  • Join me for a very special trip! The Avro RJ85 is one of my favorite airplanes of all time and it's a rare one for me to fly since I live in the USA. This short, but sweet trip report highlights the RJ85 service from Airlink between Johannesburg, South Africa to Maun, Botswana.
AirLink is a South African-based airline with a fleet that includes the Avro RJ85!
This Avro RJ85 is ZS-TCO and was delivered in 2001 to Air Botnia, but now flies for Airlink, which is an airline based in Johannesburg, South Africa.
Originally called the BAe-146, the airplane was improved upon in 1992 (getting, among other things, new engines) and became the Avro RJ85. Learn more about the history of the Avro RJ85 in this video while you're seeing what it's like to fly in a regional jet in Southern Africa.
This video includes the BAe-146 Takeoff. And you'll even see this Avro RJ85 Landing!
This four-engined regional jet is an AvGeek's dream! The video highlights the airplane itself, the seats, the food, and the service onboard.

I was a flight attendant for PSA and worked this aircraft often. They eventually held 83 passengers at 5 across seating and about 33 inches of leg room. The first day of operations, we operated 2 BAE146-200s flying turn arounds from OAK to BUR. We also had a BAE factory mechanic flying jump seat for any issues. I think I still have a First Flight Certificate that we handed out to all passengers that day in 1984. The aircraft got quite a lot of attention each time we landed. Even Southwest and Air Cal pilots came over to take a look. Because of the quiet operations and short field performance, PSA was able to initiate the first commercial jet service out of CCR Concord Buchanan Field in Contra Costa County. Great memories! Thanks for the video!

I have had the privilege of not only flying this aircraft but actually jumping out of it. Several of us had the chance to do a HALO at 36.000 ft on the military version of this excellent aircraft. I talked the pilot into letting me take the right seat and fly to our jump point. I love the way this bird handles. I don't enjoy jumping out of a perfectly good aircraft but, it was part of my skill set and I was paid hazardous duty pay and it was never will be enough. If I had this aircraft I could do many things that would benefit both myself and the people who employed me. this beast is an all-around workhorse, in both passenger and cargo hauling. I am sorry they stopped making them.

Hi I worked for BAe for many years as Senior Field Service Rep for both the 146 and RJ. How I miss those days. Worked all over the world with this great aircraft. Flown thousands of hours on it. Did many demonstration tours worldwide and was privileged to have flown it many times. It didn't need thrust reversers because of the relatively low landing speed because of the large flaps and assisted by the speed brake, and the very powerful carbon brakes. Glad to see how many people appreciate it. Its getting long in the tooth now and many have met there fate at the hands of the scrap metal merchants. Hopefully the few operators left will keep them flying for a few years yet. Some have been converted to arial water bombers, so they should be operating for many years into the future.
once again great video and its a pleasure to see that very many people still enjoy it.

I had the privilege of working on the design of this aircraft from 1975 to 1992, from the original design and development, through to certification and then in-service support. I was responsible for some of the systems including the hydraulic and oxygen systems. So the aircraft has a very special place in my heart. I retired last year from Airbus, having worked in the industry for 47 years.

I enjoyed the magic trick with the sound effects making the food appear. Those are the touches that make your videos extra special and unique. Love it! Thanks, Jeb! 👍👏👏
As a side note, I remember that Eastern Airlines called their 727 “Whisperjet” which was painted across the side of the tail engine intake.

Another great video! I flew the Bae146 in 2015 from Lima to Cusco in Peru. I was so impressed by the smoothness of the flight and also couldn't believe the great comfortable seats on Star Peru! 4 engines seems overkill, but man.. what a great experience. Hopefully I'll be able to fly this plane again!

Really nice to see some these still flying. Flew on the PSA BAE-146 many times when they were first introduced and loved them. I was sad to see the type give way to regional twins, but totally get that maintenance of 4 engines is twice as expensive as it would be for a twin. Good video. They can’t all be Cathay or Emirates first class after all!

Love the RJ85 / BAe 146. Britain needs to re-enter the aircraft manufacturing scene and make ground-breaking aeroplanes again. I hope you enjoy Botswana! There's a town in the Northern Cape near the Botswana border called "Hotazel" - Someone had a sense of humour when they named it. If you fly to Namibia, look out for the kaleidoscope of pinks, yellows, greys and browns seen from a plane in the Kalahari desert.

    • @Lyxzzzzzzzzzzzzz1

Well it has four engines it will be efficient unless it is full so a plane like an A220 will be a good replacement

    • @TrainNutter
      @TrainNutter 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

There was going to be a replacement called the RJX (RJX100 Prototype is on display at Manchester airport). Due to poor timing as the industry was recovering after 9/11, it never entered production and the airlines who ordered it backed out.

It was actually Northwest Airlink - Mesaba Airlines that operated them. They were on the Duluth - Minneapolis route all the time also. Flew on one with air canada to Toronto back in the early 2000. Great bird. I wish there were more in use in the states

I had a chance to fly on the Bae 146 jet flown by Air Wisconsin back in the 80's in and out of Fort Wayne Baer Field back then. The airport is now referred as Fort Wayne International Airport.
