I think is normal for the Percy Jackson musical to be one heavily requested, I’m pretty sure the Venn diagram of Epic fans and PJO fans it’s pretty almost a perfect circle, PJO pretty much create a whole genre of mythology nerds.
About the Mrs. Dodd fight, all three adaptations actually got it correct. Even in the books it was an extremely fast fight, like so fast that it almost didn't count as one. It was so fast that Percy wondered for a moment that maybe someone slipped some psychedelic mushrooms in his lunch.
ARE YOU SEROUS !?!?! I was JOKING when I said that after I found you started appearing EVERYWHERE! Epic, Six, Hadestown in the future and now The Lightning Thief? Just react to every musical I like, why don't you. But seriously now I'm excited!
So your question of "have I ever watched a musical where its just the characters telling us what was happening instead of riding along" and my first thought was that that is actually a kind of good description of SIX with the wives telling their stories XD On extra notes, I think mrs dodds was southern in book so the accent is not to far off (and they have a limited cast of 9 actors playing 47 characters), also don't worry the musical jumps back to more traditional after this intro.
The whole first-person narration is definitely an intro song thing. It's like 4th wall breaking and addressing the audience which works amazingly in a theater where the performers can literally seem to speak to the audience. It's super hype, it's as if Percy came out from the book and is now warning us in real life about the story you're about to see. It's obviously gonna come out different in an animatic medium. And if anything, this rendition of the Lightning Thief story is my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE. It's the one that nailed the humor and absurdity that is Percy Jackson. They had to change a bunch of stuff for a musical to make sense of course, but the story and humor and emotion are all quintessentially like a gen z Percy Jackson. I'm sure there are a lot of amazing animatics out there but honestly, the best way to experience this particular musical is through the actual stage play (same story with Six the musical) where there's some sort of audience interaction/participation in a way. Hope you continue this!!!!!
I'm so glad you're checking this out! And I really hope this video gets the proper engagement so you'll keep reacting to it. TLT musical is in my opinion THE best Percy Jackson adaptation for so many reasons. First bc it shows in an almost comical-yet serious way all the big issues in the story: the gods aren't really good, they abandon their children, Percy has self-steem issues, Percy's sass (very very important), Luke's resentment (here he didn't appear much but in later songs you'll realize the subtle yet always present bitterness), Annabeth's eagerness to get out of camp, Grover's guilt, etc. It also stays true to the story while making small changes, to adapt the story to a faster pace without feeling like it's rushed to fit in a 2 hour-ish musical. And those changes just make you enjoy the musical even more, bc although you know what will happen, the musical shows it in a different light that could've perfectly happened bc they got the characters' essence just right. People often forget how self-depreciating Percy was in the first book, he really had it rough, and is humor comes as self defense. This musical balances perfectly humor and serious topics in such a natural way that when you hear it, it just sounds like Percy. Also it manages to bring to life magic and creatures in such a creative way, taking into account that everything must be made with practical effects on stage (you should totally check the recorded version when you finish all the reactions, the acting is just perfect and so hilarious, and the moment Percy goes what am I supposed to do with a pen, woah sword awesome, is super cleverly done). Fun fact, there are only 7 actors in TLT musical, and the only ones who interpret only one character are Chris McCarrell (Percy) and Kristin Stokes (Annabeth). They had almost no budget, yet they still managed to make such a masterpiece. Can't wait for you to check out "Put you in your place", you'll love what Sarah Beth Pfeifer did there (she's Clarisse, among others) Also I think Mrs Dodds was a substitute, the previous math teacher had a nervous breakdown, if my memory doesn't fail me.
