I swear my Nurmberg had fuel bunkers full of T-stoff when I was sailing her...but whenever I shoot one now It seems like I only do 1000 damage (or worse, leave him on like 50 hp. I swear there's some line of code in the game that says I'm not allowed to do well)
Colorado is actually quite good. Competes well with Nagato. Used to be a trial to get through, though. North Carolina too for that matter. Used to be the worst tier 8 BB but is very good nowadays.
Colorado's flaw is being overmatched by 16" shells from any angle. Even with the imminent introduction of Scharnhorst and Gneisenau that characteristic of T7 BBs isn't changing anytime soon. Nagato arguably has it worst as it's possible to not only penetrate but also citadel her from virtually any angle. Colorado is hard to cit even when close to broadside.
the north carolina and Iowa are worth the colorado struggles. even more so now that they improved the armor hit boxes and the turret angles on the N. Carolina

The "golden" rule is to not stay and camp in it, every smart captain that has torps will fire their torps into a enemy smoke, only use the smoke to retreat

BB hulls at T8+ will be immune to shells from more angles than they are not. If it's too difficult for you to figure out how to aim somewhere else on the ship that isn't so heavily-guarded or angled against your guns, then stay out of high-tier.
+Safresto That's what people said about Mutsuki, but I enjoyed her more than Minekaze. It's not how the ship performs, it's how one uses her. By all regards, Kongo is a godly T5 BB, but I personally can't use her effectively at all.
I'm loving my Mahan but i still debate over which torp set up to use, the longer range is nice but the drop in speed makes me wonder if the additional range is really worth it.
I do have to say myself that I kinda like my Mahan, the turret placement is really nice, but it's too slow and too obvious for it's own good. But hey, at least it can stealth torp...
