People who appreciate art obviously love Shepard Fairey's work, however people who have studied design know just how outrageously talented this guy is.
despite all the negative criticism here, how he makes art is his business. Even if it is entirely for commercial purposes, it doesn't matter. If you don't like his art go somewhere else, make your own art, do something better. As an artist, I wish i had half of the popularity and money.
I love shepard but homie destroying their entire local graffiti scene by going over entire walls already painted by the locals. I would immeditely graff over his pieces too if I was the locals
I agree with you Shepard has inspired me to stencil in the first place and now i am in school for Graphic Design. I wish one day my art work can be world wide known the people who hate or dislike are just ignorant people.
today i saw a old friend who got tired of me who is the world's biggest poser trying to fit in with the cool crowd. i saw him wearing an Obey shirt (which i also wear) with a eye and a tear. so i asked him, knowing he didn't know what it meant or where it came from, i said "do you even know what Obey is?" with a questioning face he said, "it's a skateboard company dumbass" and walked away.... i wish people acually knew what Obey really stands for :/
That “peace” piece was very controversial, and eventually pelted with paint balloons. It is painted at the address Jagtvej 69 where a youth house was previously demolished, to intense protests by the punks/alternative community who frequented the house. The youths took offense to the peace offering by Fairey, because they had no intention of peace with neither the government nor the church whose purchase of the house was the reason for the demolition.
Its sadly true that a lot of brain dead hipsters wear obey clothing and they don't know who Shepard is or what Obey actually is. Its the same with the band Nirvana. How hipster girls wear nirvana shirts because they 'love the band'. And the only song they know is Smells like teen spirit.
There is nothing complex about his art and there doesn't have to be. Art is art, you either do it and enjoy it, or you don't. If you are doing art to become wealthy, you're doing it for the wrong reason. If you are doing something people find appealing and you love what you're doing, you can become successful. I suggest doing something original.
for some odd reason it annoys me that shepard wears those small, tight shirts when he's working.. I would hate to constantly be pulling my shirt down & down & down but i dont know, maybe he likes it? respect
shepard fairey is my faverite artist but the thing i dont get is that he puts that star thats suposed to reprosent the devil in the hippy sign what reprosents peace and the devil wants war ??
Only if they don't know what Obey really is. Sadly Shepard did sell the logo and shit, but it still originated from him man. I haven't been a big street artist, really just tags so far. But shepards inspiring as hell man, if i had an Obey t-shirt i'd wear it. But if fuckers don't know about shepard then i'd agree with you. Most people are mindless drones
"OBEY Clothing is a popular clothing producing company founded in 2001 by street artist and illustrator Shepard Fairey as an extension to his work in activism" He still owns the rights and is the backer. He just isnt as involved anymore. He focuses on the art, and others focus on how to turn it into some fashion shit, which is just another avenue. What is worse? Emulating fashion? or emulating commercials? lol - its both done as art, to change the scenery and spark conversation. Personally if you were going to emulate something I hate.... commercial industry is even worse than fashion industry IMO lol In hacking we call this social engineering... mimic, integrate, exploit. You emulate them, by looking like fashion wear or advertising, you integrate by putting it on the wall, and on the bodies like everyone else... Then you exploit them by making them wear your messages instead of their own, and using them to your advantage :) Normal billboards or walking billboards, they are being "used" for a message better than NIKE and Coca-Cola.
with obey you can buy the shirts and shit at stores and completely miss it ....its honestly you understand the movement or you dont no one can explain it with out totally deconstructing it
I'll explain the movement....He takes art from artists from 50 yrs ago, copys it, changes it a tiny bit, and does pay homage to the original artists , we are talking direct copies....look it up...After that you'll think he's a fraud who cant actually draw or paint at all....Thats why u get whited out in ny every time...and if you call him on it? HE attacks you...the media(art) dont say anything, maybe cuz of the Satanic imagery?,,,the gov't loves that...for many reason
People who appreciate art obviously love Shepard Fairey's work, however people who have studied design know just how outrageously talented this guy is.

If all you care about is popularity and money you're in it for the wrong reasons.
Amen, mate
lmfao Shepard Fairey does more than just commercial stuff wtf
I love shepard but homie destroying their entire local graffiti scene by going over entire walls already painted by the locals. I would immeditely graff over his pieces too if I was the locals
That’s the idea.

I agree with you Shepard has inspired me to stencil in the first place and now i am in school for Graphic Design. I wish one day my art work can be world wide known the people who hate or dislike are just ignorant people.
