When an industry gets mature and starts getting commoditized, we almost always see a race to the bottom. Whether it was automobiles, TVs, computers, or appliances, Asian brands eventually destroyed Western brands thanks to their comparable reliability and far better economics. Within the computer market, the Asian brands that were winning were Asus, Acer, and Lenovo, but this didn’t last forever. In fact, over the past 10 years, HP and Dell have very much reclaimed their brand dominance within the computer market. One of the main reasons for this is that consumers are now looking for different attributes when purchasing a computer. They’re no longer looking for the cheapest machine on the market but rather, the best machine on the market within a reasonable price range. This video explains how American brands won back the computer market, and why Asian brands were not able to keep up.

It's funny how quickly people forgot the computer hardware revolution and think that the AI revolution is occurring faster than any other technological progress in history. The computer revolution, internet revolution, and mobile communication revolution went blazing fast; not faster or slower than the AI. We have short term memory and always think, this time is different.

We didn't have internet widespread back in the day, so these reports largely went unnoticed in average Joe's eyes. Only if you are an avid newspaper or journal reader, you would have witnessed the rapid strides in hardwares

Weirdly enough intel has a factory in Albuquerque and during the trump admin the admin tried to convince dell to reopen other sectors of the factory but Albuquerque democrats didn’t want it opened but rio Rancho wanted it only during the chips act that finally got passed did they relent and let intel open up other assembly lines
Yeah I'm never touching a Dell again, not even with a 10-foot pole. I've heard too many tales of woe about their abysmal Quality Control issues. From personal experience, I've seen 2 dell laptops randomly die for no reason (My mums and my cousin smh)
I'll stick to HP forever honestly. I once bought a low-end HP and it still served me for 5-years (It was launched in 2014, and I purchased it in 2019)
Sure it slowed down a lot over time, but it never tripped-off on me. It's still alive to this day.

My HP's RAM malfunctioned a few weeks ago and I had to remove one of the sticks. The laptop is literally less than a year old
We've reached "peak smartphone" as well. Smartphones in the last several years have become capable enough for the vast majority of users. Displays are good enough. Cameras are good enough. Batteries are good enough. People are keeping their smartphones longer, say, 4-5 years.
We are not yet at peak smartphone. Once AI becomes embedded within the phone that will probably be a peak. As that AI will be embedded in everything.
@@Art-is-craft AI is largely a software issue, not a hardware issue. It generally relies on an Internet connection. When Apple comes out with AI later this year, it will trickle down to previous iPhone models.

There's a push to use local AI models, both on phones and on PC's, because some companies don't want to push their sensitive data to the cloud.

Trying to shoehorn the world's knowledge into a smartphone, even one with 1TB of storage, is laughably naive. In the cloud, all that knowledge reside on vast server farms.

Interesting fact : Lenovo actually now owns brands that made first proper laptop (IBM Thinkpad) and phone (Motorola) but over a decade ago it wasn't a major brand
Another thing to add is that HP started sharing repair guides for their laptops and selling some replacement parts.

Definitely this. Both companies have totally rebranded their logos to look way more modern, too. It's almost shocking seeing the upward trajectory; just a few years ago an average Dell and an average Asus were damn near the same thing.

This is a really optimistic way of describing what really happened - increasing monopolization of the tech industry leading to reduced competition and innovation. I suppose you could "look at the sunny side" and say, "Yay, I have to buy a computer less often because nothing much changes!" - or you could wonder about all the innovative tech we're missing out on...
"Innovation we're missing out" yeah NO. Innovation is alive and well. It exist but extremely expensive. Laptop new form factor is all screen with a detachable keyboard.
While pc and normal laptop have already reach peak design between function and purpose.

1. There's no monopolization in tech. Literally no tech company is anywhere near atnt 1984 level.
2. Innovation company die all the time. Just look at lg smart phone design. Not enough people bought it, they exit the smartphone industry. People want safe and reliable product and service. It's everyone prefer iphone than andriod that change every single year.
your history is messed up...Lenovo purchased IBM's computer branch (Thinkpad) . So Lenovo didnt crush them, IBM exited the space and Lenovo rose from that. Thats a big difference.

@@manishdk The perception of Asian PCs are cheaper than American is totally wrong. Dell and HP have always sold affordable PCs at rock bottom prices. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for.

Im surprised. But this days, modern HP laptops aren't that great anymore. Mine and several others on reddit had hinge problems after 2-3 years of using. Mine is a mid range laptop, havent tried their flagship laptops though maybe thats another case

In the late 1990's we sent our engineers to asia to teach them how to manufacture computers.
American brands have to manufacture their product in Asia to stay cheap and competitive in much bigger markets

This is so true. I remember when I bought one many years ago (it was a small touchscreen Chromebook). I thought it was great for the first day or so. The screen went out within less than 3 days.

