- Ever since Wave 4 of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass released, Yoshi Teddybuggy has dominated the game. However, as of very recently. A very promising contender, Yoshi Scooty, has become much more common online. Is this the new best combo? Or is Teddy Bear still on top?

Also forgot to mention 3 other things, the ATV drift style of Teddy, which helps take slightly tighter turns and sticking to the ground a little better, 2nd is the hitbox, which Scooty has a clear advantage in and it does matter in many situations, and lastly, wall dodges, wall dodges are by far and away easier on Scooty because of the fact it's a bike. You can decide fur yourself what you think is more important
Can somebody actually make a side by side comparison of the bounciness and drifting styles between Karts, ATVs, and Outside-drift bikes?
I can not feel the difference between the 3 except maybe (just maybe) the outside-drifting bikes
I do not believe there is any difference in the turning ability of either due to the fact it's an ATV or Bike.
However, Scooty is significantly slower and has significantly more handling, so Scooty is definitely easier to turn with
@@dogyX3When we're talking about vehicles with the same stats, there probably is a difference. Let's take my understanding of the current meta vs. the old meta.
In the current meta, people choose Teddybuggy > Cat Cruiser because people prefer smaller Hitbox over Invincibility. Same reasoning as Mr. Scooty > Biddy Buggy.
For the old Waluigi meta, if we were to take the same logic, I would of thought Standard Bike > Wild Wiggler because they have the same stats but the bike has a smaller hitbox, but no. The majority preferred Wild Wiggler because of the drift style and bounciness (the ability to stick to the floor better) which is something that is hard for me to feel or visualize, hence why I commented.

If ATVs are truly better, why *didn’t* Wild Wiggler pop off in 8U? Either people didn’t catch on back then, ATVs were somehow worse at firehopping, or Nintendo did something with ATV physics in 8DX.
Because of this, I’m calling the ATV bias placebo/preference until I see objective evidence that ATVs are ALWAYS better than Karts and Bikes, no matter how they tweak their control inputs to take the same lines.

For me the handling of Scooty is the most important thing about it in online play.
Online races can get very spammy at times and from my experience it is easier to avoid items with Scooty than it is with Teddy!
The Mini Turbo is the cherry on top, but at the end of the day it's all coming down to preference.

Great video as always JPG. One advantage that Mr. Scooty has over Teddy Buggy is the ability to wall dodge red shells with a mushroom, but at the same time the Teddy Buggy has more speed which makes comebacks a lot easier. I like both combos in the end.
You can also use Biddybuggy or the Cat Cruiser as well, but the trade off is bigger hitboxes.
Cat Cruiser has 2 entire extra levels of invincibility to make up for the larger hitbox.
Which barely matters at all. But the same goes for the slightly largely hitbox. They're both pretty balanced with only _incredibly_ small differences. People using Teddybuggy more often is mostly just a matter of the meta-mentality (doing whatever is most popular, blending in with the surroundings).
The same can't be said for Scooty and Biddybuggy though. I wish Biddybuggy had more invincibility, but for whatever reason it doesn't. So instead of being practically equal, Scooty is ever so slightly better online. You can take slightly better lines with Biddybuggy when picking up coins or mushrooms on the ground, but it hardly matters compared to getting hit less often.
Surprised you didn’t mention the differences in the hit boxes. Scooty is easy to avoid other items with and can more easily crack red shells on walls.

Going from Teddy to Scooty you lose -0.50 speed
While Yoshi Teddy to Baby Mario Teddy you lose -1.00 speed
My main has always been semi-heavyweight on Biddybuggy-roller cloud glider. Perfect balance of speed and mini turbo. Don't have to crank sparks every frame, and easy to drift.
Watching this video may help me beat the remaining time trials I have been struggling with. As always, thanks for this video!

I’ve been working on 200cc Grand Prix a lot lately trying to 3 star everything. I find that, at 200cc, since you’re braking a lot, speed isn’t nearly as important as it is on 150cc. I’ve been using Lemmy/Scooty and like the additional handling, along with the mini-turbo. Hitting tricks whenever possible is helpful as well, since trick speed is based on mini-turbo.
It's true, the small characters definitely have a newfound advantage on 200cc.
Lemmy Scooty is extra good, because those 2 extra acceleration that Lemmy has over Yoshi allows him to reach the acceleration breakpoint. The *2* levels from 18 to 20 matters *as much* as the *3* levels from 15 to 18. So those 2 levels of acceleration is effectively 3 levels, and because you're braking, the acceleration is nice to help you reach max speed faster again after breaking.
But though Lemmy is good, in terms of pure numbers, I would still say the Light Mii/Dry Bones/Baby Mario & Luigi class is slightly better. 1 extra traction is worth losing 1 handling (because we're already past level 15 handling, and handling beyond 15 has *very* diminished returns).
That alone would make them equally balanced with Lemmy and Baby Rosalina. But on top of that, they have 1 extra speed. Speed might matter less, but it still matters whenever you're not braking.
Lemmy is still good on 200cc! The light mii class is just slightly better, which I think was worth pointing out considering the spirit of this video. Though obviously, the true decider between which is better... is the style points! Lemmy for some, Dry Bones for others... whichever has the most drip to the perceiver is obviously the superior choice 😎