yes, omg! I think my favorite part about this musical, and the books as a whole, is Luke's character (I love everything else but morally grey and ambiguous characters are always fun). reading it at a young age, you grow up seeing everything through Percy's eyes and therefore not following or understanding why Luke is doing what he's doing. then when you're older and closer to Luke's age and you happen to reread it... it just hits you like a truck. he had very good reasons for everything he did but he went about it the wrong way and it ended poorly. he and Percy are perfect mirrors of each other (shown beautifully in the Last Day of Summer, where Luke echoes Percy's solo, Good Kid) but Luke has lost all hope and trust in everyone and is now trying to do what he thinks best to protect himself and those he cares about. I also think the musical does a very good job setting up the betrayal- he's a fun and reliable person, as shown in the Campfire Song, and everyone looks up to him and trusts him, but he's definitely bitter and it's so subtly and yet beautifully put in there... like gosh, I love this musical for how it handles the characters and keeps it true to them in the books.
I'm so glad you decided to check this out! With the whole "show don't tell" aspect, it really is just the prologue that has an post-lightning thief Percy narrating. The rest of the musical is very "learn as you go" storytelling. Also, with the death of Mrs. Dodds, you said it's been a while since you read the book, but I am pretty sure she is vaporized with one swing. I really do hope you continue watching, the musical is the best true-to-the-book adaptation! ❤
Don't worry, that was just how the first song was formatted as a sort of introduction to the story and a call back to the books. All the other songs are normal showing not telling type songs and they are SO GOOD
Imagine when percy jackson season two comes out, and they show a flashback of Odysseus and he's played by none other than... Jay Rivera-Herrans (the guy who wrote epic the musical)

The books are also narrated after they've happened. That's why the first sentences already include the knowledge of how dangerous being a half blood is. But while each book is probably narrated a short time after the events at its ending have happened, the musical may be the adult Percy narrating his whole experience from six years back, having lived through all the trauma and quests of the books. What I enjoy immensely about the musical is that it retells the story to the grown children that once read Percy Jackson. Not to the younger audience, but the more mature version that's taken off the rose tinted glasses of youth. When I first read the books, there was a prevalent effort in the demigods to make the best of a bad deal. Here, they're all bitter. They know their parents are not treating them as they should. In the books this was more discreetly pictured, with Percy trying to see the best in even the Gods, and slowly realising he's lying to himself, then deciding to change things. Because Percy from the future is trying to be an objective narrator and only relays his thoughts at the time of the events, not what his opinion is in hindsight. In the musical I feel like there's more righteous rage present. The filter is off. He freely tells the audience what the gods were doing is wrong, even though that's something the child version of him hadn't accepted yet. That's the adult Percy's opinion and rage sipping in through the narration. Ultimately, while the books teach you what a bad situation looks like, the musical is for those that already know they're in a bad situation and are just done with it. And I love both of these portrayals.
I think you would LOVE analyzing the musical "The Mad Ones". My autistic traumatized ass keeps rewatching it because every time I reanalyzed and re-understand it, it scratches the perfect itch. I'm unsure how much this spoils, but it's a musical where the main character actually tells you what happened throughout practically the entirety of it. 21:50 As a fellow book lover, thought I'd add my thoughts on this I personally LOVE when Mrs Dodds is defeated a little too easy. Well... maybe nnot ''easy' more 'quickly' Like, Percy was just DROPPED into this world. He was having a normal, boring day and then BAM! Weird stuff for a few moments and then... just back to boring again So, it leaves Percy there like "...What the hell just happened?!" I dunno, I just feel it adds to the chaoticness that the mythical side of his life will soon become
I’m actually really happy you reacted to this because i kinda love this musical for how unique it is with the format but i also hope you’re able to react to other songs because i also reccomended listening to the Campfire song
I would love to see more of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, there is a shortage of reactions to it and it's a shame for it to be so underappreciated.
There is a lot of bits in between songs that tells the story and are really funny. I would recomend watching clips of in between bits. Oh please absolutely do the rest of this after SIX and Hadestown. I (and I guess most people in your fanbase after EPIC) love this musical so much. It's like a cult classic and all the singers/actors are super talented and well cast.
