It's already hard to educate people that handmade items are pricey for a reason, and these people underpricing crochet products makes it much worse😔 i feel you, best of luck to u (and a big fan of the spider lilly it's so pretty) aaaa) love lots♥️♥️♥️
The white flower you ask about looks closest to a white variety of Stargazer lily. The most colorful Stargazer lily is the pink and magenta one that has orange anthers on the stamens. Stargazer lilies have 2 to 3 flowers per stalk, and you have 2 blooms plus one flower bud which is a good match. Lily leaves are a little different than how you are doing them. But overall, this looks like a Stargazer.
You could turn this into an amaryllis by placing the flower at the top of a thick flower stalk. The flower stalk has no leaves on it. Amaryllis has one to 12 flowers, depending on the species and comes in a lot of colors. All the flowers form a whorl at the top of the stalk. Most of the ones people can buy to force have one to 3 flowers, which don't all open at the same time. So you could do a combo of open, part open and buds. The flower has a strong funnel shape at its base. Amaryllis have long strap like leaves, but these do not usually emerge much from the bulb until after the plant has flowered.
Another possible flower to make is a trillium. There are 40+ species of Trillium, the majority of which are in North America with 5 or 6 sp. in Asia ( Himalayas, China, Korea. Japan, the Kamchatka peninsula). The basic structure of a Trillium is 3 white stigmas fused at the base to one style, surrounded by 6 stamens with yellow anthers, surrounded by 3 petals, then by 3 green sepals = the flower (only one flower per stem). At a distance below the base of the flower is a whorl of 3 bright medium green leaves. The distance between the base of the flower and the whorl of leaves depends on the species, whether it is pedicillate or sessile. The largest and showiest trillium is Trillium grandiflorum. It has white petals that can take on a hint of pink as the flower ages. There is also a form 'roseum' with rose pink petals.
The US Forest Service website has pages with very good pictures of Trillums. See
www.fs.usda.gov/wildflowers/beauty/trilliums
Another cool trillium is the painted trillium, Trillium undulatum.
Trillium grandiflorum is the official provincial flower of Ontario.
In one of my last market vlogs (the one with the lobster) I showed off another crochet vendor and was super complimenting her stuff, I even bought a keychain, but a lot of people in the comments speculated she was reselling Chinese items and now looking at some of the things you showed off I think they are right. She only had flowers, keychains and hair clips and she had those same bunny flowers and everything had the little eyebrows.
If I see her booth again I will definitely ask her to confirm she made everything, but what a bummer ☹️
Just watched it (loved the vlog, so cute omg) and def think she was reselling, hairclips for $5 was insanely cheap too omg
It's happening in California too. I noticed that this one shop was showing up at EVERY event I went to last year and the amount of product they had on hand was logically impossible for 3 people let alone one person to maintain. And when I say every event. I was doing 2 - 4 events a month over a 6 month "working" season. I still saw them at events I was just attending during my "off" season and had even MORE stock than before. There was only 2 people working the booth and it's the same 2 people at every show. The math only works if they are time travelers or have a sweat shop. 🤷♀
I wish I was a time traveller 🥲 I think even with me and 2 friends and my mom, I could probably do MAXIMUM 2 events a month. But for that many months straight??? I would for sure need a break in the middle omg
I have an event every Saturday from may-October, i am always crocheting so it is possible to have a lot of product.
It’s possible to have a lot of stocks. I have been selling crochet since 2018 and not everything is sold, old inventories have been added after years and I keep bringing those to every event with a hope that I can sell it or at least make my booth looking great and attractive.
omg finally, I was wondering why I haven't seen a notification from your channel this week, omg I was literally scrolling through Temu and saw a lot of crochet flowers listed for so cheap, and it is honestly so disheartening, though you can definitely tell the difference tho. Your work is definitely MUCH higher quality, it has that unique feel to it with each individual petal and everything. you are out of their league they aren't a competition!!
Thank you 😭😭 I've been feeling pretty unmotivated by it but tbh I shouldn't really mind until the event actually happens, maybe it won't actually affect me 😵💫😵💫😵💫😵💫 altho it has def affected my online sales ahhhh I'm doing my best to ignore it and stay focused on making new things 👹👹 but sometimes I'm tired and it gets hard asdffklll:
@@madewithapril , you got this!!! You're literally my biggest inspiration in the crochet community. I can't wait to see all the new designs you come up with!!✨🩷🌺 You should try Lilo and stitch flowers (I think they r hibiscus)
P.S.make sure you do hand stretches and soak your hand in cold water and stay hydrated 🍶🩷✨
This is the reason that when I see people on instagram with giant trunks full of flowers all the time I’m suspicious unless I see them post stories or videos of them actually making them or crocheting in some way. And that sucks because if they are legit I feel bad for doubting them but still. People out here being super shady. Gorgeous new designs btw!