This is like the beginning of the waluigi era, there were 4 wiggler, 4 biddys and 4 scooty, as time went by people realized that wiggler was the best kart, and that's when wiggler started to dominate, the same thing will happen with teddy
i think the trend would make it clear that given enough time, waluigi scooty would have EVENTUALLY been the meta. given another year or two if no balance patch
So I believe scooty is better for 1 Stat. The "item" Stat. How well the combo handles item play. Once your hit Scooty gets back in the race faster. Scooty will always adjust for bananas on optimal lines better. Scooty will even fix bad lines after simple mistakes from bumps or dodging.
To put it simply. I think scooty I'd better because it can be more consistent.

getting to 2.0 weight for scooty with parafoil or tanooki mario is probably better than using yoshi with paper glider, as weight is tiered in this game, or for at least one value, which is the one related to mini turbos
Has anyone documented any evidence of how much that weight breakpoint actually matters? I've been trying to find it since a few months ago, but I've had no luck.
Having 2 less traction or 1 less of both traction and water speed has a very straightforward mathematical reductions to speed on the given terrain (1 less traction is about ⅓ of a speed stat less on ice and sand, and 2 less traction is ⅔).
Though small, these are actually measurable differences. If the difference between 4 and 5 weight in gameplay is so small that it cannot be measured properly, then I don't think it's worth going for. I would assume you could TAS an experiment to measure the _exact_ importance of weight, but it's not like I know how to TAS.
Do you happen to know someone who has done it, properly tested the importance of weight in MK8DX? It's understandable if you don't know either, but I'm asking around just in case 😅

sometimes i still get bumped around on a heavy combo but it feels significantly less impactful than if i was on, say, yoshi biddy roller flower

The problem with weight is how many different factors impact exactly how far you are bumped. A bump from an optimal bumping-angle can push a mediumweight further than a lightweight will be pushed from a less optimal bumping-angle. On average, you might be able to feel the average bump being lesser when heavier - but this feeling can't exactly be translated into concise numbers in a spreadsheet lol. Thanks for answering anyways! My search for the meaning of l̶i̶f̶e̶ the Mario Kart weight stat continues.

You using Wario Scooty in 2021 inspired me to main it as well - and is why I prefer Mr Scooty today! I always liked having a bit more mini turbo, and the drift style of the bike is more comfortable for me personally than the ATV drift style of Teddy Buggy.
I always drive inward bikes since MK Wii because I prefer. So on MK8 I’m playing Yoshi/Yoshimoto and I see that I’m competitive with the others online. So what combo is the best for inward bikes ?

Teddy and Scooty are on a par. It all depends on which combo you're more skilled with. I was of the same opinion with Wiggler and Scooty back then.

Definitely worth mentioning (Shortcat brought this to my attention) that using the Inkling Boy weight class actually provides a massive advantage over the Yoshi class because of the weird way weight works in this game. Since you said you think weight is slightly more important than acceleration, I think this is worth giving a try! I’ve found that I can bump Teddy players more confidently since I’ve tried it.
This is because every full bar of Weight (1.0, 2.0, 3.0 and so on) increases your knockback force during *boosts* of any kind. This also includes *Mini Turbo* boosts. Since the meta revolves around spamming Mini Turbos, a LOT of bumps are gonna be using that category of knockback over the normal one.
0.75 to 1.75 = 30
2.0 to 2.75 = 45
3.0 to 3.75 = 60
4.0 to 4.75 = 70
5.0 to 5.75 = 80
Yoshi Teddy sits at 2.25 (Paper Glider) or 2.50 (Peach Parasol) Weight. Yoshi Scooty sits at *1.75* Weight, 0.25 off from 2.0. This means Water Speed and/or Traction sacrifice is required to hit that 2.0, whether it be swapping to Peach Parasol or using Tanooki Mario/Male Villager/Inkling Boy.
The "Weight is useless" claims likely came from people getting *slammed* harder than expected by opponents running lighter builds, and assume it's due to lag or Weight doing practically nothing. These people likely aren't aware of the separate boosting knockback.
I’ll be blunt, Teddy (or Yoshi Bike if you main inside drift like I do) clears Scooty in almost every aspect. The added speed (especially in the air) makes it worth it with only a smidge loss in mini turbo (and Yoshi Teddy is already stupidly busted in the MT department). Heck, even Kusaan switched back to Teddy (and I’m pretty sure Scooty will fall off in the next few months).
Then again, there will be some people that will stay loyal to Scooty (or Biddy). All depends on preference, but I like a touch of speed myself.

