. Fry bread is a part of Native American culture, and it just makes you remember all the good times you had sitting and enjoying being with each other. Some have passed on, but you just remember. I love being Native American!!

I have these every time I go back to Oklahoma. The ones we have are as big as a plate.
That'a how big they should be and round with no friggin holes!
No wheat flour; no milk, sugar, any oil and lard in dough mix. Just AP flour, salt, baking powder and salt.
Only fry in lard, no oils and no Crisco.
Navajo Taco toppings: boiled pinto beans with bacon., browned ground beef (seasoned or taco mix optional), shredded lettuce, diced fresh tomatos, shredded Colby/Jack cheese, chopped white onion. roasted & diced Hatch NM green chile or Hot Pace Picante sauce. Optional: Black olives. sour cream and guacamole.
I live in Oklahoma and I would love to know where you get the from and what part of Oklahoma if you don’t mind me asking
@@maribenzo9881 I lived a mile or so from the Choctaw Nation capital in Tuskahoma, they serve Fry Bread Tacos (usually called Indian Tacos) at the Labor Day festival on the Choctaw Capital grounds. I also get them home made at my friend's house.

Off The Rez is amazing!!! I recommend it to everyone that's in Sea. They were stationed in the parking lot of my job for about 2 weeks and I ate it everyday 😂
Used to have fry bread all the time as a kid in New Zealand. I loved them hot with butter and Golden Syrup.
Frybread is a labor intensive dish, which is why a lot of time it's done for special events or pow wow season. A spot on the Grand Ronde rez used to have the Skookum Burger. Which was a HUGE burger made with huge frybread buns. It was one of those challenge burgers. Skookum is a word from my coastal tribe that means the equivalent of demon.
Congratulations on taking a risk. I always thought of a food truck with native food. Someone always beats me to what I'm thinking about. I hope you continue to serve the people and native people. Best wishes.
We also fry bread like that in Galicia. Seeing those tacos reminds me of what I do with my bread when I feel fancy but I mostly like it simple. If I ever visit Seattle I'll try to try this!
Fry bread is amazing. First had it at the Alabama Coushatta reservation in Texas’s Great Piney Woods. Instantly fell in love with it. All the better with good venison sausage
I'm surprised that this is the only fry bread joint in Seattle. It's all over Portland. And visit any national park and the nearby cities in the U.S. west and you'll likely find fry bread and/or "Navajo" tacos. I've seen them in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico. Not my first choice but fry bread is quite tasty indeed. Another cool Sheldon episode. 👍
Right, and it took forever to come to Seattle too. In the elementary schools out there, the kids have fry bread every year during the Native American celebrations, but once you leave the sixth grade, there is seemingly no place to get it. All of the Native American restaurants in the area seem to snub their nose to the food and instead focus on things like salmon.
I'm from Portland and I've only had the hyped food trucks and the ones that used to be on MLK. Any recommendations?
+Mark F As a local you would know best. I do a lot of food research before I visit a city/country and noticed a few years ago that fry bread was a big thing in your city. But since Portland is over the top with outstanding restos, I never got around to it. Sorry, mate.
us Natives don't call it "navajo tacos " 😂 them navajo's think they invented everythang 😂💀 we just call them Frybread or Popovers on the rez.

We have our own here in New Zealand 🇳🇿.

Basically the same as Langos from Hungary. When I was in Budapest I had it with sour cream, cheese and chives as well as a burger. Now I know if I'm ever in Seattle to try the taco and huckleberry jam styles.

Fry bread tacos are amazing
the hungarian langos is like the italian pizza, it was born out of a way to use up leftover bread dough. native american frybread is different in that it was never intended to be baked in an oven so it is fresh dough intended to be fried, not leftover old dough. the hungarian dough also frequently contained potatoes, something native american frybread never has.

My grandmother use to make me this bread all the time as a kid just like this. And we are Puerto Rican.
Most cultures have some kind of fried bread.
Same for dumplings, lots of cultural spins!
lhamilt yes we make something called “guanimes” it’s basically what other cultures call cornmeal dumpling we eat it boiled or fried. Boiled with some type of stewed protein such as bacalao guisado aka stew cod fish or fried version dipped in sugar in the morning with coffee 😋😋😋😋

In Hawaii when they have the Pow Wows they sell that. Either fry bread tacos or with honey. The tacos are bomb!

Oh lord, what did I do to be blessed with this video? I never knew there were so many variations. I only thought about traditional Indian tacos, Wojapi sauce, and dipping it in soup soup soup. My mom would use bread for burgers, prairie dogs, and ham sandwiches and that was it. Now I'm going to ask her to experiment more and more. ^^

We're the second to start a food truck here in yakima county for ndn tacos and burgers as well stuffed frybread ect so happy they started 1st just ate at their Cafe last week and we as well have a restaurant now in Toppenish Wa A&B Native American cuisine
I always look forward to the Powow at the Morongo Casino every year. My favorite is the Hualapai people of Northern Arizona.

Well this was a type of food that was introduced pretty late, as when they where on the rez, because this was the food rations they where given by the government. Back then it was probably less tasty, and fancy looking. I love how you take something so universal (many cultures have them) and simple as fry bread, and make it so tasty, and fresh. I make this maybe twice a year.
This just inspires me to start a food truck to share our Navajo culture with the different ethical backgrouds of amerca through food. Here on the Navajo reservation I can only think of 2 restraunts that specialize in Native American cuisine. Besides that the only other place to get native food is at a local swapmeet.
Fry bread are bakes in Trinidad n Tobago. Bake n Shark in Maracas beach: pepper sauce , garlic sauce, tambrand chutney, mango chow with a Shandy.
