My 170 was broke in properly by the book.. only dragged it ONCE, put fresh oil as any good drag racer would.. and changed it .. even after only one pass.. at 2,700 miles it went into limp mode.. did weird things.. long story short.. had metal in oil filter.. $58k later all covered under warranty I had a new engine....
Hey! No room for real stories and facts here! Let's keep this to Raiti's opinions. You should've changed your oil 27 times before you drove it. He said so.
You could easily ask Dodge if any of the issues were true but obviously you didn’t or know the gearing in the 2018 and 2023 Demon’s are the same or that 2018 Demon’s have ran over 200mph.
Engine problems are nothing new at dodge and their top of the line cars. Ask me and the other Gen5 Viper owners that were spinning bearings left and right!
It has failures too. I have been blessed to own both, and while I love BOTH, the Demon 170 is a beast and its all I drag now. Mine is bullet proof and it was broken-in correctly before I dragged it - the full 1,500 miles.
Love your content Joe but this is a bad take. They have serious issues that are well documented. I understand you own a dodge but lets call a spade a spade.
I'm more concerned about multiple people, with video proof, claiming that their Hellcats and Hellcat Redeyes can't come close to putting out the 717 or 797 hp as advertised by Dodge. They put them on Dynos that never give them a reading that breaks 600 hp for either trim, so they will put it on another Dyno for a "2nd opinion". The readings never change significantly and surely don't approach the 700's. Many might say "So what? When and where are you ever gonna use that kinda HP??" That's not the problem. The problem is that Dodge either made false statements about the performance of their cars or the QC towards the end of their legendary V8 driven muscle car era was heavily compromised.
But, RACERX did not break his Demon 170 in the FULL 1,500 miles recommended by Dodge before dragging. In fact, Dodge warns you that you can DAMAGE your engine if you dont follow their written break-in procedure. So, you cannot blame Dodge for his engine failure at all. In fact, Dodge could have denied warrannty coverage but to their credit they honored the warranty if know their break-in was not followed correctly.
Gaslighting for Stellantis? Clearly you were bought and paid for. Meet up face to face with TK, Butter and OC motivor and tell them they are lying to their faces.