I am surprised that Dell and HP of all companies managed to stay on top, given their terrible reliability in the last few years. They produced excellent machines 10 years ago, like my HP EliteBook, which I used to write this comment, but not anymore. Adding up HP's recent printer scams, the situation gets worse.
Dell Latitude line (office work & finance focused) is highly durable. Same for HP EliteBook's 800s series laptops.
On my fourth Lenovo now, and I am unlikely to change. Ive only had to replace them because the hardware got dated.
If i went HP though it would be some of their business laptops.

Until I bought this HP Omen - I couldn't believe my eyes. WTF - When did HP go from Packard Bell quality to Top Tier Quality. TBH, I bought it because It was a refurbished i9 13900K CPU and a 4090 GPU for $2100. I was just buying it for the 4090. But when I got it, it's 50 Lbs of Mostly High Quality Brand Name components (D@MN even Reviews said it probably one of the versions of the best 4090 out there). Dude, I wasn't looking to buy an HP pc. But Man was I wrong about the this thing. You want to experience a "WTF " moment, go to you local Microcenter Store and look at one of their HP Omen PC. If you ever do, please let me know what you think.

I always liked my HP laptops. from my experience they have a good build and nice keyboards for typing. They have decent lower scale stuff but really stepped it up with the x360 envy line and up.
not saying other brands suck but I was surprised how tanky and decently built HP laptops have been for me. And then everyone loves Apple... unless they're gamers or use Windows software for work.
Their keyboards hold up to the spiciest of pillows. Not sure if that speaks to the durability of the laptop or how cheap the lithium battery in them is...
@@Code7Unltd haven't run into that. I've seen videos of laptop batteries swelling but I don't know if that's just an HP problem. But HP keyboards tend to be so soft and clicky. The only other laptops that stand out to me is the Zephryus from ASUS, LG gram or Samsung Galaxy Book. But those are even more expensive than HP Spectres
@@matthewrichardson2533weird you say that. I have seen more dell laptops with this problem (worked at a place that did recycling. I dont know how common it is. rarely saw HPs with that issue. Age might also be a factor but still.

I'm using a lenovo work station from 2017 (P51)
This thing is a tank, even after 6 years it still gives 7 hours of battery life for moderate tasks, has 4gb of graphics card for basic gaming and perfect for my work (mostly web development)
Lenovo and HP/Dell mix here. Happy with all of them as I chose custom hardware features. (I'm also part of the Apple ecosystem but that is due to work.)
Currently watching this video from my Dell Inspiron from 10 years ago is amazing how the quality of it. Dell is a good brand to buy from.

Is it a Latitude or a Vostro/Inspiron? The Vostro/Inspiron series aren't very good and reliable. I see them all the time in our repair center. The Latitude series fair better, but they aren't perfect either.

I am watching this on an Acer and in my opinion it is fine. If you want the best performance for a given price you can't beat it and overall I love it besides the terrible battery life because it has been like 5 years since I got it.
Always heard negative comments about american computer brands but tried the HP VR Backpack G2 in 2019 cause it was so unique. Was happy with it till Black Friday last year when HP had some fantastic discounts and got a HP Z2 G9 computer cause of how good the VR Backpack system was.
Always used to go for non chinese brands whenever possible. But realised the quality of "Made In China" products rose exponentially over last decade while keeping prices down. My DELL started getting problems within a week of purchase during 2020 Covid times. Struggled to make it run, finally used UBUNTU to even perform badic file management. Exchanged with a Lenovo within the same price bracket and so happy with the built and performance. Learnt the Asian brands give better specs and value for the money we spend than europen/americans. Lenovo/Asus of 1000$ will give the same as a DELL of 1300 or 1500$. HP is a bit better but still lagging behind.

I'm still rocking a HP elite desk g2 800 mini as the main print computer for my printing business, just upgraded the RAM and wifi/bluetooth. Will be upgrading the CPU next. Great little machines the mini elitedesk series.
Mines coming on 9 years old. Definitely got a few more years left in it too. Only running an i3 6100 and 16gb. I can go to an i7 6700 and 32gb for very little.

