We gotta give credit to the great referees for being characters themselves. Honourable mention has to go to Aubrey Edwards' recent bump from Athena on Rampage. The crowd were in total shock. Red Shoes Unno from New Japan is one of my favourite refs. If the heel starts cheating he will refuse to count pinfalls, pretend to count pins only to stop at 2 and disqualify them, and even give them the middle finger! He is brilliant. 😁

Favorite ref...it's a toss up between earl Hebner and nick Patrick when he was a crooked ref eventually joining the nwo. Earl because he was there the longest and I grew up with him as the head ref. Nick Patrick because he played the part of an asshole perfectly to the point where people genuinely hated his guts.

However if you ever get the time, his Uncle Howdy booking was interesting. His pitches for the Sami Uso story were gold tho.
The story behind the other referees beating down the working ref is that the WWE referees we're tired of getting physically assaulted during matches, so they "went on strike". The ref that got jumped on was considered a SCAB referee, that's why he's got The Beats.

And legendary WCW Referee Mark Curtis aka Brian Hildebrand, who was the referee who beat up a few fans coming into the ring including using MMA skills to take a fan down in the ring...He was loved by every wrestlers, He died of Cancer in 1999...but he continued referring up until the end, just a few days before his death, he was only 5 foot 4 but had a huge heart and had no fear...the wrestlers from both WWE, WCW, ECW would put on a huge show to honor him every year....he was even inducted and honor as referee of the year and Most inspiring person of the year For Pro wrestling Illitrated and Wrestling Observer the year he died, he accepted well he was literally unrecognizable and gaunt from cancer. He really is extremely loved by every wrestler...still remembered today...as the Referee shooter.