I’m sure that the animatics will be easier to react to for the sake of TH-cam, but, there are also bootleg recordings of the stage play on TH-cam that you can watch on your own time if you so desire!
Technically Mrs Dodds was a substitute, I'm pretty sure Percy mentions at some point that he has this hazy memory of having another teacher for the first week of school until Mrs Dodds replaced her. Basically, Dodds only came to the school because of Percy (duh) and it took her a week to notice him I guess. So *technically* she is a substitute, no one just sees her as one because of the Mist.
Mister Mortius, sir. This is the first time i see a reacción to the pjo musical, and this being my special interest, i am extremely happy and are eagerly waiting for you to hear all of it if the, hopefully, near future. Have a grate day :)

Also I can't hear the opening lines non-songified anymore....
I think its very tell instead of show since it's the intro and it needs to give people who haven't read the books a lot of context... honestly I haven't even noticed this was unusual, since it just felt very much like the book... Also Please react to the next soon I'd love to see more

It's so nice to see a book fan reacting to the musical cause most i've seen go into it knowing nothing and are really confused. The storytelling thing is really just this prologue song. Also, if you're able, check out the cut songs try and pick a side, they're so good. Love your reactions!
Omg you should totally continue with this musical, it’s literally so good! The songs are really cool and the adaptation is actually awesome, so yess please check it all out!
I love this musical. It’s actually one of my favorite musicals. I genuinely think the musical is the best adaptation we have ever had and I did watch the movies and the show. In 6th grade I read the first book, Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief. I even watched the movie but I didn’t continue reading the books for some reason so when I was a junior in high school I had some money so I finally decided to buy all the Percy Jackson books on Amazon but before they were shipped to my house I decided to listen to the musical and it was amazing. My favorite song is “Good kid”. Percy’s solo, which I’m very excited to see you react to if you continue and I really hope you do. I think you’ll love it. Also this is the only song with this perspective. I promise you’ll love the other songs.
I love this musical so so much. Found it in like 2017 or smth and it’s amazing. The songs are amazing and well written and if you manage to find videos of a stage production the effects are always fun
I read Percy Jackson for the first time in freshman year of highschool. I was 14 and we had a Greek mythology unit and someone recommended this series to my mom. I read The Lightning Thief about 14 times before I realized that there was a completed series and a sequel series. After that I devoured PJO and HoO
It’s really just this song that has that “tell” quality! This is because it’s the intro song, and it’s mostly just about quickly establishing the setting and Percy as a Character, so the musical can focus more on the latter part of the story. I’d say it gets the job done pretty well! And I do like Mrs Dods quick death tbh, because the actual scene was very quick in the books as well. And it makes sense with how Percy questioned if it even happened afterwards. It was so quick that he could have imagined it, but of course, he knows he didn’t. The general fast pace also makes sense, I think, because the books were VERY fast paced as well. They were written to be read by kids with ADHD after all haha (which, for the record, probably explains why they were one of the few books I could bother to get through as a child)
you seriously have to finish this show sir i NEED to see your reaction to some of these songs !! put you in your place and last day of summer especially :)
Got into your videos from Six and I love Lightning Thief too! I would love for you to continue this series as soon as possible. Also the entire musical is not in first person but it does have those kind of tongue in cheek, breaking the fourth wall references throughout to mimic the style of the book.

As a fellow book lover, thought I'd add my thoughts on this
I personally LOVE when Mrs Dodds is defeated a little too easy. Well... maybe nnot ''easy' more 'quickly'
Like, Percy was just DROPPED into this world. He was having a normal, boring day and then BAM! Weird stuff for a few moments and then... just back to boring again
So, it leaves Percy there like "...What the hell just happened?!"