Yoshi biddybuggy is still the best Yoshi combo in my personal opinion. Even though I can drive fine with it, I go for a very stylish combo which drives the best. They should also make all the other stylish characters the best characters in the game.

Add pipe frame, which has same stats as Tripper, although with a larger hit box.
The Teddy Buggy is preferred because it has more anti-gravity speed.

Teddy is considered only slightly better than city tripper, but just saying that is enough to create the herd mentality because people want to take advantage of whatever miniscule stat they can get, so you can still compete with the city tripper because it's viable.

Hey just a quick opinion here: I know Mr Scooty is viable but personally I think Daisy with Scooty Roller and Paper glider is a really close top 5 because it feels really smooth to handle without sacrificing a lot of speed for Mini-Turbo not to mention it has decent acceleration as well as decent weight stats but hey I would love to hear opinions on this if ya'll wanna try and prove me wrong (I agree that Yoshi Teddy is good but i've been getting tired of using Yoshi so yeaaa)
I mean, you can use either character. Same stats. It's just whatever character you prefer.
Daisy and yoshi have the same stats, though if you want to use scooty, consider using inkling boy. Yoshi/daisy scooty has a really low weight compared to teddy (because 4 weight is so much worse than 5 weight) so you can make up for this by using inkling boy, male villager, or tanooki mario.
Can dry bowser compete?
I think in a sort of post-meta scenario where everybody is better at the game than they are now, Scooty might just be better long term. A Scooty in the right hands is extremely powerful, as most of its secondary traits are either better (accel, handling, hitbox) or don't matter much online (weight, i-frames). History has shown that miniturbo has proven to be more and more important as the game's meta develops in both time trials and online, and that trend could be pushed one final notch to make Teddy the minority.
Right now that's just a theory, but time will tell.

I know scooty and biddy have the same stats but i also think teddy is better and i used to main it. With that being said i just find biddy to be more fun and better to drive for me so although i prefer teddy i think birdo biddybuggy is the best combo in the game.

Hitbox? Yes you can even avoid red shells on scooty if you're close enough to a wall, but it is harder to get item boxes sometimes due to how small the hitbox is
But you're ignoring the most important stat in the game... Aesthetics. Which is why Pipe Frame and Biddy are the true meta.

it has to do with drifting style. Most people prefer ATV drifting styles rather than Kart drifting styles.

@@IGoSantaMK8 you're correct on both. The drifting of cat cruiser is worse for taking the best lines and it gets hit easier. Cat cruiser isn't worth it.

Which tires to use??
If you want the best results, roller or azure roller tires are your best bet. There's no difference stat wise and just comes down to preference.

The roller tires are the red ones, the ones used in the thumbnail. The standard aka normal tires are more yellow. The azure roller tires are indeed the blue version.
Inkling Boy class on Scooty is better than Yoshi Scooty because of hitting the 2.0 weight breakpoint and only losing a bit of traction for it
but tbh the main reason I think teddy is better than Scooty is that Scooty is kinda locked in to front running. it's a pretty bad combo for bagging

I dont really care about the meta. You can win with any combo. Ive won quite a few with funky kong on the yoshi bike. And also daisy, peach, and luigi also work with the teddu buggy

@@DaNormie Yeah this is the main reason. Also, JPG has used pipe frame and city tripper in a few of his competitive videos/streams, so it's not like it isn't viable, it just isn't the best.
Anyone saying accel is not important is trolling and only thinks about its uses against items, when it is also use for maintaining/getting back up to speed when you get bumped. It is not as important as speed or mini-turbo obviously, but due to weight being more geared toward who has a higher top speed and who bumps who, the stat itself I would say is very slightly worse than the accel that will end up getting you back up to speed after said bump. It's also better for exiting shroomless cuts that require hopping on offroad as you will get back to your top speed faster.
I use Diddy City Tripper because it has .5 higher accel stat over the meta, due to Diddy's class having more accel. I don't mind the minor bump in speed since I am not trading one for the other I am gaining .5 and losing .25, and I used to use Yoshi Scooty, so the minor bump in speed is fine for me.
Overall you can get away with using Pipe Frame and Streetle, and even using Mario/Luigi/Diddy. Hell I have seen Shy Guy in Diamond, but overall the meta will stay meta.
Also if you purely play worldwides, even at max VR you can use any character and still top 3 90% of the time as long as you stay on rollers and one of the top four kart classes (Teddy, Scooty, Pipe Frame, Streetle)

There is no such thing as the best combo or build if you're already good at the game or don't care about the meta. Use whatever you want and you will still do great
Edit: If you still somewhat care about builds, as long as your speed stat isn't above 4 bars then you should be fine
