    Dunbar is my favorite place. My dad grew up there, my mom in Pardee. My grandparents lived in the green house next to Church. I appreciate the visit (I like your videos) but y’all missed so much history in your pass through. There are coke ovens you missed, the Coal Miners Daughter connection to Pardee, other cool spots. The boonies though 😂

    The last 2 story house on the left, (white with red roof) was where I grew up. It used to be green with white trim. I planted a pine tree in the corner near the road when I was in the 3rd grade.

    It must be difficult to live there in Dunbar. It is far from everything.

    Long time subscriber. Would love to see a map at the start of the video to show the location, ideally a moving map in a corner as you drive.

    WOW! You sweet people are out in the boonies. At least you are on a secondary road. This is absolutely beautiful country folks. Love the beautiful trees and the flowers. Somethings tells me that you two are not going to pass many cars on the road going in the opposite direction. I have seen only three signs; speed limit, right curve, and railroad. What route are you on in VA? There doesn't appear to be any houses until you reach Dunbar. I would not want to be caught on this road at night or in the winter. I doubt if there is cell phone service. I hope your gas tank is full. I lived in VA for 2 years and didn't realize there was a Dunbar, VA. I was born and raised in Dunbar, WV which is very different from where you are heading. Did you come across Dunbar in your research? This was such a great video. Thanks for taking me along on this adventure.

    This i an amazingly nice road. Some rocks cut further back to build it.

    Based on the camera view, it looked like Shane was driving right down the middle of that two-lane road! 😊At least before you got to Dunbar anyway. You were talking about women staying at home and doing the cooking and cleaning, and the men having more social opportunities. In the case of my grandparents, my grandmother was a school teacher, and did the cleaning, but not the cooking. She also was very active in the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), the Eastern Star, the church, the historical society, and socializing with her brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. Grandpop stayed at home and tended the farm, and also did the cooking. Plus he was a Mason. Anyway, nice ride, and I enjoyed seeing Dunbar, and of course the church.

    I have family that still lives there and we go a few times a year to visit my grandmother. My mom grew up in Dunbar and my dad in Exeter. Y'all really did miss some history and the old Coal Miners bath house is still standing in Dunbar as well but you can't drive to it. You've not truly explored Dunbar until you've gotten to take a good walk through.

    I always have thought it was weird companies left these machines and trucks sitting. Great video guys!

    • @chubbawubba4287
      @chubbawubba4287 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Usually they are auctioned off or similar. I am willing to bet they are not forgotten. Maybe they could be but that is minimal of 500K even used in that shape sitting there. The 1 machine new is over 200K these days. They seemed in decent shape probably not been sitting there long. Regardless sad seeing another mine shut down and all the men and women who worked there unemployed with most likely not much other skilled training for a new career . Heavy Equipment operators and welders etc can go anywhere but miners are ultimately the ones who get the "shaft" pun not intended. America needs to realize coal is not their enemy and it is the misrepresentation of dirty politics at play by shutting down our natural resources, just to make a few feel good, who are misinformed or even worse.

    Trying to understand a town like Dunbar. Looks so beautiful. I didn’t see a diner,coffeehouse,hotel/motel,general store or anything really. How do people get their needs met there? Is it still a coal mining town or what do people do for work there? Looks like you have to drive quite a distance if you need anything at all.

      Dunbar is unincorporated. Everyone has an Appalachia, VA address. There is nothing there other than homes and a church. Most people go to Appalachia, Big Stone Gap or Norton for groceries and what not. It's only about 15 minutes or so from town in either direction. Dunbar was one of the most peaceful places to be during childhood. The roaming and adventures were endless before hunting clubs bought up all the land. They've kinda ruined the magical aspect of Dunbar.

And the old black high school in Welch was Dunbar High School. Just curious. And I need a shirt that says Yep! MY holler and MY chickens!❤

      The coal barons chose the names of their sites. Typically named after themselves or some other place they have connection to (their hometown). From what I have read before, “Dunbar” was named after a location in Pennsylvania. I believe that was in one of the books on Wise County coal camps they used to see at Mutual Pharmacy in Big Stone Gap.

    • @LisaMilanese
      @LisaMilanese ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I do remember that Pardee came from the President of the Blackwood Coke & Coal Co., Calvin Pardee.

    • @bradlane3662
      @bradlane3662 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LisaMilanese I knew about the coal barons usually choosing the names. And I sure appreciate the info about Dunbar. Makes all the sense in the world. Many communities here in the coal fields carry names of towns, companies, family names, etc in PA.

    You have the comments turned off on the inbred video. You need to look deeper with Mark and The Soft White Underbelly. He doesn’t exploit the Whitaker’s. He has helped financially in repairs to the house’s, bought them a truck. There are other things too.
    He don’t just go to W VA for views from that family. He has interviewed tons of other Appalachian people. From Eastern Kentucky ( where my family is from. Pike Co.) and SW Va. also where my family is. Buchanan Co. He speaks very highly of the sheer beauty of that region.
    And other people all around the country. Skid row. In Los Angeles, Florida. All over
    His channel is great. You need to look below the surface though. He financially helps a lot of the people he interviews

    You're not trespassing on the first area of that turnoff 😊 that's Cane Patch. That's where my great grandparents lived and my Papaw grew up. There's a cemetery on the side of the mountain across the gravel road y'all were on from the abandoned equipment.

    Great video Shane and Melody! I remember many a country home back in the day that had a root cellar. And you were really lucky if you had a spring house to store your food! Nice, clean, cool ground water that you could store your dairy products in! Really brought back some memories for me!

    Oh, please send some of that rain up to Northwestern Ohio, Shane and Melody! We have gone 13 days (and more to come, they tell us) without a drop. The farmers are getting worried, to say the least!
    Gotta love that CC feature on TH-cam. I accidentally left it on, and it translated "coal bins"
    as "Colby" one time (for those who prefer to burn cheese?) and "cold beans." (If you prefer scented coal?) another time. I may leave CC on more often... if only for the entertainment value.
    But seriously, thanks for another wonderful video!

    Your wiper blades gave me Hear-Ack. As for women cooking & cleaning! Most of them are too sorry to do that in today's world. My older brother use to say that when a woman turns 50 she becomes a Dry Bag. I use to think that was a horrible thing to say, lol. But after I got older I have to wonder. Does anyone know what a dry bag is? lol. I truly wonder if anyone knows. No disrespect intended to anyone, lol.
