Wouldn't there be some risk of the cardboard getting too hot and lighting on fire? I thought for sure you were gonna have some kind of heat deterrent.

I wondered about that too, but experimented and came up with these conclusions: 1- so long as the bulb is not very high wattage, 2-NOT too close to the cardboard, and 3- not left on for long, 4- unattended, there is little danger. Further, If we use cool LED bulbs then the safety factor is increased.
I think there is more fire hazard from using cheap electrical fixtures with questionable pedigrees than the material cardboard presents. Always look for the UL listing on every electrical socket and switch. They test for safety under extreme circumstances.
In other words, do NOT use cheap sockets and switches with hasty wiring in a poorly-designed sloppily-made lamp with a two hundred watt high-intensity bulb left on while you are on vacation.
So far I have not heard of anyone starting a fire with these, although does not mean it won't happen. There are also fire-proofing and flame resistance coatings we can apply. Some are brush on. Others are available in spray cans.
Some common sense, careful craftsmanship, plus following those design and operation rules should keep you OK.

Was bummed out it might have been a cool light but directions were printed in the worst font possible for this application. Unfortunately it was totally illegible. Had to turn it off.
