  • Euro NCAP Frontal Impact takes place at 64 Km/h, 40% of the width of the car striking a deformable barrier. In the Full Width test, 100% of the width of the car impacts a rigid barrier at 50 Km/h. In the side impact, a mobile deformable barrier impacts the driver's door at 50 km/h. In the pole test, the car tested is propelled sideways at 32 km/h into a rigid pole.

Our family car is one of these at a similar spec and about a month ago got in a slow speed collision. Tbh its a tank. The only damage is that the bonnets lifted, snapped passenger wheelarch/bumper, paint scratches on pass bumper and paint scratch on drivers door due to lifted bonnet. And that is repairable.

Beacuse the system would avoid some of the crashes.

    • @conorcranks5617

Punj yes, but when you look at the detailed results, the percentage for Volkswagen is lower in general, compared to the likes of Volvo, Peugeot or Opel for example, still five stars however

Another one of those cars with lazy engineering, deploying both side curtain airbags when only one is needed. Why do you need the passenger side curtain airbag in a driver side impact or driver side frontal offset impact? Why do you need any curtain airbag in a full frontal impact?
The driver side curtain airbag is a lifesaver in side and pole impacts and helps out in a driver side offset impact, in a full frontal it's not needed. None of these impacts required a passenger side curtain airbag deployment.

I'm glad engineers don't use logic like yours. Whether they were meant to go off or not or if that can be considered "lazy engineering" isn't even up for debate. I just don't understand how someone can complain about a car which just achieved an overall 5-star rating and a 96% adult occupant protection score for doing something some might consider 'overly safe'.
As if the car isn't a write-off after this anyways.

It is lazy engineering. In a full frontal crash your body is going to move STRAIGHT FORWARD and back, assuming you're wearing your seat belt. You don't need the curtain airbags. The less than 10% of people who don't buckle up are idiots.
You have to duck under curtain airbags to get out, they stay inflated for quite a while after deployment. Plus they create their own powder.
Not worth it when there's no side forces, such as in a full frontal crash, or when the side forces are going the other way such as the passenger side in a driver side offset.
I read about a case where a Q7 hit a deer and it deployed both the front airbags and curtain airbags, the car was fixable. You don't even need front airbags for a deer hit.
I wonder if they make the curtains go off in any frontal collision so they can sell more replacement airbags, which makes them money. They probably also do it to make a show for the cameras.
BTW the Volvo XC90 made 97% adult occupant protection and didn't deploy any side curtain airbags in the full frontal or even the offset.

Was your dad wearing his seat belt? Was the crash concentrated on one side (offset)?
If the crash was offset, maybe they should have gone off on the side that hit.

What if you hit a moving car in the side (t-bone)? Then the car rotates your car and your head gets smashed in the side window. Accidents are not as simple crashing into a stationary pole or wall.

Why did all the airbags go off on the frontal impact!? That's so stupid, the curtain air bags would have partially deafened any passengers and produce a lot of heat leading to unnecessary burns. The car should be able to detect and know which airbags need to be deployed, not just deploy all of for no reason whatsoever.

Zac Kirstein i had an accident where i hit in a frontal crash the side window, after that i needed to go to a hospital. With side curtains deployment this wouldnt happen. I would rather have some burns than having my fucking head smashed against the side window.

      @bighands69 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Your head will move around inside the car after an impact and you could hit your head on the window or pillar. Accidents are violent and happen in an instance so you would be glad that they do come down.

Because after the initial impact it might go on its side or roof, be hit by other cars, etc.

The car will be written off anyway, might as well deploy all the airbags and reduce the possibility of being injured.