I dunno, I just feel it adds to the chaoticness that the mythical side of his life will soon become
AS A PJO FAN IM SO EXITED FOR THIS AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Please do more of this, there's a shortage of reactions of this musical
I’m actually really happy you reacted to this because i kinda love this musical for how unique it is with the format but i also hope you’re able to react to other songs because i also reccomended listening to the Campfire song
I would love to see more of The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, there is a shortage of reactions to it and it's a shame for it to be so underappreciated.
There is a lot of bits in between songs that tells the story and are really funny. I would recomend watching clips of in between bits. I can't wait for you to get to The Last Day of Summer because it is my favorite song. The bonus songs are also really amazing. They did have to cut out some points to make it shorter.
YIPPIE! SOMEONE REACTING TO THE PERCY JACKSON MUSICAL! I don't think I've ever seen anyone react to the whole thing before, so I hope you do! I do like the perspective you take, it's really engaging and interesting. If you like Clarisse's voice you'll love Put You In You're Place
To answer your question the musical shifts into a more traditional storytelling style after this song.
YEEESSSS love the pj musical and I think you have listened to enough greek media to dawn yourself as a GREEK GEEK Mr Moistius
Except when he calls a hippocampus a hippogriff.....👀
@@phoenix_Talaria close enough
@@AidanDoherty-xk1qq absolutely not!!🤣 Completely different creatures!
@@phoenix_Talaria I know I know but they both have hippo in them so I'm willing to let him off for this one
@@AidanDoherty-xk1qq ones on land and the air and has fur and feathers and wings, the other is in the water and swims. Djdjahdjw no, completely different creatures 🤣🤣🤣
STOP IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS I HAVENT SEEN ANYONE REACT TO TGIS MUSICAL TYYYYYY
YESS FRR
The way I actually ran for my headphones when I saw the notification
I’m pretty sure you are right that Miss.Dodds was there for longer because he asks Grover and others but nobody else seemed to remember her, which he found weird. Though you are wrong about the fight, it actually ended really quick in one swipe.
Oh please absolutely do the rest of this after SIX and Hadestown. I (and I guess most people in your fanbase after EPIC) love this musical so much. It's like a cult classic and all the singers/actors are super talented and well cast.
I mean, the Percy Jackson and Epic: The Musical fandom Venn diagram IS a circle, so it makes sense that this was so popular
Please tell me I’m not the only one who thinks the singer for Percy sounds like Jorge in Epic.
No… just me?…
I’m sure that the animatics will be easier to react to for the sake of TH-cam, but, there are also bootleg recordings of the stage play on TH-cam that you can watch on your own time if you so desire!
If you don't do the whole musical now, it would be a crime.
mortius, ur singlehandedly pulling me into the percy jackson story
SIX is a musical in which the characters are telling you about things that happened in past tense as well.
Something you might not realize from the animatics, is how small the cast of this play is
Percy got that surfer dude guitar riffs going on, very funny.
About the substitute part is interesting cuz in my language, it was said she was a substitutor.
Iirc she was a substitute, there was mention of her taking over after the first teacher got sick or smth?
@@alysiahansen6951had a mental health crisis, either just because or just after Christmas
I love this musical!!!!!
And the books of course
Please please pleeeeeease do more. I love Percy Jackson and almost * cough the movie cough * all of the adaptations mean the world to me. I love watching your videos on epic because they added so much more meaning to something I already loved so much. I can not wait to see you do more of this. I hope you will love it as much as I did!
MORE MUSICALS LETSS GOOOOOOO!!!!! Also I would kill to see you watch Les Miserables. It is THE musical
FUCKING FINALLY!!! Fun fact I’ve met Chris McCarrel! Chill dude!
PJO is too in my top shelf and my favorite books ever, and this is my fav adaptation of the series
Mortius: *sees tree* Thalia! :D
My brain: *internal screaming*
I looove the next song, "Strong."
I can't wait for you to react to "campfire song" from the lightning thief, it's my favourite!!!!