Totally agree about the 200mph top speed. However, the main reason people are upset is because Dodge advertised it as over 200 mph both on Dodge Garage and on its teaser ads...
Sadly for Demon 170 ... Mexican Stelantis factories forgot to put ball bearings in some engines (all Hemies are made there now) ... I Hope that yours has all the parts and you can enjoy it without any problem, but it will depreciate badly as all late Stelantis creations due to inconsistent quality issue. There are already such cases that badly affect car value ... I was the one to get the spec sheet first posted for the white knuckle demon “replacement” in a conversation with the mak haik gm in Texas when the soldier got screwed. Butter actually sourced my thread in his video but my info was redacted
@user-og1tb5pe2t yes....from the factory but once you put the ecm from the crate in all of that goes away. If they didn't get the crate option we'll their demon is limited. I have the crate option and it's all installed. Full 840hp with race gas and a top speed of 211mph. Plenty of videos showing the crate option cars doing 211mph
Spot on. My dad drilled regular car maintenance into my young skull growing up. Change the fluids on schedule and/or according to how used. Especially the oil. Cheap insurance and playing with the toys maintaining 'em can be enjoyable...especially doing it yourself, you know it's done right. A neighbor told me I didn't need to change the oil as often as I do (in the STI, 3000 miles max when daily driving). Those turbo's generate a lot of heat and heat breaks down oil, no matter how good the synthetic is. And it's a good time to check out the underside and other fluids as well. And if there is an issue, better (and cheaper) to catch it early. Enjoy the vid. Love the whine on that Demon!
ya many of these small turbo engines are going to see some wear compared to the non turbo engines, precisely for the reasons you stated and the ignorance of people not taking that into consideration. It's why i bought a camry with a 2.5 inline four cylinder with no turbo. Wanted simplicity and longevity and if you want more tech you make sure you treat it like you stated above, especially if you drive in a spirited manner.
@@RaitisRides Reading the comments, not really fair to you. The stuff you talked about was all true, gearing the way you use the vehicle and tires ect. How many miles on them? If less than 1,500 before they were dragged its no wonder they failed. Demon 170 manual states you need to break-in 1,500 miles before dragging or you risk engine failure. See Demon 170 Manual Supplement, Page 5. Where is the evidence establishing the hand full of failures were in Demon 170's that were broken in correctly, including the full 1,500 miles? Pleaes share it fully, including repair order and millage at time of repair if you would be so kind.
Butta's video made me check out yours. I heard nothing but your opinions. Where are your facts to support what you're saying? You didn’t debunk anything here. If Butta and others are lying, tell us the truth.
Where is the "evidence" of engine failures AFTER the full 1,500 Dodge Demon 170 break-in period was met as set forth in the Demon 170n manual supplement, page 5? Good luck finding one, example, as I have not. I broke mine in per the manual before dragging it the full 1,500 miles, and I have ZERO problems as have many other Demon 170 owners. You cant blame Dodge when their break-in instruciton were ignored by certain owners.
1. The Demon is geared for >200MPH. If tires are rated for 149MPH, they will not explode at 150MPH. In fact, they will most likely be fine at >200MPH. However, proper tire speed rated tires are required for a vehicle to be sold by an OEM in the U.S.
The top speed is electronically limited to 149 mph, not 169 mph... The tune is programmed to allow the car to briefly go over the governed speed of 149 mph up to 151.2 MPH to hit its advertised 8.91-second quarter mile time.
Stop moderating and deleting comments, Raiti. If you are a true car guy at heart, it is only fair that folks hear both sides of the story. You went into this knowing full well the can of worms it was going to open.
Tim K, during the Demon 170 press event, I believe, said it had a 215 mph top speed. The oil is the main cause for engine failure due to E85 alcohol getting into the oil during drag strip runs. An oil catch can would probably catch some of this blow by. As far as no bearings in the engine, that has to be BS because I believe all Demon 170 engines are run before they are sent to the factory for installation.
@RaitisRides must have been in one of Dodges ads. I've seen it, and I do believe it to be misleading to people who actually buy high horsepower cars for top speed. Either way, I'm still a fan of the Demon 170 cause it's too cool not to be one of my Mopar favorites.
I bet you the press event is right but they left out probably have to gear up quite a bit to get 215 out of it...just common sense 😂... Everybody should buy a hybrid😂😂
Yeah, Joe, it’s really easy dodge bullshitted everybody and then every dealer played mine games with everybody and tried bending them over and now the motors are starting a grenade and they only made 3000 of them. Seems like it should’ve been a recall that’s my personal opinion.
With 100k in mark ups, every single aspect of that car better be available to me. All 1000hp and the ability to use all of the odometer. Dealership were scamming people out of money, lying about their product, while knowing that the product could never meet their advertising.....is that what you are saying??? The lawsuit sounds very justified
Yea, the real issue is there has been no evidence I have seen so far of engine failures where the owner followed Dodge's full 1,500 mile break-in period. See Dodge Demon Manual Supplement, Page 5. Show me one of those examples with proof, like work order with Demon 170 millage shown. You cant blame Dodge for engine failures were owner did not follow proper break-in procedures.
There's no way an engine is going to live more than 5 minutes missing a rod bearing. And you would definitely hear the massive knocking. I don't believe the story. I am a long time Mopar fanatic and one problem area in many 60's cars and the modern Hemi is they use a front sump oil pan. Chrysler did this because of the steering set up. If you're running 10's 11's 12"s you're not going to have a problem but and a big but is if you're deep into the 9's you're probably going to have oil starvation. Chrysler made some great high quality baffled pans to fix this. The Hellcat pans are very impressive but they are still a front sump pan. It's just the laws of physics. As far as the other problems we all know about the cost cutting going on at Stellantis. I have an 18 Challenger Hellcat wide body manual with 22,000 miles and the only problem I had was at 3,000 miles the front drivers side fender flare came loose. This was the first year of production for the wide body so you have to expect some flaws. My brother has a 23 Challenger Scat Pack and he just had problems with two windshields cracking. These are great cars just beware of lot rot.
I have heard that from engine builder after engine builder. And where is a copy of the complete repair order so it can be verified with the dealer? Good look findig it. And, even if true, there are always a hand full of defective engines in all model years. Does anybody really believe the 2018 Demon has zero failure? LOL
Really, and where are your facts? How many engine failures occurred after the owner's DEMON 170 was broken in the full 1,500 miles per the Demon 170 manual? Please post one example. So far I have seen NONE. And, Dodge warns ever Demon 170 owner of possible engine damage if they do not follow the break-in procedure. That critical fact has been left out of almost all TH-cam videos. Wonder what? HMMM.
I'm so disappointed. My dad and I like your channel, but this is simply objectively wrong. If you're going to DEBUNK things, you NEED facts and proof. Otherwise, it's just opinions.
@RaitisRides absolutely bud, it's super unfortunate that demon 170 engines are blowing, but you are right in the sense that any engine making 1000+ hp is gonna be a liability. I doubt anyone with the money and desire to buy a demon 170 would skip out on regular maintenance, though. Lastly thx for the camaro vids. Yeah especially when they come out of the factory missing bearings and end up blowing up inside the first 1000 miles, where the car is being driven lightly.
@@MeetTheSLAYER just read another comment here that another guy’s demon blew the engine at 2,700 miles but Dodge didn’t hesitate to put a brand new engine in at a cost of over $50,000.

