Im a chippy on price, still learning but these bricklayers definately seem to be on way more here in the east midlands, our prices aint changed since covid, glad to just have work tbh, barely any apprentices for roofing so feeling in demand right now
Brickies definitely got it cushty at the moment. Good money to be earned, no worries about getting 5-10k of tools nicked out of your van. Their trade got screwed over in the last recession because it relies heavily on housebuilding whereas we adapted to other aspects of the industry. Fair play to them for holding the house builders to ransom and sticking together. Very rarely will a bricky jump on something another has started and if they do it’s for double the price.
Looks class that Milwaukee cutter, Changy. Miles easier than starting up the Stihl without the fear of smashing your elbow against a standard, wall or handrail etc.. Not to mention the irritating sound as the Stihl ticks over👌 Pull trigger and go. The time it will save and convenience will pay for itself in no time👍. Nice to see you happy in your graft mate

I still prefer the stihl TS 400, over the years I've owned and used just about all of them and in my opinion the TS 400 is the best and most reliable cutting machine ever made
Nice job. You make it look easy. I didn't realise all those new build arches were pre formed. Can you build them the old fashioned way?.... Do you ever do any residential work with any detailing (Herringbone, tile creasing, fire places etc?)
alreet there Changy, ive noticed a few brickies now dont even spread the bed joint, or the cross joint - they just plonk the trowel-full down, 1 trowel is enough for 1 brick, u nip the cross-joint from the bed mortar and lay the brick. looks absolutely loads quicker than the way ive been trained to do it (spreading the bed etc) - I shud be able to adjust my style & pick that up - what u reckon, take me a a few weeks? old hand an all that...
Good skills matey blimey I've built some arches in my time but that's a cool way of doing things times move on I suppose that's whey I'm out of it now, really like that saw LOl.
You don't need the stands and boards,good to have but you can use bricks blocks and cuts of ply or flooring so you don't need grands to start,if your spending that on spot boards and stands then you must have more money than sense, atb pal from glasgow
It's a case of yeah you can get away with a basic tool set (as long as you can build with a level some cant these days) but the more you invest in your tools the more efficiently you work and the more money you make.
Learned Bricklayer trade from my pap that started from the bottom and is now partial owner of Glenn Gary Brick. Did it for almost 10 years but got interested in the commercial HVAC and Steamfitters Union. As much of a pain it was to start a new job, the sense of accomplishment you feel when you get right around the halfway point of a job all the way to the point of completion is a great feeling. Pay was good but not good enough to have to deal with all the pos workers that can't be taught how to even do their job. I swear, for every 1 good and competent bricklayer there's 10 that are worthless.
I started work at 15 as, a, bricklaying apprentice I signed up for 7yrs this, was reduced to 5yrs then 3yrs however I was only on 95% of the bricklayers wages until I had finished my apprenticeship at the age of 22. I finished my college with a credit in my craft exam and a Distinction in my advanced craft.
@@SoochT unfortunately the CITB is reluctant to provide employers the needed funding to have an apprentice going to college. They prefer to fund white collar employees. There are courses at colleges for basic training you can get a certificate to prove you have attended the course which ends in a practical exam which is then marked for your grade similar to an apprenticeship. The teaching of trades has been neglected for decades and now there is a chronic shortage. It does not suit many these days when it's cold wet and windy they would sooner be in an office
Brickies all seem to keep there prices similar to each other , and don’t seem frightened to put them up . Quite a few years back I was renovating a house , went in one morning and it had been trashed they got threw a window i screwed screws into some plywood put it under window next day it had been moved found out who was breaking in local thief screw went straight through his foot
Question mate. I worked on daywork sites or did private jobs. Never did much site price work. You look like your on your own a lot, not in a 2 and 1 or 3 and 1 gang. Do the site agents expect you to supply gangs when you get these contracts? Just curious. Cheers.