Overall no issues so far, battery is genuine although it's a replacement installed in late 2022. I had planned to do RAM and storage upgrades but covid and many other priority changes. In a year or two i hope to replace it (with anything, a newer laptop or an assembled desktop pc) and either sell it or keep it, probably as a Linux machine

This is mostly for laptops for gaining desktops the Asian brands dominate even in the GPU market because they sell aftermarket cards from AMD and NVIDIA

I had a lenovo yoga c930. It was great, but it failed after 18 months. So I bought a dell and I have had it almost twice that long now.

I can't agree with this. I don't see HP or Dell standing out. The laptop keyboards of most major brands are still getting worse, the upgradability and repairability of nearly all brands of laptops is going down, with Framework being an exception. Many models of desktops are still shipping with proprietary power supplies that can't support much beyond basic upgrades.
As I see it, people who aren't concerned with upgradability or repairability care more about price than brand, unless it's Apple.
I'm not saying you're wrong; however, I am saying that I'm not seeing the same thing you are.
On 2021 I bought my laptop M2 memory, an extra terabyte for personal data such as movies, videos and what not and so far good, never understood the need to constantly change it, I have another computer that it's almost 8 years old, I thinking of using it as a server but I still can watch my videos, code and work, sure things are damaged for all that time but it's still pretty functional and with Linux is quite faster than having it with Windows
Almost everyone I know doesn't buy any brand of computer except Apple, but most people buy no name brands from their local PC shop or build their own. Notebooks of course are a different option and now they are more popular than desktops, but many I know will keep using a desktop until they can no longer build or buy one.
Same, many people in College are buying Apple MacBook, ASUS Rog/TuF, Razer blade and Lenovo thinkbook or Yoga these days.

People would rather buy a MacBook because Windows Laptops doesn't look good in it's current state, Too many Cost saving and Cheap Build Quality even for a High End Gaming Laptop, their Hinges and Keyboard are the main problem.
Even a Cheap acer Nitro and Predator has better Price/Performance and reliability than alienware and Omen combined.

I remember HP laptops from the early 2010's had really poor cooling & Dell laptops from the early 2010's were pretty hard to repair/upgrade, so I've generally had a negative perception of both brands. I assume a lot has changed since then though. I tend to prefer Lenovo & Acer laptops.
My favorite lineup of laptops is HP ProBook. Watching this video on ProBook 445 G8 which I upgraded to 32GB RAM and 2TB SSD. Too bad they don’t yet offer have current-generation Zen 4 AMD chips like Ryzen 7 8840U or Ryzen 7 7840U. If they did, I would consider replacing it for the better integrated GPU. I tend to avoid laptops with discrete GPUs, due to weight and battery life.
Not surprised ppl don't upgrade anymore... My previous PC upgrade was back in 2017 when the GTX 1080 Ti FE reigned supreme until I finally caved in for the Raytracing Experience and upgraded to an RTX 4090 FE ( paired with an i9-13900KF & 64GB of RAM for non-Gaming related activities ). That combo delivers between 90-120FPS in *_HEAVY_* RTX Titles like CP2077 which I expect to be an outlier when it comes to being a performance drain ( obviously not taking games with terrible performance into consideration - No amount of hardware can save these ) so I'm expecting this system too now lasting for like the next 5+ years since I'm not expecting to ever be buying into the useless 8k resolution fad.
You don’t need a 4090 for Cyberpunk 2077. It runs pretty good in 4k resolution with path tracing on 4070 Ti Super (which costs half the price of 4090), albeit my monitor is 60 Hz.
HP, reliable? Most people make fun of their poor quality hinges that break more often than not. I haven't encountered them myself, but what I have encountered was some nasty problems with an HP desktop I had, and ended up replacing the whole thing later on.
My cheap asus lasted 7 years and still running although not being used anymore, while my new HP Elitebook died in 3 months I had to have it's motherboard replaced lol it's been running again for 2 years no problem but my coworker with the same laptop had hers died the same way I do last month
purchased a asus budget laptop for INR. 33000 in 2016... right now except the battery it's still running fine. also had to add a ssd later on... fun fact i again purchased a asus tuf gaming laptop last year just because of the previous experience of reliability... so i can surely say that asus laptops ar quiet good for long term

had 2 dells, 1 HP, 2 alienwares, 2 razers. They lasted 1-2 yrs at most before problems occurs that i cant fix (screen died, battery inflated, keyboard membrane fell off) my 1 2019 lenovo yoga still going strong. only problem is i cant upgrade RAM and loosening but still usable hinge. Screw american pc brands.
My last computer motherboard lasted me 10 years this current motherboard is at 5 years and will not upgrade until it dies, but i do on occasion upgrade GPU even if the old one has not died as video editing needs more performance always. PS Always keep your pc as clean as possible from dust as it is the biggest pc component killer.