I just bought a Challenger last week! Also bought a CarMax 5 year warranty so I can just enjoy the car. I totally agree with what you said with reading stuff online.
All valid points Joe ! +++++ Old saying is true and especially for the internet --- (Believe 1/2 of what you see and 1/3 of what you hear.) Also very true that the oil that they put in at the factory is (break in oil) and it is a different formula from the oil you buy at an auto parts store and is made to help the piston rings seat into the cylinders, bearings, etc. and you run it mildly (not racing) for the miles that the car company recommends and then you get the oil changed (dealership where you bought it is best) so the first few oil changes are on record for warranty purposes if you have issues down the road. You are spot on and so very true on the factory oil being break in oil, same weight oil but the formula package is totally different.
In order for you to debunk you will need hard fact to back it up, not personal opinions. This video here was unnecessary and misleading. By far the worst video you could have posted. Best advice in my opinion is to continue reviewing vehicles like you should because you are of course a car review channel. You need to admit to your own mistake.
@@RaitisRides Anyone could have experience to anything, but bringing facts is another thing. Experience and Facts, two totally different things. One is opinion base and the other is not.
Raiti is talking out of the wrong hole here. My guess is he just bought a Demon 170 and he wants to do his part (after not doing any research) to ensure his vehicle holds value - or is just simply living in some mental delusion. I can put you in touch with a tech who will disagree with nearly everything you said and PROVE that these vehicles are limited by the PCM to 149mph. They have most definitely at the very least had some manufacturing/qc issues.
The 170 has the same gearing as the other variants of hemi challengers that go around 200 miles an hour. Top speed of the Mickey Thompsons are rated at 149mph and the car goes over 150 in the 1/4 mile briefly. The Camaro only had 4 gears not 8 speeds which has a better offering of gearing. The early gen Hellcats had a different rear gear 2.62 and had an option to add the more known 2018 Demon/Redeye rear gear 3.09. The 2018 Demon goes 203mph so the gearing has nothing to do with it. This is a factory made 1025 HP street drivable drag car. Dodge advertise one thing and gave something different and hence the reason for the lawsuit. The manufacturer Dodge gave recommendations on break in and how to maintain. Bad Harmonic balancers are not due to oil change, and plug gaps don't have anything to do with oil changes. Going into reading all the sources, is an option and many watch content to see good about a vehicle etc.. Its like listening to your opinion and not so accurate information you put in this video. Curious...if your Demon has any issues will it be a bunch of debunkable information or it just didn't really happen.

