Welcome to fresh water fishing and carp fishing as well. The fish you caught was indeed a Grass Carp. The Common Carp has a more sucker like mouth than the Grass Carp. As far as whether or not to try a second time in the same area, canals can be tricky for carp after you have fought one to net in that type of confined environment. If there are any more in the immediate area, they will often be very spooky and shut down after that kind of a disturbance. It would likely be better to move on a good ways away to try again. If you are able to scout local canals during the middle of the day when the sun is high, depending on water depth and turbidity you might be able to spot resting or feeding carp. Walking the canals at this time of day can be productive for spotting fish, and a bicycle would help you to cover even more water. If there is any way that you can find a shaded area of the canal, you might find fish there. Some of the smaller canals do have shade trees near enough to create a cooler area for the fish to hang out. You also may find catfish, bass and sunfish in those areas.
There is a more efficient rig for carp fishing than the old bread lump or dough ball setup (even though I caught my first Common Carp 50+ years ago on a simple home made dough ball :-). The rig is called a "hair rig", and is very effective for the wary carp. Details can be found on a channel by the name of Outdoors With Tom. There are many channels relating to carp fishing, but his is one of my favorites and he is here in the USA. He has many videos about carp fishing specifically. He shows you how to tie up your own hair rigs and how to use one. If you just want to buy a pre-tied hair rig he does have them for sale, as well as custom sinkers and also baits too.The hair rig is really pretty simple, I tie up my own hair rigs and since they were specifically developed for carp fishing, they are very effective. They are quite good at catching catfish also. I have even caught trout on them. They are a very versatile and well thought out bait fishing bottom rig.
For more ideas about canal fishing in Arizona specifically, there is a channel by a fellow in Phoenix I believe, that fishes the canal system often. I do not remember the channel name offhand right now, but if you search YT for something like "Canal fishing" - or maybe "Canal fishing in Arizona" you should be able to find him. If I can find one of his videos or remember the channel name, I will hit you up with it.
The opposite of you, I have fished almost exclusively in fresh water all of my life, not getting to the coast very often, but now that I am retired I hope to get to salt water more often and chase Leopard Sharks, Bat Rays, Striped Bass and other species in the near future. Good luck with your fresh water fishing adventures!
EDIT: I found the channel about canals. It is called TheFishinMagician2.0, and he has a video entitled "Everything you need to know about canal fishing in Arizona". there are other folks who canal fish there that showed up when I searched "Fishing canals in Arizona", so good luck.

Thank you so much for your time and comment!
I’ll have to keep in mind to search for those shady areas, it makes sense that’s where the fish are going to be hanging out during the summer. Keep em tight 🫡

Sick dude, my boy pulled a White Amur/Grass carp first time on canal!! The common carp fight even better in the canals. I'm not sure what your timeline is but if you can get on one of these canals at night, that's when the 10+ lb carp are feeding on bottom corn, bread, oatmeal packed together, hotdogs. Using hotdogs you might pull up a channel catfish too they love those dogs. But yeah get in a bit deeper and wider canal at sundown you'll be surprised what you pull. That's awesome to see a big dawg saltwater fisherman come to fresh water and hit the Canals immediately!!! Alot of folks sleep on the canals or don't even try fishing them, you will be surprised what you can pull.