I'd personally never buy an HP laptop since they're prone to break their hinge and DELL desktops are usually so closed off that upgrading anything is basically impossible.

Maybe consumer sentiment changed, but it's does not matter which time you look at, if you replace your device less often, you have more budget to buy a more powerful machine, that will last you longer, because it will keep up with developments longer. The only reason most people ever have to replace their computer every 2 years is cause they're buying cheap 💩

i think dell and hp make lots of money on after sales service, especially to enterprise customers. when was the last time you've seen an office loaded full of acer and asus workstations? only foreign brand that comes close is lenovo. methinks when someone buys a computer at walmart, they are likely to pick a brand they recognize, and they recognize whatever they have at the office which is most likely dell or hp.
Aftersales in every country is different. It always comes down to aftersales service. In our country, HP and Dell aftersales service is very poor. While in Acer and Asus is average. And lenovo just works fine.
My macbook I bought 9 years ago still going strong. I still get about 4 hours of charger and I never even replaced the battery. This is why nearly 80% of college/grad students in the US use apple computers.
I've been buying Dell computers since 1999 and I think they are just great. Nonetheless not one of them was built in the USA so what is the problem with the Asian brands if they are running Microsoft (USA) software, many use Intel processors and other chip sets (USA) and run numerous programs that are American sourced? I don't really understand the badmouthing? If American companies want to focus on the high profit top shelf computers and the far east prefers to focus on mid-range I think it is a win win situation for the consumer.
Also, pretty much all industries that don't need to look "hip" as part of their allure or need image/video editing use either HP or Dell. I literally cannot come up with a single company in the oil and gas industry whose employees don't use one of those brands,
Thing is American brands manufacturer their products in Asia to stay competitive and relevant in cheaper and bigger markets.

You're talking exclusively about non-gaming PCs. For gaming PCs, the Asian brands are still going strong. There is plenty of brand loyalty for brands like MSI. I'm typing this on an MSI gaming laptop and it's by far the best PC I've ever owned.
HP and Dell make good products, just the price and variation in quality are sub-optimal. But I'm all for this comeback
HP's Elitedesk, Prodesk, Elitebook, and Probook lineup has been pretty rock solid for me. I've seen maybe 10 fail over 5 years with a deployment of over 400+. 90% of those its the SSD dies or the battery balloons up and the user doesn't notice until their trackpad no longer works.

Well, quite agreed in terms of pricing. But you kinda pick and choose the models to include in the videos like featuring iMac and Dell XPS, but not the lower tier Dell like Inspiron and whatnot. Of course, Acer cheaper models have had the notoriety for their QC, but so have the other brands. The Asian 'premium' line up has been in the market for a while, and they have been well received. Check the Lenovo Yoga/Slim Pro 7 or 9i or the Asus Zenbook Pro. These are well built and sturdy. Ironically, the premium Dell XPS line up has actually been criticized for being overpriced. (You still get FHD+ screen with an Intel Arc and 512GB storage for $1,699. Let's say you want a 3K screen with 1TB storage and an RTX 4050, that's $2,499).
I have a great experience with Lenovo I did try to switch to HP and Dell. But, my experience was not great. Except few of Dell's High-end laptops most of their models suck seriously they are also pricey for the same specs Lenovo offers at least in my country I am not sure of the US.
Just for the info, even my company provided me a Lenovo laptop. It is a very old model and used one (as at the time of my joining any other laptop was not available) its trackpad sucks but the laptop performance is a charm I had no reason to replace the laptop after getting new laptops.
No offense It is just my opinion and I had an extremely good experience with the brand.
Just for your info recently I found a very old model of Motorola mobile ( maybe Android 4 or 5 ) I decided to give it to my grandpa. I had to boot the OS as it was faulty and resetting did not work as for some reason there was no backup for the device also I did not see it anywhere online. But finally, I found a Lenovo ( Lenovo owns Motorola ) in-house application ( sorry, I don't remember the name ) that literally took me just 5 min to boot and reinstall OS to that mobile now that it is working perfectly fine. This was a very sweet experience because It took time for me to boot RedMi and Vivo even Samsung phones previously. That was a great customer experience from my end even Lenovo Vantage helped me extremely in my laptop maintenance.
Dell Latitude line is very durable. That line is geared towards finance, accounting, insurance underwriting, and data analysts' roles.
We bought a new Acer laptop 6 months ago it's Great I don't know why Acer gets so much hate
All the Dell & HP, I've owned, have crashed in the first two years, sticking to Acer & Lenovo for now
