  • The Phnom Kulen National Park is known for its cashew trees and evergreen lychee species, which provide livelihood to the people living in the area. However, the fruits of these trees can only be harvested during summer months. Meanwhile, the climbing fern, or vine, grows abundantly all year-round, and has been found to be a good material for making handicrafts.
Because of this, the Biodiversity-based Products (BBP) as an Economic Source for the Improvement of Livelihoods and Biodiversity Protection project, promoted the sustainable use of the vine as a sustainable source of income by establishing a biodiversity-based value chain and turning the fiber plant into handicraft items.
Funded by the German government through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für International Zusammenarbeit GmbH and implemented by the GFA Consulting Group and the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, the BBP project was piloted in three different ASEAN Member States. The Phnom Kulen National Park in Cambodia was one of the pilot sites.
