A wonderful presentation! I too appreciated the definition of “vertical reading”. Dante… wow… I can’t begrudge him his pride! However… should I be cautious about my enjoyment of reading the comments sections of these videos! 😉
I love when she speaks of Mira! Her expression is great. Loved the talk, well done. East coast versus west coast rap battle? She has such a great way of presenting this.
This is the second presentation in which the speaker references "vertical reading" (though only the first in which it is directly named). As a long-time reader of Dante, I find this approach intriguing. I will be watching for such parallelism throughout the rest of this project.
Dr. Holberg, Thank you for your lively and energetic presentation. I enjoyed your comments regarding appearance versus reality and the "contrapasso" between sin and punishment. Also, how human beings are drawn to gossip and how distracting it can be and how degrading if they succumb to it. In regard to "vertical reading," I am a bit confused. In my mind what you described might be better described as "lateral reading" or "parallel reading."
Hi Bob: Thanks for your kind comments. The terms you describe make good sense (especially in the way one reads across), but I think vertical was chosen to reflect the direction of the poem--heavenward to God. There's a lot of wonderful material on vertical readings--you might want to start with a series of lectures done at Cambridge (or there's a 3 volume book, too).

Bravo! I want to sign up for a class with her! What an enjoyable, relatable teacher! Thank you!
Whoa, vertical reading! I'm definitely going to be keeping that in mind as we continue to read. Excellent presentation, Dr. Holberg. Thank you!

A wonderfully rich and enriching talk on this Canto. I was drawn greatly drawn in, and I really enjoyed it.

What a superb presentation. Thank you, Dr. Holberg.
Thank you very much for this helpful, engaging presentation.
Excellent!

Wonderful!
I like her. also she reminds me of Pomona Sprout
Great explanation. I needed help/insight on this canto.
I had no idea that diss tracks can be traced all the way back to the Middle Ages 😂 I’ll have to go on a tenzone deep dive now
Very nice I really enjoyed that. And it was an excellent palate cleanser from the previous speaker
good commentary -- will keep an eye out for vertical reading in remaining cantos