Absolutely killer car, Joe! Three words could eliminate the blown engines, and they are dry sump oiling. If you drag race repeatedly, the extreme acceleration of this car causes the oil to slosh to the back of the oil pan. Baffling helps, I think there may be aftermarket pans for that engine that have more extreme baffling and more capacity, but I’m not sure. Now, I think this car was made to race, but it sure could’ve use dry sump oiling, even though that’s rare on production cars. Mostly the Corvette is the only one that uses dry sump oiling. Certain upgraded model Corvettes. One racer trick, and I don’t know if it’s safe for that engine, is to add an extra quart of oil on race day so you have another quart of oil to slosh back. Changing the oil extra is a great idea that Joe has. There could be small, metallic shavings or particles in there after racing. But, driving around for fun, the way Joe does, is not gonna break down that engine probably ever.

Guys have been running high HP gen3 hemi cars for a while now. There secret? A lot of them guys are experts or know experts who tune and build performance cars for a living. Point is , the dealership is not a performance shop, and the customer can't buy the experience it takes to properly care for a 1000+ HP factory racecar. It takes special care... You have to follow a unique maintenance schedule for sure.. on a car like the demon you need to check the oil often and change as needed. Check the plugs often. Make sure the fuel mixture is correct... Must also have afr gauge and boost gauge visible at all times. Must track oil temps too. If you're not good at checking or tracking these things you bought the wrong car.
Thanks @RaitisRides. I respect the other TH-camrs opinions on this stuff. But when you have guys claiming that these engine problems such as loose or missing bearings are from the factory, you know they are lacking experience in the world of drag racing and high performance engines. Tuning issues caused by improper gapping of plugs, poor e85 mix(pump gas e85 is almost never exact). Can definitely cause some serious engine issues in a boosted engine due to detonation (spark knock). But they shouldn't take my word for it. They need to find a guy or gal with some years of engine tuning to help them! Demon 170 owners at a certain point, need to take matters into their own hands!

True

It has failures too. I have been blessed to own both, and while I love BOTH, the Demon 170 is a beast and its all I drag now. Mine is bullet proof and it was broken-in correctly before I dragged it - the full 1,500 miles.
Disagree 100%
Love your content Joe but this is a bad take. They have serious issues that are well documented. I understand you own a dodge but lets call a spade a spade.
I never used the word every one or all.
Thanks for sharing those points
You are confusing crank horsepower to wheel horsepower ,2 completely different things and that goes for all manufacturers, not just Dodge
Racer X had issues at the track....w/ his Demon 170...check out his channel. ....
Will do
But, RACERX did not break his Demon 170 in the FULL 1,500 miles recommended by Dodge before dragging.
@@ShawnTucker-v9x Dodge admitted to Racer X he did nothing wrong.

You’re limited to the speed rating of your tires.

To avoid lawsuits, you’ve gotta limit it to the speed rating of the tires.
Point blank. End of discussion.
The top speed is electronically limited to 149 mph, not 169 mph... The tune is programmed to allow the car to briefly go over the governed speed of 149 mph up to 151.2 MPH to hit its advertised 8.91-second quarter mile time.
Sounds good to me

If you are a true car guy at heart, it is only fair that folks hear both sides of the story. You went into this knowing full well the can of worms it was going to open.
I am not deleting anything. Look through the comments and I have been responding.
I was at the launch and no one said anything about 215 MPH

I really appreciate you tuning in
You can’t debunk the real issues 🤣
And what are those
Yea, the real issue is there has been no evidence I have seen so far of engine failures where the owner followed Dodge's full 1,500 mile break-in period. See Dodge Demon Manual Supplement, Page 5. Show me one of those examples with proof, like work order with Demon 170 millage shown. You cant blame Dodge for engine failures were owner did not follow proper break-in procedures.
Destroyer gray is a gorgeous color.
You have great taste

Thanks for sharing that great commentary

You would think that you would get your facts right before posting videos unless Stellantis paid you off
Yes I was paid a billion monopoly dollars by Stellantis.

