Pool Cue Tip Installation - Professional vs Amateur

  • A properly installed tip is a thing of beauty. Unfortunately, you don't always have access to a professional tip installer. Rollie Williams visits Jon Smith at Society Billiards to compare a pro install against a do-it-yourself Cuetima-K tip installation.

    When I replaced my tip a few months ago I sanded my ferrule with 220 then 320 then 2000 looks like new! I got a LePro tip was cheap, I had my shaft 90 degrees inside my case when I replaced the tip which helped in the placement. I never used any razor blades I sanded it all, my first try it didnt stick because I didnt scuff it up, needless to say I got it right after lol I had no lathe to make things easier.

    I have been re-tipping my own snooker and English 8 ball cues for years and I'm really happy with how well I can do it. Gel glue is the secret to a good tip instal. I'm starting to play a little 9 ball and treated myself to a Viking Valhalla 200 cue and wanted to see if it was much different to re-tip an American pool cue. It is exactly the same. Wish I had access to that machine set up for doing it though. lol But I'm sure I can do it by hand pretty well when the time comes. Great video.

    It’s super easy to install without a lathe. Done it many times over the years. LePro tips are my go too. Using the right glue (loctite) goes a long way. Something to trim the edges and sand it down and then shape the top of the tip.

    • @trueblu8

    • @stevenm6200
      @stevenm6200 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@trueblu8 I’ve never had a pleasure of using Triangle tips, I just ordered a box of Le Pro, do they hit different or about the same in hardness? Usually I used the LePro for beginners and in expensive maintenance, if the players feel that they want a higher end tip like Predator or Kamui to McDermott or Tiger sniper then I’ll get that for the players here. I’ve recently switched the the McDermott Navigator Alpha and I Love it, I have a Zan pro Max hybrid and the Predator Victory, and the Tiger sniper from the Cynergy. I can never go back to the Le Pros personally but they are cost effective, thanks for the input, I’ll definitely order some Triangle and test them out!

    As a life time machinist replacing tips is easy. You can shape them with a belt sander n a file. 3m DP420 works better than superglue btw.

  • @wilkamania
    @wilkamania 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Installing tips by hand aren't that crazy but do require patience and careful touch. I've been replacing my own with exacto blades, gorilla glue or Loctite, post its (to cover ferrules) or masking tape/painter's tape, and various grades of sand paper. To be fair it takes a lot longer and you have to have a good eye and feel for any "mushrooming" parts. A brand new blade is typically required every time i replace a tip. I use the older previous blade to cut off the old tip and clean the ferrule.
    A machine/tip man is still far better.
    I'd take it to a cue guy, but my main cue guy passed in 2017. The other ones are located far in the suburbs and have the most random schedules so it's hard to get one down. There is one city mechanic that's got a regular schedule but he's pretty shoddy at his work (i've had a couple of tips pop off from him before).

    I respect the work and experience of this Pro totally, but there is one misperception about the glue or about
    superglue in general. That dry or warm/hot environment helps accelerating the hardening of superglue.
    While this is absolutely correct for 80-90% of glues, it is not the case for superglue (Cyanoacrylate),
    which polymerise in the presence of water!

    Well, the amateur sure got a lot help from the professional when he used that device; I would have rather John went and did something else while the other guy tried to repoint the cue himself with no advice/help from John, and THEN we could really see the difference between a professional job and an amateur job with the device…

    So basically the Pro saved the toolkit anyways. What a waste of money. I'd rather always pay the pro.

    Not really a great testament to the product if you need a pro and have to buy supplies to aid in the replacement. If you had done it WITHOUT him, it would have been more of a real test. Regardless, good vid! :)
