I hope you cover William Randolph Hearst’s other grand property perhaps even less known St. Donat’s castle. Hearst’s home in the UK, a massive medieval castle that he expanded by destroying countless ancient buildings to create a fantasy castle.
In the 60s thru the mid 80's my father was the Woodlands Mgr. for appox. 60,000 acres of Hearst land in McCloud, Ca. Which is where Wyntoon is. He was a forester by occupation, he also gave guided tours of Wyntoon exterior and interior, as he oversaw the grounds as well. Our family were so fortunate to experience everything in and out of these magical grounds on a regular basis. I wish everyone had access to this amazing place as it is all one can imagine and so much more. Just incredible. Fishing on the rivers bend was so much fun and fruitful. Being there was just like a fairy tale. My father died in 86' and eventually the Hearst family stopped allowing access to anyone outside of family and close friends. We never got permission the visit after that. None the less... These are some of the most precious memories I have.
So glad to hear that this beautiful Bavarian village still exists. Lucky for the niece that she got paid out before the fire. Thanks so much for another interesting video.
I’ve never heard of this property. Its like a romantic village, compared to San Simeon. This was as interesting a story as that ‘Castle’. Thanks for the video.
Both places are magnificent! Not only the location and scenery but the interiors of the first house too! Glad to see the Bavarian Village is still remaining and in use!
Having only recently discovered this wonderful channel, I've been totally immersed in the fine detail and quality of your vids, Ken & crew!! Thank you so much for the always entertaining, very educational, and (for me) nostalgic and totally mind boggling glimpses into our American past. It just breaks my heart. I lived near Hearst Castle on the beautiful California coast for many years, and was introduced to the unequaled works of the great & legendary Julia Morgan through one of the original families that settled in Cambria in the 19th c. Wyntoon is one of my most beloved places on Earth!! May it be preserved forever, as a testament to architectural genius & artistry, like so many of the irreplaceable places that you feature.... much gratitude to you 💛🌹
My father and I w ere fortunate enough to do some repair work on what I believe was the " Cinderella " or " Story Book Castle" .I believe it was in the early '70's. Very impressive place!
There was a large storm that blew a huge tree into the corner of the building. We pulled pieces of the old flooring and went to ( I believe) was Mission Tile in Santa Clara CA. They matched the color and the tex t use perfectly and Dad and I retiled the then repaired the fireplace that was also damaged. I was 16 or 17 at time but I remember meeting Hearst Jr. The property is definitely unique and it was nice to have seen it and work there.
I've been assigned to design a haunted mansion (interior and exterior) for an independent animated film. I don't get paid for it but it's a fun project that's also a big challenge. I love architecture but have never studied it, and your videos offer so much great documentation that is really inspiring and detailed. The homes in this segment just cry out for a production designer to emulate them lol. This particular video has been extremely inspiring. Thanks!
Thank you for this! I never knew that the original Wyntoon burned down in 1929 and the fantasy village we see now is a different place. I always thought it was all still there, but some photos were older than others.
I'm glad the houses survive. They sound wonderful: I'd love to tour them. So many large houses were destroyed by fire. It's sad that so much beautiful art and furniture was destroyed ib the original house when it burned. Very enjoyable video. Thanks! .
I've been inside Wyntoon a few times doing communications work. An amazing place, breathtaking. I do wonder how close the forest fires of recent summers has gotten to the estate?
Great Video, I have often wondered about this village called Wyntoon as I'd heard about it 45 yrs ago but never looked in to it. Thanks for Sharing this info. Phoebe lived and died in my old home of Pleasanton,California Castlewood Country club. It burned down too in the early 1900's.
I KNEW YOU WOULD SAY THAT IT WAS DESTROYED BY FIRE BEFORE YOU SAID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT SHINGLED EXTERIOR JUST BEGS FOR SUCH A DISASTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BUT I DO ADMIT THAT IN THIS CASE, THOSE REPLACEMENT HOUSES ARE NOT TOO BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS ONE IS UNIQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LONG LIVE THIS HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this one! I had no idea about McCloud. Thank you, Ken. - Do you know about the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon? In my humble opinion, it is one of the most beautiful homes west of the Atlantic Ocean. 😎👍🏼
While all of these are way too much house for me, I love the German Gothic style and fun details inside and out, on both the impressive original home, and the reincarnated 'village'. I prefer the "rustic charm" and castle esthetic over the gold-encrusted rooms of many of the New York mansions we've seen here. Thank you for featuring and giving a bit of background on the female architect. I've been to Bavaria, and she definitely absorbed the magic of the region, which informs her designs. Fortunately, McCloud, CA lies to the southeast of Mt.Shasta, away from the McKinney fire. I remind myself every day not to complain about the humidity here in San Diego. :0
Julia Morgan had a pretty fascinating career; she really was a pioneer for professional women. And, I'm glad the area around this delightful 'village' remains safe. :)
I'm afraid Morgan's time in Germany was spent in vain, as the buildings she designed owe more to Cecile B. Demille and Hollywood than to anything in Bavaria. Charming and beautiful nonetheless !
Dam smh her son had THE WORST relationship w that property!! 1st his OWN MOTHER skipped him and passed it to his cousin ?!! What kinda mother was she?!! Then the fire not long after he finally won back the land, n then to top it all off--PAYING RENT??!! smh that's just effin horrible! Smh my God!
Why call these buildings castles? They are not 'castles." There are no "castles" in America. When America was founded people were already tearing down castles in Europe. Please stop calling houses castles: simply because they are big. That'sso inappropriate and dumb.
As far as I know WR Hearst nor any of his friends referred to San Simeon as the Castle. It was “the ranch” or simply San Simeon. When it became a state run tourist attraction in the late fifties it was branded as “Hearst Castle”.
This property is like a full-scale diorama! What a charming concept. Julia Morgan was a brilliant woman.

