It matters because a trans woman (a man) can ruin the legacy of a famous person. It's a stain on the memory of Teddy to imagine him anywhere near a trans woman.
As a senior medical student in Ohio, I was doing a rotation in Anesthesiology at Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia in March 1982. Teddy was brought to Jefferson after his crash. The next day the surgeons performed a surgical procedure to stabilize his cervical spine, which was broken in the accident. I saw him lying on the operating table that morning. He had a magnificent body. We knew that his life would be forever changed. Very memorable. Too bad that an accident investigation was not done, since his fleet of luxury autos had been damaged one by one. Brake lines cut--that sort of thing. Was he a victim of foul play in 1982? We'll never know now.
Wow. Fleet of cars attacked? I think you and others should gather information and write a novel based on the facts and fill up t e gaps with ideas. That would inspire fans to push for an investigation. they never let blacks get too famous.

That night 4/2,my wife went into labor so i drove my car up to the entrance got my wife into the hospital we get up to the delivery room and a security guard came and told me i had to move my car,i go down take my car up 11 ST. to a garage parked my car walk back to the hospital to go back up to the delivery room,and as i got to the front door where there is valet parking when cars pulled up body guards jumping out and would not let me get into the hospital and when i told them that my wife was in delivery,they made sure that someone escorted me in they were all panicked,understandibly as was i,but in all that chaos they were very nice to me,they were just brought Teddy into the hospital and where my daughter was born 4/2/82,I WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT EVENING!!!

I remember all of this. I LOVED Teddy Pendergrass!! Wake Up Everybody, Close the Door. He was just SO DAMN GOOD! He was a huge loss! It's too bad that this is haunting his memory in anyone's eyes. I don't care about this kind of stuff. I just loved the man and his songs. I loved the Blue Notes. I loved driving around with my friends singing Get Up, Get Down, Get Funky, Get Loose, and Love TKO. All of it. RIP Mr. Pendergrass. Your music lives on.

Oh no sweetie we can't just forget about what happened that night. If we were to forget that particular night and all that happened, how would the world know who I am or what I'm capable of?How would all those big spenders (who now flock from the farthest stretches of the planet to satisfy their pulsating and throbbing curiosity regarding the validity of my legendary tree-popping oral skills) know anything about me and my dangerous and reckless yet somehow enchanting aura?
Try all you want, you'll never be able to write me out of music history; albeit an oral history. For I am tenika Watson and I used to rock a helluva mic (and still can). You never forget how to rock a mic, it's just like riding a bicycle (with the seat off of course).
We will never know what happened and need to take Teddy and her side of the story. It is sad what happened to Teddy and thank god neither one of them lost their lives and Teddy continued to sing and made hit songs after this tragedy.
Several of Teddy Pendergrass friends said he liked to play while driving. It was said he leaned over and found something he wasn't prepared for and that was the reason for the accident.

As a previous commenter mentioned listen to her words..... She says more than once " I heard " she never says she saw or she blacked out or nothing. Furthermore, you can tell she is choosing her words carefully but since she has probably told this story over and over to friends, family and some media outlets, it doesn't sound rehearsed. It sounds like something could've been wrong with the car, so I wonder if Teddy got a lawyer then tried to sue Rolls Royce. Maybe they gave him a huge settlement, but with the condition that he never say certain things.

He had several car accidents in the previous weeks. He was basically looking unconsciously for it.

Teddy wrote in his memoirs about suing the company and they gave him an 6 figure undisclosed settlement. He also wrote that his car had been acting up before the accident.

A car don't just suddenly go out of control by itself, especially a Rolls Royce. Teddy drove to the club, apparently with no issues with the car. Secondly, she says "and all of a sudden I heard this great big bang" now correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't she in the car with Teddy when the accident happened??? She says she suddenly "heard" this great big bang, as if she was anywhere but in the car and heard this bang...I think she (or he) needs to get the story straight.

I remember that night, we were all supposed to go to Lola Falana's house in Jersey after his performance on Broad street for the after party. Me and my buddy/business partner, Fred ( we were an up and coming production company trying to sign artists) chose to not go) next morning I heard about the accident. Needless to say, we, my partner and i were spooked, talked about it and dropped our plans for a production company which was to be head-quartered in NY, with main production offices offices in Philly at Broad and South in a building we were trying to purchase. --- I've always thought something was not right about the accident and felt he or us were targeted---TRUE STORY---wish i could tell you more but that book is closed

I had the pleasure of seeing Mr Pendergrass in the late 70's in concert, loved his lyrics & music, I wasn't into his lowcut bearded "handsome looks", he was a little too old for me lol, but he had that swag appeal, he was a sexy looking-acting Black man, he made the ladies scream,, including me lol and he passed out roses to ladies in the audience., That concert, he tore it up, singing one of his latest-greatest new hits at the time, It don't hurt now, It don't hurt no more.when he sang, he made you felt happy inside, not sad, because he had such a beautiful voice, whatever did hurt, it didn't hurt no more, he was a true to life singer. Pray God forgave him his trespasses and his soul is resting in Peace, in Heaven. Amen.

He had 4 double platinum albums at the time. No one in the R&B genre had achieved this. He had his own clothing company Teddy Bear jeans. A home previous owner Mike Douglas famous talk show host. He was a real threat to a lot of folks. He said all his cars were tampered with before that accident. Remember they also said he had ties with the Black Philadelphia Mafia. Back in those days it was a lot of organized underworld activity in the music business. I do believe someone wanted him out the way.

Yes, she is a transsexual but at the time of accident, she was in drag. It is a well known fact that Teddy frequented a certain gay bar before he became famous with the Blue Notes and he continued to go to that bar occasionally even after he became famous. It was one of his hangouts. And he had to know she was in drag....beautiful...but in drag....because it was a gay bar.

My Grandpa ran a bar where she frequented. People knew she was Trans but that she was also one of the most beautiful women. You wouldn’t guess it. But Teddy also has an apartment on 13th St. Anyone in Philly know where that is and what that means. Sexuality is a spectrum and Lincoln Drive is a treacherous road. Someone I know was killed on the drive just last week. It’s no joke.

I'm lost can anyone provide PROOF that they know 100% to be FACTUAL that Teddy P. was indeed in a sexual act when he got into the accident because I believe that this woman had no reason to lie. Has anyone ever thought that maybe someone else who at that club may have cut his brake lines out of jealousy? Whatever went on in that car was one thing, but they never address the condition of his brakes! Remember, that was the 80's,there wasn't all this electric stuff. And yes,cars do go out of control, just ask Toyota! But that's another story.
I always thought so. I always thought there was more behind it. If you check the song/video "Two Hearts" with Stephanie Mills and Teddy...he is in a chair sitting through the entire video...really weird. The chair even looks like a wheel chair and he' stiff. That song was released in 1980/1981. Teddy's accident was in 1982. That video was some sort of weird foreshadowing. And the Tenika woman/man...was put there as part of the set up.

Yes, this person is transsexual. For what it's worth I remember when this accident happened and how it was reported in the news. I was a child and remember being at my aunt's house where I saw a newspaper report on the car crash.