Bricklayer tools aren't cheap but compared to a mechanics kit they are. I just presume every builder has every type of drill, impact driver, wrench, grinder, cut off saw etc etc. Hand tools for days. Ime just a diy er and I own all that stuff and much more. Can't be a decent diy er without 10k to 20k in tools. (Multi trade including mechanics or not) Let alone a half decent tradesman. Just the van alone could cost that! Let alone the tools

The saying a bad craftsman blames his tools comes from delusional customers who can't do the job but can slander someone who can. Fact is. You would struggle getting such an accurate clean cut without a cut off saw and find it very slow fixing things with a just flat head screwdriver and tape measure! So much so the customer would slander you for not having the tool for the job 🤣. Some people are just artisans, they don't just have 1 trades worth of skill but multiple and also all the kit to back it up.

the thing with traids is they use the branded crap. you can get the same quality with OEM tools think of it like this a brick saw £600 branded may last 3 years. a £200 OEM may last the same time if not more. but you builders like your brand names. you can get a petrol saw for even cheaper as for brick stands you dont need them as you just seen on the vid they are stacked up anyway. 20 for the angle finder thing toolstation £5 the same thing
The wall plate should be joined using half lapped joints, not butt jointed. Same at the corners. If you paid £20 for that bevel I've got a bridge you can buy. You can get a Shinwa bevel for £20.
Hiya mate, there is an easier way to do your cuts before you start the arch, instead of bedding a brick on mortar, forget the mortar lay the brick on top of the brick, and move it so you have given it two cross joints, then when you bed it down after you have cut it, it is then perfect 👍, trained by a very old schooler I was
@@PavanaBuild So let's say you have a line set up on an angle, and you want to mark your brick against that string line, some people bed the brick on mortar and then mark the brick with a pencil, well forget bedding the brick on anything, just place the brick on top of a dry bed, and move the brick across to the line, leaving a cap of two cross joints, approx 20 mm, mark the brick with a pencil, cut it and bed it down on mortar, and it will be perfect 👍
yea the battery saw is very handy , i bought a Husqvarna but regret it battery's are more expensive than the DeWalt or Milwaukee batterys and you dont have the choice of tools .

How does a bricklaying gang get started? Say 2:1, you go up to a site agent & give a price for a section? Or you go up to the main bricklaying sub contractor, who'll allocate you a section/price?
How comes brickies don't build with window/door formers in ? Because 9 times out of 10 when there is no former or brace bar on it doesn't fit must be easier to with them in ..there must be reason, the normal excuse is none here but you go down to check and there is loads, I really don't get it
No weep holes up the side of the arches ? It’s a long run of damp with no outlets and don’t the arch bricks stain with mortar residue that’s left on after you’ve smeared them with a dirty sponge ? Just asking

Joiners years ago who built the churches and good old buildings i would say was very clever in deed super trades men back then!!! Chippys today have it easy on site the roofs come half built 🤣🤣 id rather be a bricky least i dont have to take 100 + tools out me van on the night🤔🤣😁

Most places are now going with the spray insulation that can just be pumped straight into a subsection from a pressurized hose. The builders will have specific points of the wall where they will leave a small opening for it to be pumped in. I got to watch the process one time and it's pretty crazy because it comes out as like a straight up liquid that forces itself into any open space and then will start instantly expanding and forming as a solid.
You Should Not Have to justify anything to anyone. You have your price for using your skills working in all kinds of weather so if people don't want to pay they should try it themselves if they have the skills.
The disc cutter looks the business. You might as well have cut the half-laps since you had the skilly there, otherwise a £5 hand saw would have done you.
be honest, spot board stands not needed, plastic boards not needed, bricklaying has been going on for thousands of years without all that. basic tools trowel, hammer n bolster, set of lines and a square
I do exactly the same as you, so it’s not criticism, but when posting videos -dust mask ? Dust suppression, goggles, ear plugs? Won’t be long before HSE will be using TH-cam as evidence the way the world is going
I always wonder why skilled builder don't do more of their own projects, I know a lot do, but surely it'd be a good source of income on the side to build your own houses

