Well, then, If I can't play the original version (because I couldn't even beat World 1), then I Should have played the hack! And I actually did! Last video (link above) showed a somewhat obscure game, developed by Hudson in a somewhat obscure gaming console, or two consoles, the NEC PC-8801 and the X1 Series from Sharp.
But now, thanks to this: www.romhacking.net/hacks/527/ that game was "ported" to the NES! frantik and Levi "Karatorian" Aho, I must say, Thanks for making this hack!
Anyway, about my run, I don't really know what to say about it, because most of it is almost like a speed run. Let me clarify that this is NOT a speed run, just in case...
Of course there are mistakes, and lives lost, mainly on World 6, oh well...

Wow, Hudson soft really outdid themselves, those level designs are so amazing
Even better than the original SMB, I would say.
but back then it was scene to scene. no side scrolling action.
But hudson soft did also made weird levels in that game.

Good upload. People miss the reason for posting this. It’s to show off the rom hack as how a normal player would play it. Everyone is so obsessed with being perfect and not making mistakes.

Looks like a fun game. I always hated hacks that try to re-draw the sprites. This hack seems to have all the sprites as Nintendo has them but the tiles are arranged in a different way. The way a hack should be. Definitely gives re-play value to the original version.

Out of all of the Super Mario Bros. games, this one I never played before, I believe it was a combination of Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 2: The Lost Levels. I look forward on playing this game on my laptop and on my phone.
I'm halfway through this game, and really enjoying it. I like it a LOT better than SMB2J (aka, Lost Levels). I'm sad that this hack couldn't put the Wing powerup in though. I wanted to swim in the sky. :(

I played this game with some differences - the sky was dark blue and Mario was in another color... But the configuration of levels was the same.
You were playing the version of the hack where they gave Mario and the graphics the pallete to look like SMBS did on the computer originally.
That glitch thru the wall at 7:00 has me cracking up. Good stuff brother

This is what I don’t understand, why is the timer counting faster than the original smb? In other words, why is the SMB 1 game timer moves slower than the SMB Special?

I'd love to see a Super Mario Special by Hudson port to the NES with the extra power ups and enemies. The is another one which has copied the colour scheme from the original game but I believe it's the same as this one.

I like how the actual developers spent time to make completely new levels, based on a classic and beloved game, on what's the equivalent of a potato. Now, you got ROM hackers "porting" all of your levels that you spent time on and actually making it better than your game.

Because in the original Super Mario Bros. Special, the timer went down to zero THAT fast.

Bullet Bills were in the original game, and they were kind of random, and even the blasters shoot them off if they are one screen ahead of Mario.
Does the hack have the new powerups from the original super mario bros special? Like the hudson bee and the wings that make you swim through the air?
Unfortunately, they do not appear in this hack. It would have been awesome if they did, though. But alas...

I can't beat the world 4-4 it is damn damn hard to figure the code
I know how to beat 4-4.When you start,you probably noticed 2 routes during each run.Here's the routes;Up,Up,Down,Up.Then finish the rest of the level.

People can speak out loud for the creativity to make some “ danger crazy and hard to pass” stage, but eventually they should ask themselves: why is this “ super Mario maker” ever existed?
It is because people who played all the Mario games should create some stage that may better than the original!

I've never heard of this game back when I was a lot younger I played the Lost Levels and beat them only once and I beat Super Mario 1 2 and 3 and Mario 64 and my favorite Super Mario RPG legend of the Seven Stars but now that I'm in my forties I don't think I could play this game looks too nerve-wracking

hey vincent i know this video is old and youll most likely never see this comment... but thanks with out this video i wouldnt have ever figured out the path for 7-4 thanks alot ....after seeing your video i was able to finish the game in less than ten minutes (i died a lot )

If you wanna play Super Mario Bros. Special do it via Super Mario Crosover cause this hack is not 100% accurate to the original game.
I don't really get the fascination for this game. Much of the level design rips off SMB1's with some alterations (likely done due to the hardware limitations of the NEC PC-8801 and Sharp X1 compared to the Famicom.), and lacks the same level of polish and quality that Miyamoto and Tezuka's levels were built with.
Patch93 1.) The fascination for this game stems from the fact that a third party was permitted by Nintendo to not only use their most famous license, but also to produce an indirect sequel to their most famous game. Such a thing today would be unimaginable. So it’s an interesting snapshot of a time when attitudes towards franchises were a lot more flexible than they are now. That this game was created for a now obscure computer is merely the icing on the cake.
2.) It doesn’t “rip off” SMB 1 any more than SMB 2 Japan “rips off” the same game. Both these games essentially use the same assets as the original. (A couple of novel power-ups in this SMBS notwithstanding.) That and the limitations imposed by the original computers this game was developed for precluded any possibility of radical innovation. Understand that during this relatively early period in gaming, the notion of “sequels” was still a startlingly new and unexpected one for game developers, who were still in the process of codifying, so to speak, many aspects of the hobby that we now have now come to expect. Sometimes they created sequels that looked and functioned in radically divergent ways that unsettled fans of the original iterations (e.g. The Adventure of Link, Simon’s Quest, Final Fantasy II, etc). Other times, they would play it safe and closely hew to the originals in order not to alienate fans (e.g. Super Mario Bros. 2 Japan, Super Mario Bros. Special, Dragon Quest II, etc). It would take a couple of more years for some developers to begin finding that happy medium between innovation and tradition.
3.) You give Hudson Soft too little credit. At the time they were one of the powerhouse Japanese developers. Their SMBS is a quirky, fascinating extension of the original SMB.

Not sure if I did call this a hack, its doing the sensible thing and make something that is completly unplayble something you can actually play someone should send Nintendo a copy.
This is not a hack, man...it is actually Hudson borrowed the original Mario game from Nintendo in order to make the Mario game better and challengeable than the original...think about the original purpose of “ super Mario maker” , Hudson game already took this purpose for real.

Try to do the “ unlimited live trick” in certain stage like from the original Mario game. That will give you more live to play the rest.

This isn't a complete port, it's just SMB manipulated so that the maps will be a replica of SMBS'. As such, Kat couldn't really add the SMBS power ups or enemies.