Enjoying the videos and pictures, histories.
My humble home (castle ) is very small, but my castle is paid in full.
I’m thankful for that.
What a fascinating story about this quaint little village!!! It's nice that it exists today!! 👍👍

The first house in the village is my fave. These beautiful surroundings and the first Bavarian house would be heavenly!
Didn't look that way at first, but Anne Flint dodged a major financial bullet when Hearst got control of the estate.
Wow, never would have known. Thank you
That all burned down.
I don't know if anybody's like me but you take us on a fantasy ride because I be thinking about like wow these places are fantastic
Yes thank you for your channel. Cheers from Australia
I hear you, I feel the same way.

I was always interested in Wyntoon, thanks for sharing!
Very glad the village has been kept by descendences for their enjoyment!
Thank you for this. I'd never heard of this estate before and found it quite fascinating.
Great video! Finding info on Wyntoon is hard - very impressed!
These unique rustic buildings in the forest really speak to me.

Just love these videos. A wealth of history and information 💙💙💙

Id love to hear more, when did you go there? how often? did you see anything else out of the ordinary?
Wow!! Beautiful and love how each house has their own personality. Didn’t know about this about Hearst building this Bavarian Village in CA.
I need to do some reading on Julia Morgan. So glad these beauties survived.
Hearst and Marion Davies spent a lot of time at Wyntoon during WW II since San Simeon was closed during the war.

That was amazing! Great feature :) I wish this episode was longer tho Lol! THANKS!
My grandparents had a personal tour of the grounds. The had pictures of the beautiful fountain an statues. They used to fish for the grounds keeper.
Thank you 🙏I never heard of the Bavarian Village!
My father’s first cousin, Jubal Weston was a caretaker at Wyntoon for many years. I always wanted to see it, but it’s very secluded.
What a shame that it is still a private because it looks amazing! Maybe it will be a house museum someday?
Thanks
Thank you for the video!
Would love to see you do something on the Dakota building, it has quite a bit of history.
Great that this masterpiece still exists. Have you done a video on the Longyear mansion?
Great video
There is a story/proverb, it goes:
Grandpa made all the money, Dad maintained all the money, but the Son spent all the money!
Often more succinctly expressed as "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations."
so so true, 3rd Generation families always are the most spoiled and greedy. Entitlement I guess is what they call it nowadays.
A story that doens't end in demolition is refreshing !
you are excellent at this job. I like the facts just the facts.
Love this one! I had no idea about McCloud. Thank you, Ken. - Do you know about the Pittock Mansion in Portland, Oregon? In my humble opinion, it is one of the most beautiful homes west of the Atlantic Ocean. 😎👍🏼
George Hearst was a large part of the town I grew up in.
This is North of me, I'm in placer county right near Sacramento
I had no idea he built anything like this. And especially way up where it is. I live in N Ca and never heard of this.
You'd never know it was there. It's probably 4-5 miles off Hwy 89 in the middle of massive forest.
I just looked up McCloud, CA a month ago because of the waterfalls in the area.

How rich was this family?!! I'm happy with my little apartment.
I'm afraid Morgan's time in Germany was spent in vain, as the buildings she designed owe more to Cecile B. Demille and Hollywood than to anything in Bavaria. Charming and beautiful nonetheless !
You should do a video called “What was the Luray Inn” I’m from the area and I saw it in a book
you should check out NeMours Manision in Wilmington Delaware.
do a story on the James Tustin Estate early 1800's soho district Pittsburgh Pa
The infamous 99-year lease. All the lands corporations in US leased have to be returned to the Chieftains or be liable. All expired in 2013.
The way forests burn in California, far more often than anywhere else, I hate to think it'll all be gone, probably soon.
And like all good fairy 🧚♀️ tales , they lived happily ever after
With the exception of the odd kidnapping and ensuing bank robbery here and there.
Just float down McCloud River

Smh my God!
Grand but a bit over the top for me. The Cinderella house reminiscent of Disney land
Wonder if the destroying fire was an accident🤷🏻♀️
Probally Insuranse Fraud.
3;12 Looks like a California Grizzly with her cub, not a "brown bear" to me.
Heh. I read that Marion never liked this one, and refused to live there - she apparently called it "Spitoon."
Smart decision to go for a village, surely a castle would have been demolished
👍
Where is Wyntoon?
Way up in the far northern end of California, about an hour south of the Oregon border.
William Randolph Hearst IS BLACK 🖤 Blessings and Hugs 💖💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕💕!
How many fires did this family suffer?
legend has it that this is were patti hearst and the SLA hid out
Wyntoon , it could use a new name
A disgusting monument to a disgusting legacy.
May it last forever, to help it hold their spirits here.
Lighten up, snotwipe.
99 year lease? Sounds like a Chinese thing. Why?
Marion Davies referred to it as "spitoon" because she hated going there..so boring and all, you know😮

Such tasteless building...lol
