Florence Quivar is a treasure! Her voice is one of the most soul stirring sounds I've ever heard!! Tenor, Lawrence Brownlee did an interview with her last year, and it was pure joy listening to her share wonderful stories about her career and life. She is 77 now and even sang a little bit during the interview.

Like Janet Baker a human cor Anglais parallel: richly superb and haunting!

The bit starting at 4:14 is some of my favorite singing EVER.

Sometimes she sounds like a lyric soprano. A beautiful long voice.

What is odd to me is that you think she should only be compared to other black singers.

You are definitely correct. But one must add that the greatest mezzos of the second half of the 20th C were black. one could add Horne and maybe Cossotto but Bumbry and Verrett were in a class of their own) Any mezzo would therefore be automatically be compared to them.