Yeah it's a tough situation to deal with, I was really struggling with the idea of hiring my friends to help because I know people who aren't aware I have help might think I'm suspicious. 😕
Beautiful girl Please don't give all your secrets away They are the special things that make you unique and makes it difficult for others to recreate So much talent for such a young lady
The algorithm knows me so well!!! I've been working on a red spider lily painting 😂❤ it's a sign
no bc this happened to me at my last market and when i looked at their social media, it’s just them posting photos of the flowers, no clips of them actually crocheting anything. so mine were priced much higher than theirs, which caused me to lose sales. it’s so annoying, i had to take the flowers off my inventory bc i literally can’t compete anymore.
omg thanks for calling these people out. It's soooo annoying they keep popping up at handmade craft fairs (like SJMade, you'd think they'd notice)
Omg what sjmade is such a big deal!! I thought for sure they would vet their vendors 😵💫
The white flower reminds me of an Amaryllis. It's just the flower placement looks a bit off to be an Amaryllis 😊
omg it does look like this, I might just move the flowers around a bit so it looks more like this *U*
Hello, I am from Hong Kong. That's why i scrared to start my crochet business...
If you are interested in making those potted plants I highly recommend Amazon for the pots and the grass. I’m in the US though so idk if they are available to buy in Canada. My daughter makes crochet stuff and I sell it at my art booth so I also have to hunt down the yarn and products for the project she wants to make 😅 only thing she has been able to teach me how to make is a leggy frog 😭 the other option is crochet the pot but then you have to consider that in the price for time and if stuff gets too expensive people tend to be less inclined to buy. Pricing in this economy has honestly been difficult. Idk if that’s also an issue in Canada but here in the US it’s been a struggle.
Canadian Amazon sucks compared to US Amazon 😭 we have a way smaller selection it sucks so much gah, I definitely will just avoid making anything I can find that is similar to these products in the future 😭
I went to the mall the other day and there was a store full of crochet items. I was sure they bought those items to sell. I asked the guy does he crochet and he said him and his family made everything. I’m suspicious 🧐
They always say it's their family 😭 maybe it is but it's kind of hard to believe that your whole family spends all their time crocheting? No wayyyyy
The white flowers look like larkspur
I dont see those flowers on your etsy, where can i find them?
They're on my shopify! I only sell some patterns on my etsy. www.madewithapril.com
I have seen the mass produced flowers and you have to know…they do not compete compared to your flowers. They look generic, nothing special. Yours standout and are just beautiful.
The white flowers could be amaryllis?
omg it does look like this, I might just move the flowers around a bit so it looks more like this *U*
omg ! i’ve seen it countless times on ig and many people in asia sold it on the streets. thats why i was thinking why they can make so so so much stocks for it and it looks very clean 😢 i didnt think they would buy it from temu etc 😮 sad sad sad 😔
So I sell some of my crochet items in my mums souvenir shop. She was around me when she searched up crochet items on Temu. I told her that i am not ordering any crochet items from Temu or shein for her as I am the one that orders stuff inline for her.
Good on you for standing ground on that! It's especially hard when people don't realize how bad it is :S
@@madewithapril It's easier for my mum to understand since she makes beaded jewelry. Since I explained it to her using her handmade items as examples she got what I mean about people buying items in bulk and selling them for cheap. You can't under value your own handmade items.
Thank you for educating us on the fact that some people sell these fakes. It's a battle for small businesses like yours to compete with, for sure, but don't let it discourage you to keep your brand going
The fake part is sellers pretending to be makers when they are resellers. All crochet is handmade. But what materials and labor cost varies greatly depending on the country, as well as the cost of living. Yes, I bet there are plenty of situations where crocheters are earning far less than a living for their work. I am with April, going forward making new designs to showcase her creativity.
Thank you so much for the support! They are mass produced in factories in Asia by people who are working crazy hours for minimal pay. No crochet machines exist so people are working like slaves to 'mass produce' them!
I find these imported crochet makes are creeping in everywhere -recently saw someone on Etsy use them in their “handmade” gift boxes and, technically, they are handmade.
Yeah 🥲etsy has become full of dropshippers and resellers these days
there's a group of Chinese people here in my city who are buying flowers from unemployed makers and disabled people back in china, they buy for like 2 dollars a flower and selling it for 10 almost each. it makes me so mad, and last week, they just mentioned that they're "branching out" to Canada. please watch out!
Looks like trilliums?
I’ve noticed two ladies on YT all of a sudden claiming they are crocheting flowers. I think they are ordering them then posting shirt snippets of them crocheting. You started this trend on YT others are copying your style.
I could not comment on your short... glitch in the system. Please take off 2 days out of every 7 of work in order to rest your wrists and your mind... that way you won't burnout quickly...
Oh my goodness! I hate it when people sell mass-produced products and pass it off as their handmade products!
I almost wish that they would just admit they are reselling so at least we wouldn't be in the same category, but even reselling is so unethical 😭
@@madewithaprilI am confused as to how as a non artist that reselling would be unethical in festivals? Or maybe you are referring to as artists? I am thinking of anime conventions where there are a vendor section and artists alley and vendors can sell whatever has been pre-approved. Maybe I missed some context. Thank you! Also. Would like a video how to detect handmade items better. I want to support artists and once I see the artists sharing their process, I am sold! But without these photos I felt clueless. Thanks so much for posting these videos. I have been thoroughly enjoying them.