I love this show so much it captures the angsty side of the story in a way the new show absolutely DOESN'T
Also the voices totally fit for me but I've done more Percy Jackson via audiobook than reading at this point and can accept almost any voice now.
Also I can't hear the opening lines non-songified anymore....
"I don't think this is something I ever saw in a musical" Meanwhile man's watching Six
I think its very tell instead of show since it's the intro and it needs to give people who haven't read the books a lot of context... honestly I haven't even noticed this was unusual, since it just felt very much like the book... Also Please react to the next soon I'd love to see more
I adore you doing this from both the perspective of a musician but also a long time PJO fan. Please continue.
HECK YESSSSSSSS 🌊⚡ FINALLY WE GET PJO
please please please continue this! i was in this show last year and it was so much fun (especially cause i love pjo and greek mythology, but it’s just genuinely such a fun time)
!!! TLT musical! I'm so excited to see you listen through this (also, please also check out the bonus tracks, it has one of my favorite songs, Pick a Side!). Seconding what a lot of people are saying in that I think this is the best PJ adaptation out there, it really captures the heart of the story quite well.
Loved this so much! If you arent going to react to the songs in order, please react to the campfire song or another terrible day next. I would love it if you did the whole musical in order even more ofc. Youll love this one!
Nooo i cant wait two days 😭
I CANTEAIT FOR HIM TO LISTEN TO THE CAMPFIRE SONG
After you finish Percy Jackson I suggest “Be More Chill”. Although it does have some non-child friendly elements it is incredible!
This might be a stretch, but if you're at all interested in an immersive musical experience, I'd love to watch you go through Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical. If you havent experienced it, I think you'd absolutely love it.
I've seen a little gameplay of that. It seems really cool!
i’m so glad you’ve chosen to check out this musical! i love george salazar in this and some of the later songs like another terrible day. i really hope this becomes another musical you keep reacting to on your channel because im living for your EPIC and Six reactions right now.
OMG I'M SO EXCITED
pjo for life
please continue this I’m begging u
YES! i was lucky enough to see this live with almost the entire og cast, and it was SO fun. the staging and silly low budget special effects (lots of glitter and toilet paper) are so perfect for the spirit of the story. this is a musical made BY fans FOR fans and it SHOWS. it has such a special place in my heart :)
Epic Brainrot is sinking into the other fandoms😭
When part two?😢
YES!
It's so nice to see a book fan reacting to the musical cause most i've seen go into it knowing nothing and are really confused. The storytelling thing is really just this prologue song. Also, if you're able, check out the cut songs try and pick a side, they're so good. Love your reactions!
WAIT HOW DID I MISS THIS AND WHERES THE REST AAA
He hasn't released it yet
Omg you should totally continue with this musical, it’s literally so good!
The songs are really cool and the adaptation is actually awesome, so yess please check it all out!
I love this musical so much and really do hope you end up doing the rest of it.
9:45 9:46 NICO RUNNING AWAY AND THE HADES STATUE
I saw this show on tour at the Kennedy Center and loved it! After the show, I found out it was understudy Sam Leicht's first show as Percy. :)
COME ON! I HAVE TO WAIT FOR THIS!! *Sad* I love the pjo musical and now I have to wait to see you react to it...
Omg, I adore this musical, I'd love to see your reactions sooner, if there's enough interest :)
LFGGGGG I really hope this does well since I’d love to see you react to more of this
I love this musical so so much. Found it in like 2017 or smth and it’s amazing. The songs are amazing and well written and if you manage to find videos of a stage production the effects are always fun
mortius bestie please bring this back 🧎♀️🙏
I read Percy Jackson for the first time in freshman year of highschool. I was 14 and we had a Greek mythology unit and someone recommended this series to my mom. I read The Lightning Thief about 14 times before I realized that there was a completed series and a sequel series. After that I devoured PJO and HoO
I REALLY love this. PLEASE continue!!!!!!
Yes keep going! It always gets stuck in my head and Percy is a sassy bean throughout