I’m in design / land development myself and I’ve been interested in taking the self employed route for a long while, but the thought of starting a site on my own scares me to say the least, as I’m someone with a good technical background (I can take a site through planning, do a full set of detailed design drawings (drainage, external works, foundations, temp works you name it), but I’ve never so much as touched a trowel. But as you say land is the main issue, like gold dust these days.
Wouldn’t bother reacting to comments like that mate. I probably got £10k of tools and stock…but that’s nothing compared to the running costs of having a business and being self employed. People getting jealous as brickies currently creaming the cash…..but as you’ve mentioned before it won’t always be this high and make the most of it while it lasts. After COVID how any tradesmen can begrudge another doing well baffles me
I thought that was pretty crazy too. He's probably an independent contractor of some kind that just ignores safety procedure. What's shitty is if he doesn't care for his health that's perfectly fine but everyone around has to suffer with that brick in the air. If someone was dry cutting a ton of brick on any of the construction jobs I did when I was younger there would be a fist fight from the other tradesmen.
I'm guessing to have a hose end on your wetsaw isn't practical on building site, but as a builder wouldn't be without my wetsaw nowadays a must a 1200 bucks they just cut in such a different way to the old style and battery power unbelievable hope you keep ya eyes on it!! A decent laser - Leica or Topcon is £700+ / Bell Mixer £550.. a decent wheel barrow is £100 + the list is long and expensive ;)

Personally i would of used a mortar gun for the arch less mess no stains but hey ho different strokes for different folks

How does a bricklaying gang get started? Say 2:1, you go up to a site agent & give a price for a section? Or you go up to the main bricklaying sub contractor, who'll allocate you a section/price?
How comes brickies don't build with window/door formers in ? Because 9 times out of 10 when there is no former or brace bar on it doesn't fit must be easier to with them in ..there must be reason, the normal excuse is none here but you go down to check and there is loads, I really don't get it

No weep holes up the side of the arches ? It’s a long run of damp with no outlets and don’t the arch bricks stain with mortar residue that’s left on after you’ve smeared them with a dirty sponge ? Just asking
There are weeps if you look closely and they are good when it's washed down or I wouldn't do it
@@OffTheTrowel you might want to tell people the arches need washing off at some stage as I’m sure someone will copy you and not realise ,and yeah the weeps are at the end of the tray but not against the side of the arch a shitty inspector might RI you for that on a bad day

Joiners years ago who built the churches and good old buildings i would say was very clever in deed super trades men back then!!! Chippys today have it easy on site the roofs come half built 🤣🤣 id rather be a bricky least i dont have to take 100 + tools out me van on the night🤔🤣😁
Yeah it is shit how many tools we need but at least we can work all year. Some roofs are complicated. Still have to cut jack rafters in.

Most places are now going with the spray insulation that can just be pumped straight into a subsection from a pressurized hose. The builders will have specific points of the wall where they will leave a small opening for it to be pumped in. I got to watch the process one time and it's pretty crazy because it comes out as like a straight up liquid that forces itself into any open space and then will start instantly expanding and forming as a solid.
You Should Not Have to justify anything to anyone. You have your price for using your skills working in all kinds of weather so if people don't want to pay they should try it themselves if they have the skills.
The disc cutter looks the business. You might as well have cut the half-laps since you had the skilly there, otherwise a £5 hand saw would have done you.

Does the top plate wood get fixed to the blocks with a mechanical fixing, or is it essentially stuck down with the mortar? Genuine question.
Later on they will use galvanised tie down straps - about 3ft long - and fix it to the wall. Fixed in to each course of block.

dont see the point in bedding the wall plate on if your going to crack it off the joint to half lap later.

I’m in design / land development myself and I’ve been interested in taking the self employed route for a long while, but the thought of starting a site on my own scares me to say the least, as I’m someone with a good technical background (I can take a site through planning, do a full set of detailed design drawings (drainage, external works, foundations, temp works you name it), but I’ve never so much as touched a trowel. But as you say land is the main issue, like gold dust these days.

Wouldn’t bother reacting to comments like that mate. I probably got £10k of tools and stock…but that’s nothing compared to the running costs of having a business and being self employed. People getting jealous as brickies currently creaming the cash…..but as you’ve mentioned before it won’t always be this high and make the most of it while it lasts. After COVID how any tradesmen can begrudge another doing well baffles me

I thought that was pretty crazy too. He's probably an independent contractor of some kind that just ignores safety procedure. What's shitty is if he doesn't care for his health that's perfectly fine but everyone around has to suffer with that brick in the air. If someone was dry cutting a ton of brick on any of the construction jobs I did when I was younger there would be a fist fight from the other tradesmen.

I'm guessing to have a hose end on your wetsaw isn't practical on building site, but as a builder wouldn't be without my wetsaw nowadays a must a 1200 bucks they just cut in such a different way to the old style and battery power unbelievable hope you keep ya eyes on it!!
Don't take to much notice of that comment as tools of the today builder/bricklayer will amount in the thousands