Thanks for your great insight Dan!

To debunk myths and do a deep dive requires research. You did none of that. You have no proof of anything you mentioned, then expect people to believe it.
You're mention of the gear ratios causing a lower top speed Reveal Your lack of knowledge.
Amateur move, brother.
The channels you are referring to have brought receipts...
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. We will all believe what we want to believe
Love your video Joe
I appreciate you so very much
@@RaitisRides Welcome
This video is sponsored and paid for by Stellantis. This content is so false and I’m glad I don’t follow this tool. Only here because of Butter and OC where the real truth comes from 💯
Yep I am secret Stellantis agent sent back in time from the future.
Wow, Wow, Wow, Love it Joe!
You are the man Brent
That it's a 1/4 mile car doesn't excuse Dodge from lying about top speed.
Companies do that all the time.
There was no lie. Car is CAPABLE OF DOING SO.
The tires, however, THAT IT LEAVES THE ASSEMBLY LINE ON, are NOT.
@@linkinl979 Not really, the driveshaft is another reason it’s limited to 149 mph
Thank you Sir, lot of life lessons here.
I’m grateful I can share it with you
Wow, you’re removing comments now…
I haven't removed anything. TH-cam will place things for approval if it is up to them.

My car is the one that was missing the bearing from the factory. $58K bill pick up completed by Dodge. The car is setting in my garage with the new engine. The car was absolutely without a doubt missing the bearing. Do you think Dodge would replace the engine on a "maybe it was missing a bearing"?
Sorry to hear about your engine issue. I am so glad that i was handled.
@@RaitisRides Thank you
Loving these Raiti's Rants! Hope to hear more in the future i can tell you really know your stuff :)
That means the world Jared! Stay tuned!
@@RaitisRides My pleasure bud
@@JaredGenesis444you are awesome

Great video love your work and the challenger I’ve owned 3
Best cars
I really appreciate you saying that
Hey, joe you are 100% right All cars may have issues from time to time if they aren't maintain properly, i think the 170 is a winner, i would keep the car if I were you, My friend.😅😅😅.
Good call Dejon
I feel like Dodge will make a Last Last Last Call V8
It’s over! Electric & Hurricane engine are next.
@@RaitisRides Barf-a-thon
At this rate, Stellantis will either sell Dodge off or go bankrupt.
You are correct. The Durango Hemi last call is incoming..😁
@@smitty858either way Dodge will be bankrupt and bought again.
Always get your info from a good, reliable source. Joe is one of the best.
I appreciate that David!
I agree with Joe. Don't air your problems on the internet. Handle them yourself. I smile when Joe goes on throttle.
It’s great to have you ride shotgun
Thanks for debunking facts with your feelings. 😊
Thanks for sharing your feelings about my feelings.
Rati everything you stated is Opinion Base. Not anything was a fact you stated smh.
Everyone has their opinions.
Really, and where is your "evidence". How many Demon 170 engines failed after they were broken-in the full 1,500 miles recommended in the Demon 170 manual? Dodge warned every owner in writing of engine failure if their 1,500 break-in was not followed.
I would teach young ppl to mind their own business and keep quiet 😂
Is that the world you really want to live with?
@@RaitisRides thanks for questioning this Raiti! You know minding my own business and keeping my mouth shut has definitely done me well in life. Meditating every morning really zen me out man to the point where I just don't react anymore. I think people speak too much without thinking specially this Generation. And people online focus too much on others people's business instead of their own. Like people ppl probably bash you for buying thus car but in the end its not their business. U buy whatever u desire. It's your maaaaaheny 😆 love your vids my friend!
People blow motors at the end was the best part.
There will always be motors being blown
I’m glad to see you’re able to afford all these great cars. Keep up the good work and enjoy the fruits of your labor brother ✊🏻
Thank you my friend! Hard work pays off!
This demon 170 was plagued all thanks to Stallantis
That is what some believe
How ironic would it be if his next 170 video, Joe says his motor crapped out lol. I don’t hope that happens, but it would show Joe that there is truth to the issues owners have had.
Hey things do happen. I never said it was impossible.
@@RaitisRides that they do. Love your content, and your reviews are actually the reason why my wife and I purchased a Wagoneer after watching your video when you first jumped in one!
But I hope that we all do our due diligence in researching about issues on vehicles we purchase. Because at the end of the day, the consumers have to live with our purchases 🙏🏻
@@HondaHighwayI’m a consumer just like you. Nothing is given to me by anyone.

2023 Demom 170 should have been Recalled..Beautiful car just put together like Dog 💩
Facts! Most people have no idea how poorly it was built.
Recalled?
@@voodoodiecastactually that is an opinion
@@RaitisRides No recall because Stellantis doesn’t give a damn. 2023 Dodge products have quality issues, door panels peeling off, cracked windshields, rear end doesn’t have some adhesive? UAW workers might sabotge some of these models due to the issues they have with Stellantis and Stellantis laying off alot of people. Stellantis messed up CDJR real bad.
Raitis Bike channel, nearly spat my coffee out.Love the Dodge.🇦🇺
Thanks for being so supportive
Some brands are more reliable than others but all cars require maintenance, so I wouldn't generalize 🤷🏻♂
So very true
Joe, will you please take us all on a ride in the GT350R? Please!!! I still remember the passion you had for that car. Do you still have it? Best car review channel on TH-cam!!!
I sure do still have her! I will get that together for you!
@@RaitisRides Thank you sir. When I subscribed to your channel about a year and a half ago I found your videos of taking delivery on her. That car changed my life so much I went out and bought a new Mustang GT!! It’s not the vaunted Voodoo, but that Coyote will suffice. ✌️
@@MrMashman93I test drove a 2018, and I really dug the Coyote! But $40K put it out of my reach. I didn't exactly go "on throttle", but I blipped it bit.
You brought some good info
Thanks @RaitisRides. I respect the other TH-camrs opinions on this stuff. But when you have guys claiming that these engine problems such as loose or missing bearings are from the factory, you know they are lacking experience in the world of drag racing and high performance engines. Tuning issues caused by improper gapping of plugs, poor e85 mix(pump gas e85 is almost never exact). Can definitely cause some serious engine issues in a boosted engine due to detonation (spark knock). But they shouldn't take my word for it. They need to find a guy or gal with some years of engine tuning to help them! Demon 170 owners at a certain point, need to take matters into their own hands!
for the price of a Demon170 i can just buy a m5 comp way better imo but i see the hype for the 170
I can buy a regular Hellcat that will smoke that electrical POS. who cares 😂
@@JuanTomlinson472 not the new m5 im talking bout a 2024
@@vaxsur The new m5 is slower than the previous one 😂
Call racer x or pacer x your choise
Refreshing take. People find more entertainment in drama... Look at any 1000 HP ICE car and you will see frequent maintenance is a must otherwise breakdowns will happen. The tolerances are so tight it's not going to stand up to constant abuse I don't care who built it...
You are so very right about that
That whine 🤤 🤤 🤤 Great video as always, Joe! Enjoy your Demon 😈
Thanks Brian! I appreciate it!
I threw a rod right through the block …not even pushing my dodge hard.
